Nonesuch Press - - Robert (Pseud. Democritus Junior) Burton. The Anatomy of Melancholy, by Democritus Junior (i.e. Robert Burton). 2 Bände. Illustriert von E. McKnight Kauffer. London, The Nonesuch Press, 1925. 4°. 299, -588 S., 2 Bll. OHPgtbde. (leicht berieben). Eins von 750 num. Exemplaren. The first (of 3) works that Kauffer illustrated for the Nonesuch Press. Beautiful, two-column print of this encyclopedia on the various mental afflictions, today probably referred to as depression. The first section describes the symptoms and causes of melancholy, from God to witches, including devils, parents, imprisonment, poverty, 'excessive study', 'desire of revenge' and 'excessive use of hot wine'. The middle section of the book deals with remedies such as diet and exercise, potions, bloodletting and purging. The last part deals with religious melancholy and the melancholy of love. The section "Virgins, Nuns and Widows" illustrates Burton's belief that female melancholy is often linked to sexuality and sexual frustration. - Ownership note on front endpaper.
Photographie - - Chute u. Brooks. Vistas de Montevideo. 22 Photographien. 1880. Vintages, Albuminabzüge. Auf allen Seiten aufkaschiert. 32 x 38,5 cm. In Album mit OLwd. u. goldgepr. Titel. Folio. (Gelenke angebrochen. Starke Abnutzung. - Literatur: Ferrari, R.: Chute and Brooks. 22 photographs. Albumen prints. Mounted on all sides. In album with original canvas and gilt-stamped title. Folio. (Joints cracked. Heavy wear. bumping. adhesive residue). - Early photo album of Montevideo, with scarce urban and ethnographic scenes of the city and the surroundings. The album consists of twenty-two albumen prints, of which eighteen show panoramas, streets and urban environment, the emblematic places of Montevideo, capital of Uruguay. Founded in 1726, by 1875 the city already had a population of 110,000 and had become one of the finest urban and commercial centers of South America. The first part of the album features the settings of this "modern" city such as the Palacio de Gobierno (today: Palacio Estévez), the Mercado Central, the Teatro Solis, the Usina del Gas, Templo Ingles, the Cabildo, the Bolsa de Comercio, the Escuela de Artes, the Asilo de Huerfanos or the Manicomio (today: Hospital Vilardebó). The remaining pictures show the fruit market, rural and ethnographic scenes with peasant families, and a slaughter of a cow. The first individual photos and collections of views of Montevideo were produced by the city's most eminent studios, such as Chute y Brooks, Bate y Cia., and the firm Fotografía Universal y J. Van der Weyde, and it was the Galli y Cia. who published the first album of the city Recuerdo de Montevideo in 1875. Although Vistas de Montevideo does not contain any reference to its publisher or the photographer(s), we surmise that it was issued by Chute y Brooks as some of the featured images appear in other publications with the firm's stamp. The photos were taken in the 1870s and the early 1880s. The Manicomio - today: Hospital Vilardebó - was inaugurated in 1880, and it is partly under construction on the image. The picture of the Plaza Independencia is one of the earliest shots of the 1877 inaugurated town square. Some of the photographs were reproduced as engravings in Bordoni's Montevideo e la Repubblica dell' Uruguay (Milan, 1885) with no credits. Otherwise, the images are scarce both as reproductions or on market, and the album is lacking from major collections. In fact, we could trace only one copy, with only 16 images (all included in the present album), in the holding of the National Library of Uruguay (Biblioteca Nacional de Uruguay). Charles Wallace Chute (1846-1923) and Thomas Brooks were among the most important pioneer photographers in South America. Both Americans, Chute arrived in Montevideo from Boston in 1865 and started the company with Brooks in 1868. Later they operated studios in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Havana, and New York. They became famous for the quality of their portraits, and the views they published of several cities, such as Montevideo, Rosario, and Buenos Aires. They received medals for the quality of their works in Chile in 1875, and in France at the Paris Universal Exposition in 1878 (Ferrari, 2008). - Literature: Ferrari, R.: Chute and Brooks. In: Hannavy, J., ed.: Encyclopedia of Nineteenth-Century Photography. - Each photograph was mounted on one side with a decorative border and title. - One card damaged at the corner, with no effect on the photo. The first and last leaves are spotted, stained, with slight effect to the edges of the first and the last two photographs. The photos are sharp with rich tonal ranges, generally in fine condition. Overall the album is in very good condition.
Astronomie - - Pierre Gassendi u. - "The principal elements of Gassendi's astronomy include a global embrace of empirical method, advanced instrumentation, and measurement, an interest in unusual celestial phenomena, and a partially masked defense of Copernicanism... A primary goal of these recorded observations was to confirm and extend the Rudolphine Tables, the project set up by Tycho Brahe and completed by Kepler, to facilitate calculation of the planet's positions... Another facet of Gassendi's empiricist astronomy was his denunciation of astrology as crafted independent of any ideas from the senses, impervious to correction by experiment or observation, and thus as failing to qualify as natural or experiential knowledge." (Saul Fisher in Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2005). Insgesamt sehr gutes Exemplar. Astronomy - With 43 partly fulls. Woodcuts. Mottled cloth with gilt lettering, somewhat rubbed and bumped. - Very rare first printing of the first edition with four astronomical treatises, the second printing appeared with the addition "seconde partie". Edited and translated from Latin by Francois Bernier (1620-1688), Gassendi's pupil and secretary. Bernier reproduced Gassendi's ideas objectively and faithfully in his Abregé, without editorial interjections or innovations. However, he was dissatisfied with some of Gassendi's ideas: in 1682 he published, again through Michallet, his "Doutes de Mr Bernier sur quelques-uns des principaux Chapitres de son Abregé de la Philosophie de Gassendi". - Engraved bookplate with erased name on front endpaper. Minimally browned and with occasional small brown spots. Overall a very good copy.

Jahrhunderts von vielen Prominenten konsultiert wurde. "English and French physicians in the eighteenth century were much concerned with depression … Lorry recognized two types of melancholy, one a consequence of an alteration of the solid parts ('mélancolie nerveuse'), the other originating in the humors ('mélancolie humorale'). The latter could result in hysteria in women and, in men, hypochondria. Lorry stressed spasmodic episodes: torticollis, pyloric spasm with vomiting, pharyngeal spasm with difficulties in swallowing ("Lorry, Anne Charles" Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography. Torres, Luis de. Disputationum in secundam secundæ D. Thomæ, de fide, spe, charitate et prudentia, tomus unus. Band 1 (von 2). 32 Bl., 1296 Sp., 25 Bl. Mit gestochenem Titel von Jacques de Fornazeris. 35 x 22 cm. Pergament d. Z. (berieben und leicht fleckig) mit hs. Rückentitel. Lyon, Cardon, 1617. Einzige Ausgabe. "Although prolific in his publications, Torres was not a theologian of conspicuous merit. His principal work was Disputationes in 2am2ae D. Thomae: De fide, spe, charitate et prudentia ... He is remembered chiefly for the embarrassment in which he found himself when he had one of his students, D. de Oñate, defend the thesis that it was not of Catholic faith that a particular person, for example, Clement VIII (the then-reigning pontiff), was the legitimate pope. This happened in 1601, at the height of the stormy debates centering around the congregatio de auxiliis, the sessions of which were soon to begin. It was falsely charged that the thesis cast doubts upon the legitimacy of Clement's title to the papacy. Torres and the unfortunate Oñate were jailed by the Inquisition, but were released in 1603 with a stern reprimand" (New Catholic Encyclopedia). ⊕ Bernard Myers (lots 139-158) Work and travel in the Middle East and India introduced me to a world of colour. Under the influence of Islamic tiles and textiles, and Indian and Tibetan painting I set out to teach myself colour. My work at this time was mainly abstract and loosely based on astronomical and optical diagrams. Gradually I turned to realism via still life, working very precisely... (Bernard Myers) Introduction Trained as a gunner in the RAF during the Second World War, Bernard Myers studied at St Martin’s School of Art, Camberwell and the Royal College of Art. Fellow students included John Bratby and Jack Smith, Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff. After graduating ARCA in 1954, Myers taught, variously at Camberwell, Hammersmith and Ealing art schools, and was senior lecturer in drawing at the Architectural Association School. He returned to the RCA to teach for the following two decades, punctuated in 1968 and 1971 by stints as Visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of technology, New Delhi. His final teaching post was as Chair of Design Technology at Brunel University (1979-85). Students at the RCA treasured Myers’ good advice. James Dyson remembered him as ‘cheerful, irrepressible [and] rather dapper… with a tweed suit and bowtie…’ But as well as being upbeat Myers was also appreciated for his considerable range of mind and intellect. On being made a Fellow, in his welcome speech the Dean noted that Myers ‘…must without doubt be the most versatile graduate ever to emerge from the Painting School. Since joining the College in 1961 he has been, by virtue of an encyclopaedic knowledge which comfortably bestrides the boundaries between the humane and the technological, and of his superlative gifts as a teacher, in demand by virtually every School and Department within the College…’ The plus side for Myers was that teaching left him free to practise his own art exactly as he wished. As he noted: ‘Some artists find that teaching interferes with their work. I find it clarifies my work.’ Indeed, he had an unstoppable compulsion to paint, incessantly exploring a wide range of subject matter, in particular the landscapes he encountered on his varied travels (lots 209-213), the still-lifes he worked on in his studio (lots 194,197,,200 & 203), the nudes he painted in weekly life-classes (195, 198, 201, 204), and his not infrequent forays into abstraction, precipitated in part by his fascination with space (lots 196, 199, 202, 205). He married Pamela Fildes, grand-daughter of the painter Sir Luke Fildes in the early 1950s; they lived first in Windsor and then in Kensington before moving in 1974 into one of the studios overlooking the Thames at St Peter’s Wharf, purpose built by Julian Trevelyan, next to Hammersmith Terrace (lots 206-208). He had several one-man shows in the West End, the first at the New Art Centre in 1969; his last with Austin Desmond Fine Art in 1991. He wrote two books on Goya, others on the history of sculpture and How to Look at Art, and co-edited The Macmillan Encyclopedia of Art (1979). He also penned articles for The Artist (May 1988) on his highly original approach to pastel (lots 139-142 & 147-150), and Artists and Illustrators (1995) on his Venice views (lot 209).STILL LIFE WITH FLOWERS AND PEARS ON A PLATTER signed B Myers lower right; inscribed New Grafton 7 upper left margin oil pastel on paper 52.5 x 72cm; 20 3/4 x 28 1/4in (image) unframed In good original condition.

Royal Copenhagen, Denmark. Porcelain Flora Danica botanical pattern reticulated serving platter plate, shape number "20 3518". Marked along the underside with Royal Copenhagen's trademark blue wave stamp and green printed marks. Inscribed with the Latin name of the plant depicted, "Galeopsis versicolor Curt," commonly called "hempnettle".Lot Essay:The story of Flora Danica porcelain begins in an unexpected place--with the publication of the first complete botanical encyclopedia of Danish plants. In 1752, G.C. Oeder (1728-1791), a medical doctor and scientist, was appointed head of the newly created Royal Botanical Institution in Copenhagen. One of his first actions was to propose an ambitious project: a thorough catalog of the flora in Denmark and surrounding areas, profusely illustrated and with characteristic and taxonomic details to help the plants be financially useful to the nation. Oeder and a team of botanists spent years observing and illustrating plants in the field, and in 1861 the first volume of the Flora Danica was published. Twelve other editors presided over the project until the final volume’s publication in 1883. Flora Danica was a masterwork, notable for its contribution to the science of botany, but also for its stunning illustrations.Denmark had been a Russian ally in the Russo-Swedish War of 1788-1790. However, the Danish succumbed to pressure from Great Britain and Prussia and declared neutrality early in the conflict, failing to perform their duty as allies. Following this, King Christian VII of Denmark (1749-1808) needed a way to make amends with Empress Catherine the Great of Russia (1729-1796). He decided to give her a fabulous gift. Since Catherine was known for collecting porcelain, he decided upon a luxurious dinner service the likes of which the world had never seen. And what better subject for the decoration of this porcelain service than the illustrations from the Flora Danica, a scientific triumph and celebration of Denmark’s natural richness? In 1790, the king commissioned the Royal Danish Porcelain Manufactory (now known as Royal Copenhagen) to create a 100-setting dinner service decorated after the illustrations in the Flora Danica. Johann Christoph Bayer (1738-1812), an artist who had worked on the illustrations for the books, was hired to paint the porcelain pieces. He single-handedly painted an incredible 1,802 pieces of porcelain before production was completed in 1802. However, by the time the service was ready, Catherine the Great had died. The service stayed in Denmark, where it became a national treasure, used by the royal family on important state occasions and displayed in Denmark’s palaces and museums. In 1863, Royal Copenhagen decided to revive the pattern. In keeping with the original Flora Danica service, each piece of porcelain was painstakingly hand-molded and decorated. The pattern has continued to be made to order in this way ever since. Each piece has been hand carved, the delicate floral forms molded, glazed, painted, and gilded by a team of Danish artisans. The buyer can choose which plants they would like on their service, making each set uniquely personal. Each piece has the Latin name of the plant depicted inscribed along the underside. Each piece, through its craftsmanship and individuality, tells a story of groundbreaking scholarship, royal politics and diplomacy, and the patron of each commissioned set.Height: 1 1/2 in x width: 16 in x depth: 13 in.Condition: There are no major cracks, losses, or restorations to the platter. There are some areas of wear to the pigment along the leaves in the center. Light wear along the underside.

Each piece, through its craftsmanship and individuality, tells a story of groundbreaking scholarship, royal politics and diplomacy, and the patron of each commissioned set. Each, diameter: 10 in.Condition: Overall there no major cracks or restorations. There are minute chips throughout, in particular: a minute chip along the edge of the anemone plate, a chip along edge of the putsatilla plate, there are 2 chips along the edge of the geranium plate, a minute chip along the edge of the ajuga plate, minute loss to the gilt along the edge of the viola plate. There is light wear along the base as expected from age and use, throughout all plates. No visible signs of restoration under UV light.
