SPEED (JOHN) AND WILLEM BLAEU Pictorial title-pages to Speed's 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain' (1650) and Blaeu's 'Le Théâtre du Monde... Quatriesme partie [Britain]' (P. Rea, 1646), engraved and hand-coloured, Speed title [Chubb XXVI] trimmed within the platemark and sides strengthened with old paper, Blaeu title with margins frayed, folio (2) Footnotes: TITLE-PAGES OF TWO SEMINAL EARLY MODERN ATLASES. Speed's The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine was the earliest English attempt at producing an atlas on a grand scale, with the first detailed maps of the provinces of Ireland and the first set of county maps attempting to show the boundaries of territorial divisions.
