Canada/USA, 1972 corrugated cardboard, Masonite 16 h × 17 w × 14¼ d in (41 × 43 × 36 cm) (Apt 16)Early projects in his career, such as his Easy Edges furniture line (1969-1973) comprised of chairs, stools and tables made of stacked corrugated cardboard, and his 1978 remodel of his Santa Monica residence using industrial items such as chain-link fencing, corrugated metal, wire-reinforced glass and plywood exhibit Gehry’s innovative use of materials and originality in form. By the 1980s Gehry was established in the field and in 1989 he was awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize for his experimental and extraordinary approach to design. Gehry rose to fame with important structures and projects such as the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao (1997) and the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles (2003). A fine ‘V.C. Action’ survivor’s pair awarded to Deck Hand J. J. Tresidder, Royal Naval Reserve, late Royal Navy, who served aboard M.L.282 under the Command of Lieutenant P. T. Dean, R.N.V.R., during the Zeebrugge Raid of 22-23 April 1918 With her decks crowded with dead and dying men from the canal blockships, her skipper determined to motor so close to the enemy that the larger calibre shore armament was unable to depress sufficiently to end the affair with a single salvo, but close enough that the launch was riddled with machine-gun bullets British War and Victory Medals (13999D.A. J. J. Tresidder. D.H. R.N.R.) extremely fine (2) £200-£240 --- John James Tresidder was born in the Parish of Wendron, Cornwall, on 13 April 1885. A member of the Tregullow Lodge of Freemasons at St. Day, Tresidder initially worked as an insurance agent in the market and mining towns of Truro, Camborne and Redruth, before joining the Royal Navy at Devonport on 6 October 1916 (Service No. J.60113, sp. ‘Tressider’). Transferred to the Royal Naval Reserve on 25 December 1916, he served a further few months at Devonport before being sent to Portsmouth on 29 March 1917. Posted to M.L.282 from 12 May 1917 to 1 January 1919, Tresidder served aboard the motor launch in operations off the Belgian coast and during the Zeebrugge Raid. To fully appreciate the role of M.L.282 during the latter, it would be apt to quote Admiral Sir Roger Keyes: ‘The rescue work of M.L.256 (Littleton) and M.L.282 (Dean and Wright) was simply magnificent, and but for them, very few of the blockships’ crews would have escaped... Owing to the breakdown of M.L.128, and the sinking of M.L.110, Dean was left with the task of bringing out all the rest of the blockships’ crews, about double the number he anticipated. His skill and heroic determination was simply incredible. Under a deadly machine-gun and heavy fire, he embarked over 100 officers and men in his frail craft. Hearing that an officer had been left behind in the water, he returned into the canal and picked him up. Having no room to turn, he went out full speed astern, towing a cutter from his stem, handling his with his engines, his steering gear having been damaged. When about to pass the Mole and battery, he ran in under the Mole and rounded the extension so close, that the guns could not be depressed to fire on him, and he kept them in line while he went to seaward. Throughout the escape, the M.L. was under constant machine-gun fire; Dean’s second-in-Command (Wright) and three of his four deckhands were shot down beside him, and a great many of his passengers were killed or wounded.’ Remarkably, it appears that Tresidder was the one crew member who escaped unscathed. A short while later, Lieutenant Percy Dean was awarded the Victoria Cross. Returned home to Cornwall, Tresidder returned to his life as an insurance agent in the Wadebridge area. He died in Launceston in July 1970. Note: The D.S.C. group of five awarded to Lieutenant J. C. K. ‘Shiner’ Wright, R.N.V.R., who was decorated as 2i/c aboard M.L.282 during the same raid, was sold in these rooms in December 2007 for a hammer price of £16,000.
A Great War ‘Western Front’ M.C. group of three awarded to Major P. W. Freeman, 5th Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles (Quebec Regiment) Military Cross, G.V.R., unnamed as issued; British War and Victory Medals (Major P. W. Freeman.) good very fine (3) £700-£900 --- M.C. London Gazette 11 January 1919: ‘This officer displayed great skill in leading his company in a successful attack. During the last 400 yards of the advance his left flank was in the air, but by quick initiative he took the necessary steps to defend it. His apt leadership and skilful handling of his company greatly added to the success of the operation.’ Percy Wilson Freeman attested for overseas service at Valcartier on 27 September 1915, having served in the 63rd Halifax Rifles since May 1913. Sold with original commission as Lieutenant in 63rd Halifax Rifles, dated 1 November 1914; an American Red Cross First Aid medal, bronze with bar inscribed ‘Won by P. W. Freeman, Capt.’; and C.E.F. badge for service at the front.

Two original costume designs by Edith Head for Olivia De Havilland in her Oscar-winning role as Jody Norris in the film production To Each His Own (Paramount 1946). A set of two mixed medium costume designs by Edith Head, illustration likely by sketch artist Walter Angelo, who was credited for the film's wardrobe. Both sketches feature a full-length female figure in 20s period costumes, one sketch features the character Jody in a three-piece 20's ensemble, a black jacket with shawl lapel, a black pencil skirt, tan blouse with embroidery detail, tan gloves, a black cloche with a feather accent, necklace and earrings, complete with black mules. There are pencil notations at the bottom of the sketch reading, "Aug-1920, Corinnes Apt 13, #13-Sept. 1924 Seq F26-33-INT. Corinnes Apt." The second illustration features Jody in a sophisticated day ensemble, a cropped bolero jacket with a fold-over collar and surface design (likely embroidery), a draped tulip high-waisted skirt with a center front slit, and embroidered detail at the pockets, a white blouse, white gloves, topped with a hat with a large bow. There are no signatures present on either sketch. Olivia de Havilland starred in this period drama playing Jody Norris, who has a baby out of wedlock with a soldier before he is sent off to fight in the First World War. The plot revolves around Jody's struggle to regain custody of her son in this heart-wrenching period drama. DIMENSIONS:SKETCHES 14.5 X 23 INCHES MOUNT 34.5 X 28 INCHES

After François Girardon (French 1628-1715): The Abduction of Proserpine by Pluto, brown patinated bronze, 102cms high overall, base 36 x 38cms.NB François Girardon was a sculptor widely regarded for his statuary in the gardens of Versailles. Girardon lived and apprenticed in Rome for a period, and although the artist preferred classicism and ancient Roman sculpture, he often worked in the Baroque style.Louis XIV commissioned Girardon to create one of four monumental marble groups intended to decorate the corners of Charles Le Brun's never-completed garden at Versailles, the Parterre d'Eau. Each group of three figures symbolized one of the four elements: earth, air, water, and fire. Pluto's association with Hell made him an apt symbol of fire.Girardon's marble was reproduced as a small bronze from the late seventeenth century onwards. This figural group exemplifies the movement, vibrancy, and energy highly regarded at the time. Girardon's design is perfected by not only the twist of the composition, but also the classical clarity of the figures. The Wallace Collection in London, the Louvre, Windsor Castle and the Getty Museum in Malibu own identical pieces in varying sizes but this example is amongst the largest examples.

Henry Somerset, fifth Earl of Worcester was, by repute, the richest man in England, and Raglan Castle, furnished in the most lavish style, was the centre of a vast estate. He donated huge sums to the royalist cause, for which he was created first Marquess of Worcester in 1642. Charles I sought refuge at Raglan from June to September 1645 after the battle of Naseby, and the castle was the last important garrison to surrender at the end of the civil war – 'first fortified and last surrendered' - on 19 August 1646, when, despite heavy fortifications, part of its Great Tower was destroyed. Charles and May Noel (a wedding present from the above prior to the First World War ) Colonel Archibald Noel (inherited from the above, his mother) Thence by descent to the present owner (son of the above)Guercino’s drawings are widely celebrated for the virtuosity of their line and the sensitivity in which subject melds with graphic touch. Whether in caricatures, sacred groups, or mythological figures, Guercino imbued them with a remarkable freedom of expression, often concentrating on moments of heightened emotion and drama. Simultaneously, through the agility and unobstructed movement of their line, Guercino’s drawings permit his viewers to trace the artist’s mind at work. A diversity of graphic passages can be recognised in the present sheet - from careful parallel hatching to quick outlines and spontaneous squiggles. While the figure of the Virgin can be compared to that of Salome in Guercino’s painting, Salome receiving the Head of St John the Baptist of 1637 (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Rennes) and its associated red-chalk study (Royal Collection 902789, verso), the present sheet bears greater resemblance, in subject, style, and medium, to the pen and ink drawings of the 1620s, and in particular, The Virgin and Child with St Anne, circa 1620-25 (British Museum, inv. no. Pp,4.62).The finished nature of the present sheet further suggests that it was either intended as an end in itself or, perhaps, a preparatory study for an unexecuted print. In any case, the inclusion of an owl on the right-hand side of the composition is a curious addition. Owls, and bird imagery more generally, began appearing in Guercino’s oeuvre in the early 1620s (see the painting, Memento Mori, ca. 1622-23, in a private collection, as well as the drawings, Group of Figures, with Owl on a Pole, Art Institute, Chicago, 1922.493; A Young Man with an Owl on a Stick, ca. 1630, RISD Museum, Rhode Island, 2015.85; and The Bird-Catcher, ca. 1625-1632, Morgan Library, New York, 1979.8). In the seventeenth century, owls attracted a wide variety of interpretations, from enlightenment to salacious pursuit, all of which Guercino seems to have conveyed across several of his works. In this Virgin and Child, the owl’s presence would certainly bend the interpretation towards the clarity of spiritual vision, particularly considering the animal’s placement on the same level as the Virgin’s sightline. The sharp-eyed creature is, furthermore, an apt, if humorous, inclusion for an artist known to have been cross-eyed (il guercino being the Italian diminutive for guercio, the squinter).Adding to the fascination of this sheet is its exceptional, unbroken provenance traceable to the prestigious Bouverie Collection in the eighteenth century. John Bouverie (ca. 1723–1750) was an intrepid British art collector who amassed an array of important drawings by, among others, Michelangelo, Raphael, Rembrandt and an extensive group by Guercino. The latter may even have been acquired directly from Guercino’s descendants (see, Nicholas Turner, “John Bouverie as a Collector of Drawings” in The Burlington Magazine vol. 136, no. 109, p.91).

“THE MINING JOURNAL & COMMERCIAL GAZETTE” conducted by Henry English Esq. Vol 1, No 1, Aug 29th 1835, a continuous run to end 1909, uniform modern cloth binding 1909-1935, then various uniform bindings to Vol 245 number 6279, 1955 (some numbers 1946–1947 original wraps unbound) includes Annual Reviews 1940, 1948-53. A well presented set.The significance of this body of work should not be underappreciated. A man of vision, Henry English, recognised that he was in exactly the right place at the right time and that the world, and indeed the mining community, was entering into a mining evolution. English foresaw that an independently owned and edited journal was necessary for the industry and helped galvanise ideas, information and studies throughout the world. This is reflected in the Journal successfully campaigning for the introduction of the first ‘Safety Regulations’ in 1844, the establishment of the ‘Royal School of Mines’ and ‘The Camborne School of Mines’.It is apt that this impressive collection has currently found its home in Cornwall. The importance of Cornwall to the development of mining is well-recorded through the centuries and came into its own during the Industrial Revolution. This is of course reflected by the Cornish people of the time, who took their hard earned knowledge and skills and spread it the world over to put them into practice. Indeed, reports contained in this vast collective body of work include detailed reports of the Cornish using their expertise in places such as Mexico, Nova Scotia, Brazil, Colombia, Ireland, England, Spain, Chile, &c. &c. in a hugely pivotal era of the world’s development (physically visible by the smaller presses of the War years). This continuous run is altogether large in scale, academic content and cultural significance. Profuse in advertisements, a contemporary encapsulation of global history, as seen through the eyes of the mining industry.Volume 1848 is significant for its contemporary discriptions of the discoveryy of gold in San Franscisco. Please images 35 and 36.No. 679 Vol XVIII, Saturday August 26, 1848 ''Mines are discivered in many places, but quicksilver is to enrich California beyond all other mines'.No. 683 Vol. XVIII, Saturday, September 23, 1848 "The recent American papers contain some evidently exaggerated statements of a reported discovery of gold in California...."
