It reflects the influence of the Portuguese in the region and their extensive exploration and mapping of the area. This map is one of six new maps of Africa to be included in Hondius' first edition of Mercator's Atlas. Blaeu's map of Guinea is dedicated to Dr Nicolaes Tulp, the same doctor pictured explaining the musculature of the arm in Rembrandt's famous 1632 painting The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp.
