The makers have kindly confirmed that the guns were ordered on 9th December 1968 by Sir Stafford Sands, with instruction that the guns were to be completed by 1st August 1970. Provenance : Sir Stafford Sands C.B.E. Sir Stafford Lofthouse Sands (23rd September 1913 - 25th January 1972) cuts a controversial figure in the political and financial history of the Bahamas. Born in Nassau just before the Great War and educated in Nassau and New York he began his career in the legal business, qualifying as a lawyer before moving into politics. In 1937 he was first elected to the House of Assembly, representing Nassau City. Between 1945 and 1946 he served as a member of the Executive Council, but it was his appointment as Chairman of the Development Board in 1949 that saw the implementation of policies that would stamp his mark on the economic history of the Bahamas. His main achievement was in the area of tourism. He capitalised on the economic boom being enjoyed in the U.S. offering attractive tax and customs duty concessions and this, combined with the 'Hotels Encouragement Act' witnessed a construction boom that propagated over 40 hotels and residential clubs by the mid sixties (and for the first time in Bahamian history, gambling establishments). Within just one year of his being Chairman, tourist arrivals increased by 47 percent, transforming the Bahamas from a luxurious winter retreat for the social elite of North America to a year round tourist destination for a much wider social group. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1955 and knighted in 1963. In 1964, when the Bahamas moved towards independence, his move to Minister of Tourism and Finance saw two major developments, which were to have a massive impact on the Bahamian economy. The first was his introduction of The Banks Trust and Companies Regulations Act. For a colony with just one commercial bank in 1949, within two years of the act being propagated it became one of the world's leading centres for offshore banking with over 70 banks and trust companies. Secondly, he introduced the Bahamian dollar in 1966 and fixed its value on par with the U.S. dollar - making life very simple for U.S. tourists and investors (the country's largest group of customers). After the 1967 elections, when the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party took over government from the more traditional United Bermuda Party, Sir Stafford Sands sold his comprehensive business interests in the Bahamas and retired to Spain. He died in London in 1972. "The lubricant for the machinery of progress is money" is probably the most well known quote attributed to him during his time in office. It is apt that it was his portrait chosen to be printed on the $10 bill in 2001, as a mark of respect for his achievements for the colony. In 2005 his portrait was replaced with that of Queen Elizabeth II. The present owner has found the guns to be particularly suited to grouse shooting and they have been used to great effect on many of the United Kingdom's most prestigious moors and estates.

Llyfrau Amryw. A large collection of Amryw (the Welsh equivalent of "Varia"), or composite books in the Welsh language, dating from the mid 18th to the mid 19th century,. each volume being a bound up collection of a number of individual titles, the individual contents varying greatly in length, and by subject, some, due to the poor quality of the paper employed, being in less than pristine condition, and some incomplete, in a variety of bindings, mostly as originally bound, in varying condition, a few with repairs or even rebinds, 8vo et infra owen Morris contributed an article on his Amryw to The Book Collector, Vol. 45 No. 2, Summer 1996, a contribution described by the journal's editor Nicolas Barker as "a first rate piece of work, both careful and original". Such a collection obviously reflects the whole range of the book trade operating in the country at the time, in terms of printing, paper, publishers, choice of text, and binding styles and materials. Morris writes "The volumes usually include theology and aids to a decent and godly life: collections of hymns; memoirs, elegies, grammars; secular ballads and other verse". Of the bindings, those of the 18th Century "are soundly, sometimes crudely, bound in rough unlettered calf... Many nineteenth century volumes still make a good showing in well finished, polished full calf or half bound...". Many of the volumes are lettered "AMRYW" (or a derivative) on the spine. We considered it apt to offer the collection complete, as far as possible. An offprint of Owen Morris's article accompanies the lot. (97)

Mackintosh (Alexander) The Driffield Angler; In Two Parts: Containing, Descriptions of the Different Types of Freshwater Fish, and the Best Methods of Taking Them in Rivers, Lakes and Fish-Ponds ... , to Which are Added, Instructions for Shooting ... also, a Short Treatise on Coursing ... , first edition, xii, 346pp., half-title, engraved frontispiece, a little light water-staining to half-title, a little light browning, uncut, handsome modern panelled calf, gilt spine, [Westwood & Satchell pp.137-38], 8vo, Gainsborough, for the author by H. Mozley, n.d., [1806]. *** Although overlooked by many historians (Robb, Hills and Gingrich), Mackintosh is an important sourcebook for those interested in the history of fly pattern development. It seems obvious that he is sometimes talking about dry flies in his chapter on fly tying materials since he endorses materials "not apt to imbibe the water". He also stresses copying the belly of the natural fly when tying since "the fish take most notice ... being more in their sight".
