A BLACK-LACQUER FIVE-CASE INRO Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century Decorated in gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e, gold and slight coloured togidashi maki-e with an all-over design of a snake, a frog and a snail among overlapping insects of assorted species, including tonbo (dragonfly), shoryo batta (Chinese grasshopper), mukade (centipede), butterflies and hotaru (fireflies), the top case with a spider and web, the interior of matt gold lacquer, unsigned, with a bone ojime carved with a squirrel and grapes and a wood netsuke in the form of an aburazemi (large brown cicada); unsigned. 7.7cm x 5.5cm (3 1/16in x 2 1/8in).
