Huw Griffith Artwork titled No,9 Parquet, signed and framed 100 x 84cm (Apt 1)Huw Griffith trained at Camberwell School of Art. After an apprenticeship as a fine art framer, Griffith began his career working in the picture department of Phillips Auctioneers (writing condition reports). This proved to be a free education in everything from old masters to contemporary art. The artist’s artist, he takes inspiration from found objects – such as old letters, ephemera and frames – picked up on his travels and from trawling antiques fairs. He is intensely instinctive by nature and shows scant regard for creative constraints and any artistic rulebook, preferring the peripheries of the art world and the traditional marketplace – he started off selling his work on the street and has worked his way up from there. The son of the late actor, Kenneth Griffith, his aesthetic has one foot in the historical past, and the other in Outsider Art.Â

2 x Minjung Kim (Korean, b. 1962) framed limited editions on linen paper silver framed 87 x 57cm (Apt 10)Minjung Kim is renowned for her intricate, abstract ink paintings executed on delicate mulberry bark paper that she often burns, layers, or twists to create subtle textures. Works from her “Mountain†series, which featured in the 2015 Venice Biennale, display rows of gently undulating lines that together evoke beautifully lit peaks and valleys. Kim was trained in traditional calligraphy and Korean watercolor painting in her youth, which is evident in her refined linework and masterly control of her brush. While her materials are rooted in East Asian artistic traditions, she is informed by Western abstract expressionism, which she learned while studying in Milan in the 1990s. She eventually split her time between New York and the south of France, where she continues to create her contemplative paper works.

This lithograph is based on the painting of the same name which was executed from 1932-34. Depicting the lips of the photographer Lee Miller, floating in a sky above the Paris observatory, the painting was made in response to the ending of their relationship in 1932, and has become an icon of surrealism.
