Three: Leading Seaman F. T. Roberts, Royal Navy, later Mercantile Marine 1914-15 Star (J.7087. F. T. Roberts, L.S. R.N.); British War and Victory Medals (J.7087 F. T. Roberts. A.B. R.N.); together with hallmarked silver Boxing prize medal ‘Feather Weight A.B. F. Roberts H.M.S. Seymour Winning Team Flotillas Novices 1918’, good very fine Pair: Private William Brady, South Lancashire Regiment, who died of wounds in June 1917 British War and Victory Medals (21907 Pte. W. Brady. S. Lan. R.) extremely fine (5) £70-£90 --- Frederick Thomas Roberts was born at Portsmouth, Hampshire, on 3 July 1892, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on board H.M.S. Ganges at Harwich. He advanced to Ordinary Seaman in July 1910, to Able Seaman in January 1911 and to Leading Seaman in June 1915. Deprived of a Good Conduct Badge in March 1917, he was disrated to Able Seaman and served subsequently aboard H.M.S. Seymour until October 1919. He was advanced again to Leading Seaman in August 1920 and remained in this rate until discharged ‘C.S. time expired.’ He briefly joined the Merchant Navy, signing on in July 1923 as an Able Seaman and, after a return trip to Quebec, served for 4 months on the Troopship S.S. Marglen as Quartermaster before singing off at Southampton on 8 January 1924. Sold with Board of Trade Continuous Certificate of Discharge and three group photographs aboard H.M.S. Seymour, including boxing team, together with copied research. William ‘Billy’ Brady died of wounds received during preparations for the 3rd Battle of Ypres, on 25 June 1917. He was with the 11th Battalion in the Zillebeke area of the salient when he was badly wounded and carried down to the field hospital at Poperinghe, where he died. He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. Sold with an original photograph of Brady in uniform with his sister Annie taken in 1917 immediately prior to his deployment.

A hallmarked silver medallion for Wandsworth Schools, reverse engraved MIDDLE CHAMPIONSHIP 1938. A bronze boxing medallion, London Schools A.B.A. Secondary Schools, reverse engraved 7 ½ ST. JUN. J.T. SHAPCOTT, FINALIST. With an Air Ministry cardboard medal issue box with name and address details removed. A bronze metal Bosuns call (marked with War Department arrow). A pair of Navy Officer epaulettes. A crude wooden model of a Landing Craft, side painted LCT 1020 (Landing Craft Tank 1020 was launched in November 1943). A Certificate from H.M.S. King Alfred dated 7th January 1944, confirming Peter Shapcott, C/JX 409853, as promoted to Temporary Midshipman R.N.V.R. Close combat booklet for Royal Navy and Royal Marines, BR621, 1942. Various photographs of Naval interest including photos of landing crafts (some copy photos noted). Handwritten letters. Correspondence, dated 25th April 1945, from the Red Cross to Mrs Shapcott relating to her son Serjeant J.T Shapcott, 1272432, RAF who had been reported missing. A photograph of the remains of a crashed aircraft on a beach. A ticket for the Relatives Enclosure at the unveiling of the Runnymede Air Force Memorial. A Victory Celebrations booklet. 18 year old John Tudor Shapcott was killed in action on 26th June 1942 whilst piloting a Wellington 1C bomber (R1410 KX-M) as part of a 1000 bomber raid on Bremen. The plane is believed to have been shot down by a night fighter and crashed into the North Sea off the coast of Holland.

Their styles are similar and difficult to distinguish and not helped by Robert sometimes signing his work 'Cruikshank' in order to pass them off as being by his more celebrated brother.
