A GROUP OF FOUR LACQUER KŌGŌ (INCENSE CONTAINERS) Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century Comprising a circular box, slightly concave on the top and bottom with rounded edges decorated with chrysanthemum blossoms in gold and silver togidashi maki-e and hiramaki-e with hirame embellishments, the interior nashiji; A circular tsuishu box carved in bold relief with butterflies, signed Kōbun; A rectangular box decorated with a puppy chewing on a fan in gold, silver, and brown hiramaki-e and kirikane on a ground of black lacquer and hirame, the sides kinji and the interior and base nashiji; A small two-tier hexagonal box decorated with cherry blossoms on Mount Yoshino in gold takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, and okibirame, the interiors and base nashji 3 3/8in (8.6cm) diameter, the largest (4).
