A.L.S., with her initials VRI, three pages, 8vo, Balmoral Castle, 13th October 1884, to Lady Ailesbury, on monogrammed black bordered mourning stationery. The Queen announces 'I cannot remain silent at this moment of deep distress when you have lost your dear Sister, my dear old playfellow whom I see before me now as the beautiful Emma Herbert when we were children together', adding that she had received the news yesterday 'without knowing of her being ill even shocked me inexpressibly & having so lately seen you & heard from you that your dear Sister was well I can scarcely believe it possible that she shd. have been taken after so short an illness! I feel terribly sad for her children. But I know how attached you are to one another & what a dreadful blow this will be to you & your sister Lady Dunmore' and concluding by asking for her true sympathy to be expressed to her correspondent's nephews and nieces. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Lady Mary Herbert (1813-1892) Marchioness of Ailesbury, brother of Sidney Herbert (1810-1861) 1st Baron Herbert of Lea, British statesman and a close ally and confidant of Florence Nightingale. Lady Emma Herbert (1819-1884) Viscountess de Vesci of Abbey Leix. She founded the Abbeyleix Baby Linen Society, a co-operative enabling women access to affordable baby clothing. She died on 10th October 1884 at the age of 65.

1994 Bentley Continental R coupe, Registration M484FWR, Chassis SCBZB03C9SCH52262. This very elegant sports Bentley was the ultimate in luxury motoring in the 1990s costing in the region of £180,000 new. This beautiful example was supplied by Chellingworth Bentley dealers in Australia and was subsequently imported to this country in 1998. It was originaly finished in white which has been changed to a more subtle silver upon its return to the UK- the speedometer now showing approx 55,920 miles. The interior is upholstered in dark blue leather with walnut dashboard and door cappings. The mileage is supported with an extensive service history with twenty two bills from Balmoral UK and Harvey Wash Ltd Bentley Specialists covering the last 24 years. Hugh Buchanan (b. 1958) - 'Prince Eugenes Palace, Vienna', signed and dated 89 (1989) also inscribed on various exhibition labels verso, watercolour, 22" x 15"-** Provenance with The Francis Kyle Gallery, 9 Maddox Street, London, W1R 9LE, exhibition no. 11-** The artist specialised in interior and exterior scenes which were very much influenced by the Baroque and Renaissance architecture and design, over the years he has worked on commissions for The National Trust and was invited by The Prince of Wales to paint a series of pictures of the interiors of Balmoral in 1994, he was also  commissioned by The House of Commons to paint four interiors in The Palace of Westminster and his paintings are in the collections of The Queen, Queen Elizabeth the late Queen Mother, The Prince of Wales, The Victoria and Albert Museum, Edinburgh City Art Gallery and various other prestigious universities and collections. The artist was given a major retrospective exhibition by The National Trust at Petworth House. He is renowned for his detailed draughtsmanship and treatment of light and shadows in his interiors and for his sense of depth and space that is reminiscent of the work of Cotman and Prianesi.

Some light contact marks and edge bruises to the first, otherwise very fine. (3)Footnotes:M.M. London Gazette 11.10.1945.Sergeant George Littlejohn belonged to the Balmoral area and joined the Gordon Highlanders at the end of 1929. He served with the 2nd Bn from May 1930 until September 1931 and joined the 1st Bn in India where he served until 1934. He went to Palestine with the Bn and left for Edinburgh in 1935, and served at Redford Barracks until he had completed his engagement at the end of 1936. In 1938 several reservists were invited to rejoin the colours and he took advantage of this and by September 1939 he went to France with the 1st Bn as Intelligence Sergeant and served with distinction in the 1940 campaign. He was taken POW at St.Valery (16562) (Camp 383). Memorial Plaque (2) (Reginald Abbott Bunell [sic] Pitcher; William Lambkin) the first polished, the second with some small verdigris spots, otherwise very fine (2) £70-£90 --- Reginald Abbott Burrell Pitcher was born in Warbleton, Sussex on 17 July 1871, and having emigrated to Canada was living in Balmoral, Manitoba, when he attested for service with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 30 March 1916. He was accepted even though he was in his mid-40s and was given a clean bill of health (apart from missing a toe), serving during the Great War on the Western Front. He survived the War and returned to Canada; however, by 1921 his health had deteriorated and he died at Westminster Hospital, London, Ontario on 12 February 1921, with the immediate cause of death listed as ‘cochexia’, a muscle wasting disease that has been associated with mustard gas poisoning. His ‘Circumstances of Casualty’ form states ‘Death due to service’, and he is buried in London (Mount Pleasant) Cemetery, Ontario. At the age of 49 he was one of the oldest recipients of a Memorial Plaque. Two men with the name William Lambkin appear on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Roll of Honour: A Lance-Corporal in the East Kent Regiment who was killed in action on the Western Front on 9 August 1915; and a Quartermaster Sergeant in the Canadian Ordnance Corps who died at home in Canada on 30 May 1917.
