CRUISE DIARIES - Two, in one small notebook, ink & pencil on approx. 120 closely-written pages (1930-32). Firstly from Dover - Cape Verde, St. Helena, Cape Town, Dar-es- Salaam, Zanzibar; Secondly from Southampton - Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban & return to Teneriffe & Funchal . . . (ends). * appears to be plenty of absorbing reading, e.g. 'My stable companion expressed annoyance when I turned up , as she had expected to travel single cabin' (Southampton); whilst at Durban - ' We chatted & Mrs. N. showed us some lovely snaps she took in England'; sold with an old unassociated & little used sketchbook.
MEDITERRANEAN - 'Naples to Jerusalem Notes by the way' - incipit of ink ms. on notes of 35 ruled leaves from a (disbound) exercise book; appears to be the text of a lecture. * a small group travelled to Alexandria (via Sicily) Feb, 1877, & thence by rail to Cairo (with several days at both places); on by rail to Ismalia & through the Canal to Port Said & so to Jaffa, with finally an extraordinary month's journey on horseback (with tented camp by night), perhaps not surprisingly - 'this was our first experience of travelling in Palestine, and I can assure you it was a most trying one . . .'; after several absorbing pages describing almost 'biblical' days, the party's eventual arrival at the 'Promised City' might be seen as an anticlimax.
