A very rare pewter-mounted faience Hausmaler jug painted by Josef Zl‡mal, 1792-93 of lobed ovoid form on a flared foot and with a slightly flared rim and a strap handle, finely painted by Josef Zl‡mal with swags of roses and other flowers hung from rings, between colourful birds, butterflies and scattered leaves, all below a puce rope-twist border interspersed with florets to the neck, the rims with iron-red wavy and straight line borders, the handle striped in iron-red, the footrim with a pewter mount 22.5cm., 8.875;in. The decoration on this very rare jug is undoubtedly by the same hand as the pewter-mounted jug by Josef Zl‡mal, signed 'JZ', formerly in the renowned collection of Rudolf Just, Prague, and sold in these Rooms, 11th December 2001, lot 229. See Ruzena Hrbkov‡, 'Vliv Holicske Manufaktury na lidove dzb‡nkarstvi', in Cesky Lid, no.1, 1960, pp.13-15, ill.3. Josef Zl‡mal trained at Holitsch, from where he was released in 1792. From 1793 he was a painter of 'English tablewares' at the creamware manufactory of Count Mont l'Abatte in Bistritz am Hostein. The present lot was decorated in the period between the two appointments, and, in common with the ceramics from Bistritz and Weisskirchen, was probably mounted in pewter in Olmutz.
