*New York. Bachmann (John), [Birds Eye View of New-York & Brooklyn], published A. Guerber & Co., circa 1855, lithograph with contemporary hand colouring, trimmed to neatline with loss of title, 415 x 590 mm A dramatic panorama showing New York and Brooklyn in the middle of the 19th century. The artist shows the city looking north from Governor's Island extending out behind it toward the horizon. The busy harbour and the piers along the west and east bank are filled with an assortment of sail and steam ships. The pre-Ellis Island immigration station is set into the water and connected with a footbridge. By the end of the 19th century, landfill would push the shoreline of the city further out into the sea.
