An early carved hardstone Buddhist plaque, carved by a 'Sculptor of Gandhara', 34 x 15cm. Provenance: Purchased by the late vendor from Taxila, the former Greek city of Pakistan. Taxila was in the Gandhara region which has long been a crossroads of cultural influences, with Indian, Greek and Roman art mingling with intensive Buddhist missionary activity to produce a flourishing art culture, particularly in its' interpretations of Buddhist legends.

AN IMPORTANT CHINESE TURQUOISE-GROUND EWER in the Tibetan style (Pemba Hu) with a globular body raised on a circular splayed foot surmounted by an elaborately formed knopped neck set with a broad cylindrical mouth decorated in polychrome enamels and gilt with Eight Buddhist Emblems interspersed with lotus scrolls and enclosed by formalised borders, the scrolling spout with conforming decoration and a moulded dragon's head with fanged teeth at the junction of the body, the beaded borders and details highlighted in gilt, the turquoise-glazed base with a Qianlong seal mark in iron red and of the period, 73/4" high.
