VICTORIA: (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901. Autograph Order Signed, with her initials VRI, two pages, 8vo, Balmoral Castle, 7th September 1897, on the Queen's black monogrammed mourning stationery. The Queen states, in part, 'I desire thus…..for me, by my order of eggs, sugar & green tea is to be sent occasionally over….to the Munshi Abdul Karim when we are here. This is my order.' With blank integral leaf. VG Hafiz Mohammed Abdul Karim (1863-1909) Indian Muslim Attendant to Queen Victoria. Known as 'The Munshi', he served the Queen during the last fifteen years of her reign, gaining her maternal affection over that time.
ELIZABETH THE QUEEN MOTHER: (1900-2002) Queen Consort of King George VI. A.L.S., Elizabeth, two pages, 8vo, Birkhall, 27th September 1980, to Mary Somerset, Duchess of Beaufort ('Dearest May'), on her monogrammed stationery. The Queen Mother informs her correspondent that a Log Cabin 'is being a real treat' and continues to thank her and Henry 'with all my heart for joining in such a perfect birthday present'. She further comments of the cabin 'It is settled in so happily between the river & the pine trees, and has proved a great addition to life at Balmoral & Birkhall'. VG Mary Somerset (1897-1987) Duchess of Beaufort, daughter of the 1st Marquess of Cambridge. The Princess was a bridesmaid at the wedding of the future King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1923. The Duchess herself also married in 1923, to Henry, Marquess of Worcester, who later became the 10th Duke of Beaufort. The Queen Mother had celebrated her 80th birthday in August 1980.

BEATRICE PRINCESS: (1857-1944) Fifth daughter & youngest child of Queen Victoria. A.L.S., Beatrice, three pages, 8vo, Balmoral, 19th October 1878, to [Theodore] Martin, on the attractive monogrammed stationery of the Princess. Beatrice writes on behalf of her mother, explaining that 'we are all very desirous to have an engraving made after Angeli's picture of our lamented Sir Thomas Biddulph' and continuing to add that the Queen 'thinks that Mr. Hall could perhaps do a vignetted head larger, but not so highly finished as those of the Royal Family. If it could be more in the style of an etching, it would not be so expensive, as the Queen would prefer not going beyond £35 to £40.' The Princess further states 'The heads of Grant & Brown, intended for the Queen's book, were only 25 guineas, therefore if something could be done more slightly & rather larger, surely 10 or 15 guineas more would suffice. Would you kindly let the Queen have an answer about this as soon as possible.' VG Theodore Martin (1816-1909) Scottish Poet & Biographer, best known for his Life of the Prince Consort (1874-80), a work with which he gained the lifelong friendship of Queen Victoria. Sir Thomas Biddulph (1809-1878) British Army officer and Courtier, Master of the Household to Queen Victoria from 1851-66 and later Keeper of the Privy Purse.
ELIZABETH II: (1926- ) Queen of the United Kingdom 1952- . T.L.S., Elizabeth R, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 4to, Balmoral Castle, 24th September 1979, to Lord Christopher Thynne ('Dear Christopher'). The Queen thanks his correspondent for their kind letter of sympathy 'on the tragic death of Dickie Mountbatten, which we greatly appreciated' and further commenting 'He was a splendid person and will be much missed.' Accompanied by the original Registered envelope hand addressed by the Queen and signed by her, with a somewhat rushed initial, in the lower left corner. VG Lord Christopher Thynne (1934- ) Son of the 6th Marquess of Bath. Louis Mountbatten, 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma (1900-1979) British Admiral of the Fleet of World War II. Assassinated by the IRA on 27th August 1979.
* Edward Seago [1910-1974]- Halftide at Waxham:- Edward Seago studio stamp on reverse of back board watercolour 37.5 x 55cm * Provenance. With Thompson`s Gallery, London *Biography. Edward Brian [Ted] Seago was an English artist who painted both in oils and watercolour. Largely self taught, he did receive some instruction from Sir Alfred Munnings and Bertram Priestman. At 14, he won a Royal Drawing Society award and at 18 years old he joined a travelling show and toured with circuses in Britain and Europe. He continued to paint all this while, becoming well known and popular around the World. Invalided out of the army in 1944, but invited by General Alexander to record the Italian Campaign, in 1945 Colnaghi`s exhibited his war paintings and showed his work annually from that time on. This exhibition and subsequent shows received unprecedented success with large queues before the doors opened. The Queen Mother was a great admirer and collector of Seago`s work. The Duke of Edinburgh invited Seago on a World Tour in `Britannia` in 1956, the paintings of Antartica which were considered to be amongst his best, now hang in Balmoral. He became a member of the RWS in 1959. Seago was a lover of East Anglia, the Norfolk broads and sailing, and was a masterly painter and watercolourist of Broadland. He has had major exhibitions with the Fine Art Society, Richard Green, Portland Gallery and Thomas Gibson. He lived at Ludham in Norfolk, where he died of a brain tumor at the age of 64. In his Will, he requested that one third of his paintings from his studio be destroyed!

A Victorian mahogany partner`s` desk, stamped HOLLAND & SONS, rectangular top with tooled leather inset, above an arrangement of seven drawers on each side, one drawer with maker`s stamp, reeded turned tapering legs, brass caps and castors, 80cm high, 186cm wide, 96cm deep Holland and Sons were among the most distinguished furniture producers of the Victorian period. Founded in 1803 by William Holland, they became Holland and Sons in 1843 and were granted the Royal Warrant early in Victoria`s reign. By 1851, the firm employed 351 men, working on commissions for Osborne House, Balmoral, Sandringham and Windsor as well as for London clubs and the British Museum. The firm remained under family control until 1942 when it ceased trading; their archives are preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Complete sets of these concentration and refugee camp reports, which are a mine of information on activities still debated today, are scarce. This set is in well above average condition. Scottish provincial Silver Table Snuff Box by William Robb of Ballater, who was engaged as a Silversmith to the Royal Family at the Balmoral Estate. Inlaid with Scottish agates and a central Cairngorms with an engraved Celtic border. Maker's mark in a triangular punch "ROBB BALLATER", Edinburgh Castle town hallmark and Scottish thistle silver mark along with the date letter "A" for c1906 - c1907, approx 260g. William Robb was commissioned on many occasions by King Edward VII and his mother Queen Victoria to make silver for the Royal family and also utilitarian wares for the dress uniforms of the Balmoral Highlanders.
