WORSLEY (FRANK ARTHUR) Under Sail in the Frozen North, FIRST EDITION, AUTHOR'S PRESENTATION COPY TO JAMES 'SCOUT' MARR inscribed 'Jimmy from the Skipper. 4.2.37' on the front free endpaper, half-title, frontispiece and 32 photographic plates (some blue toned, 2 loose), one folding map, publisher's pictorial blue cloth, gilt-stamped with image of ship on upper cover, extremities rubbed, 8vo, Stanley Paul, [1927] Footnotes: FINE PRESENTATION COPY FROM FRANK WORSLEY TO JAMES 'SCOUT' MARR of Worsley's account of the British Arctic Expedition (1925), of which he was the joint leader alongside Grettir Algarsson, and on which Marr acted as biologist and naturalist. Worsley, one of great heroes of Shackleton's Endurance expedition as second-in-command and captain of the James Caird, enlisted Marr for this expedition at the earliest opportunity. 'Marr, the Zoologist, twenty-two years old, could no longer be called an amateur sailor. Heavily-built, dark, five feet ten, with a dour Scots face - like a prize-fighter - he was the strongest man on board and our champion at stowing any sail, square or fore or aft, in the ship. He could also stow bear-steak. We had been shipmates before, in Shackleton's 'Quest,' and pals ever since' (Worsley, Under Sail..., p.24). Marr is mentioned on 28 pages of the text, always positively. Provenance: James 'Scout' Marr (1902-1965, polar explorer), presentation inscription from the author, and additional inscription in his hand 'James Marr from his skipper'.
