Das Werk, das nie im Buchhandel erschien - es erschien auf Kosten des Autors, der dafür 90.000 Gulden aufwandte - bewirkte nicht allein den finanziellen Ruin von Rivinus, sondern kostete ihn auch sein Augenlicht. Jede der vorzüglich gestochenen Tafeln bildet in natürlicher Größe eine, selten zwei Species ab. - Augustus Quirinus Rivinus, latinisiert aus August Quirin Bachmann, war ein deutscher Mediziner, Botaniker und Astronom. Sein Vater Andreas Bachmann (latinisiert Andreas Rivinus) war Professor für Philosophie und Medizin sowie Dichter in Leipzig. Nach seinen Studien in Leipzig und Helmstedt wurde er 1676 zum Dr. med. promoviert. Es folgte eine Tätigkeit als praktischer Arzt in Leipzig. Ab 1688 war er Mitglied der medizinischen Fakultät, seit 1691 war er Professor für Physiologie und Botanik, ab 1701 Professor für Pathologie und später Professor für Therapie sowie Direktor des Botanischen Gartens an der Universität Leipzig. 1699 wurde er korrespondierendes Mitglied der Académie royale des sciences, 1703 wurde er als Mitglied ("fellow") in die Royal Society gewählt. - Exlibris.
