Berlin Kat. 491. (NDB IX, 274). - Teils etwas braunfleckig. Einige Textbll. gebräunt. Insgesamt sehr schön erhaltenes Exemplar des seltenen Werks. 4 pts. in 1 vol. (=all published) With a total of 68 plates, of which 25 in toned or colour lithography. Cont. half leather with gilt title on spine (slightly rubbed and bumped). - Contains two parts and their supplements. First edition. With text in German, English and French. - A magnificent complete architectural record up to the date of publication of the buildings designed by Hitzig (1811-1881). Each of the buildings depicted was actually constructed, thereby creating an invaluable record of the varied neo-classical structures and their appointments that were almost all completely destroyed during WW II. "A pupil of both the Architecture and the Applied Crafts Academies in Berlin, Friedrich Hitzig (1811-1881) was trained under Karl Friederich Schinkel and in 1835 in Paris, where he was much influenced by the works of Charles Percier and Pierre Leonard Fontaine. Hitzig's efforts to integrate Italian, and later French, Renaissance elements into the neoclassical framework of Schinkel's style were also found in the domestic work of Johannes Strack, Eduard Knoblauch, and other Schinkel pupils; together, they defined Berlin's domestic architectural types.... From the late 1850s Hitzig's designs favor greater plastic elaboration played off against sheer wall surfaces and draw on a broader historical range; he introduced mansard roofs and certain baroque motifs as in the Kronenberg Palace, Warsaw (1866-1870)." (Bary Bergdoll in: Macmillan Encyclopedia of Architects, II, p. 395) - Partly somewhat brownstained. Some text pages browned. Overall a very beautifully preserved copy of this rare work.

JIANG TINGXI (1669–1732)Manuel Impérial des Oiseaux, Niao Pu Cacatoès à Huppe RoseJIANG TINGXI (1669-1732)An Imperial Manual of Birds, Niao PuSalmon-crested CockatooInk and colour on silk, album leaf and calligraphy, framed and under glass, title slip reading 'ya se ding hua xiao bai yingwu, with two seals of the artist reading chen Tingxi and chaochao ran han. Provenance:According to family history, acquired in China in the late 19th century, inherited by the father of present owners and thence by descent in the family來源:據家族記載,此拍品於十九世紀末得自中國,由現藏家之父繼承,後經家族流傳至今This album leaf and the accompanying textual description, as well as the following lot 62, represent two leaves from the Manual of Birds (niaopu), a comprehensive and important encyclopedia of bird species produced for the eighteenth-century Chinese court. The Manual of Birds was a large-size comprehensive compendium comprising pictorial representations of 360 birds, each image accompanied by a title slip designating the bird illustrated and paired with a textual description written in regular script (kaishu), such as exemplified in this lot and the next lot. The album which disappeared at the end of the Qing dynasty, was notable for its ambitious size, meticulously accurate illustrations, and long texts that combine historical references with rigorous mensuration and details gained from close observation. The album was painted by Jiang Tingxi 蔣廷錫 (1669-1732) for the Kangxi emperor in around 1721/1722. The Qianlong Emperor's catalogue of art in the imperial collection, the Precious Records of the Stone Moat (石渠寶笈, Shiqubaoji), first records the Manual of Birds and lists that a total of 360 birds illustrations were paired with descriptive texts by the scholar Wang Tubing 王圖炳 (1668-1743), a poet and artist who specialised in representations of the natural world. Because of the unusually large format of each leaf and comprehensive nature of the work, it was organised into twelve separate albums each comprising thirty birds, each image carefully numbered in black ink on the back of the mount, corresponding with the album and leaf numbers. As demonstrated on this image of a cockatoo, great attention was given to representing the distinctive physiognomy of each bird and the accurate coloration of its coat of feathers. A text cartouche to the right of the painting reveals the name of the bird, in this case a red or salmon-crested cockatoo (Cacatua moluccensis) (yase dinghua xiao bai yingshi 牙色頂花小白鸚鵡), realistically depicted with its textured white coat of feathers and distinctive salmon-coloured crest, prominent black bill and sturdy feet. The cockatoo is perched on a flowering branch, precariously leaning forward while looking directly at and engaging the viewer with a lively black eye, the bill ever so slightly open. During the Tang dynasty, exotic parakeets, lories, and cockatoos arrived at the Chinese court as tributes and gifts, and became popular at court where they were kept in aviaries and gardens. In 1751, a copy of the Niao Pu was commissioned by the Qianlong emperor. Executed by Zhang Weibang 張維邦 (ca. 1725-1775) and Yu Sheng 余省 (1692-1767), it is a direct or close copy or facsimile (摹本, moben) of the original album and today is in the collection of the National Palace Museum, Taipei. The corresponding illustration of the salmon-crested cockatoo can be found in album two, accession number 故畫003600N000000017 (Fig. 1).Very few leaves from the Niao Pu have come to the market. More recently, five leaves depicting various birds including a phoenix, the first leaf of the album bearing seven Imperial seals of the Qianlong emperor, was sold in Sotheby's Hong Kong, 6 April 2023, lot 2575.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Douai printing.- Catholic massacre.- Estius (Gulielmus) Historiæ martyrum Gorcomiensium, maiori numero fratrum minorum; qui pro fide catholica a perduellibus interfecti sunt anno Domini M. D. LXXII, first edition, small woodcut ornament to title, woodcut head- and tail-pieces and decorative initials, lacking final blank, occasional spotting, lightly browned, 19th century half vellum over speckled yellow boards, spine little soiled, rubbed and scuffed, 8vo, Douai, Balthazar Bellère, 1603.⁂ Account of the massacre of 19 Catholics at Gorkum in 1572 by the 'Watergeuzen' or 'Sea beggars' under the command of Willem II van der Marck, Lord of Lumey. 'After enduring much suffering and abuse in the prison at Gorkum (26 June-6 July) the first fifteen martyrs were transferred to Brielle. On their way to Dortrecht they were exhibited for money to the curious and arrived at Brielle 13 July. On the following day Lumey...caused the martyrs to be interrogated and ordered a sort of disputation. In the meantime, the four other martyrs also arrived. It was exacted of each that he abandon his belief in the Blessed Sacrement and in papal supremacy. All remained firm in their faith. Meanwhile there came a letter from William of Orange which enjoined all those in authority to leave priests and religious unmolested. Nevertheless, Lumey caused the martyrs to be hanged in the night of 9 July, in a turf shed amid cruel mutilations. Their beatification took place on 14 Nov., 1675, and their canonization on 29 June, 1865' (Catholic Encyclopedia).
* Titanic Relief Fund. A cheque (No. K. 18642) from The Capital & Counties Bank Ltd, for six guineas to Mrs Ada Mary West, 28 April 1917, with the Titanic Relief Fund ink stamp and three signatures and payee name in ink to verso, with blue pencil marks and Barclays Bank red ink stamp, 10.5 x 20 cm QTY: (1)NOTE:Edwy Arthur West (1875-1912), a Cornishman, married Ada Mary Worth in 1905 and had two daughters. They decided to emigrate to Florida with their two daughters to start a fruit culture business. West purchased ticket number 34651, costing £27.15s and the family embarked on the Titanic at Southampton on 10 April 1912 as second-class passengers.Ada West later recalled the events of the sinking: 'We were all asleep when the collision took place but were only jolted in our berths - my husband and children not even being awakened and it was only the hurrying of passengers outside the cabin that caused alarm. The steward bade us all get up and dress thoroughly with plenty of warm things. Arthur placed lifebelts upon the children and carried them to the boat deck. I followed carrying my handbag. After seeing us safely into the lifeboat Arthur returned to the cabin for a thermos of hot milk, and, finding the lifeboat let down he reached it by means of a rope, gave the flask to me, and with a farewell, returned to the deck of the ship'.Ada also recalled male interlopers in her boat who had hidden under the women's skirts; the men had to be asked to stop lighting cigarettes in fear of the women's skirts being set alight. She also stated that she did not fear for her husband's safety until after the ship had sank and she heard the cries of those in the water. A steward in the boat tried to soften the mood by shouting 'Pull up men -- they're singing in the other boats. Give them a shout!'. The boat's occupants apparently made enough of a din to drown out at least a bit of the carnage happening not far away. As day broke Ada stated that she saw no wreckage or bodies but could see many icebergs. Rescued by Carpathia, Ada and her two daughters were treated kindly. She later recalled another survivor scoff that it was wrong that Titanic's surviving officers were feted by the passengers and crew of their rescue ship, allegedly being treated to champagne in the first class dining saloon on the evening of their rescueAda West died in St Vincent's Nursing Home in Plympton, Devon on 20 April 1953 aged 74. One keepsake that remained in her possession for the remainder of her life was the flask that her husband had passed to her the last time she ever saw him.Her daughter Edwyna, a Titanic survivor in her own right, was married in 1941 to Clarence Patrick Erskine-Lindop (1920-2001) who later became Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Local Government in the Bahamas and he was made an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in 1977. The couple are also believed to have spent time living in Manhattan. Edwyna died in Plymouth in 1969.The paper Mining World wrote 'It is impossible to write without mention of the conduct of this heroic Cornishman who unquestionably might have saved his life had he chosen to take the place that, we suppose, was subsequently occupied by one of the women saved. Of such heroes the world is not worthy. Arthur West may be one of the least known of the Titanic heroes, but none will deny him the distinction of being one of the noblest'.There is a memorial to Arthur West, a former chorister, in Truro Cathedral placed there by his wife and children who had returned to live in Cornwall following the tragedy.
