First edition: 436 pages, brown cloth, titled gilt on the upper cover and spine, which is starting to fray at the top and the bottom, stamp on the title page reads - presentation copy, a good copy.


Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography volume 1 page 351: 'The author remarks that he "will attempt to describe men and things" as he had known and seen them "for the last thirty-five years", and those who lived amongst the scenes he depicts can testify to the general accuracy of the vivid pictures he has drawn of the early days of the Diamond Fields. Many of the character sketches are written in an extremely caustic manner, and many of the African magnates are handled in a somewhat rougher manner than is generally accorded to these favourites of fortune'.


A South African Bibliography volume 1, page 570: 'First published in 1911 - on verso of title page.


Cohen and the publishers were sued by Sir J.B. Robinson for alleged libel and the latter won the case.'
