William Holt Yates TITCOMB (1859-1930) The Red Maids of Bristol Oil on canvas, signed, 76 x 123cm, 86 x 133cm framedExhibited 1911, Royal AcademyDuring his time based in Bristol (1909-1930), Titcomb was attracted by the quaint costumes of the children in local philanthropic institutions and in addition to 'The Blue Maids' of Hooke's Orphanage (see Lays last Cornish art sale) he also painted the girls of The Red Maids' School during their annual service at the Lord Mayor's Chapel, Bristol. This work was exhibited along with 'The Little Blue Maids of Bristol' (Red Lodge, Bristol) at the Royal Academy in 1911 and was illustrated in Arthur Mee's Children's Encyclopedia in 1912. The School, founded in 1634 by John Whitson, was originally for “women children” of “deceased or decayed” Freemen and Burgesses of the city. The girls wore the distinctive red uniform until its recent merger with Redland School. This ready-to-hang work is well-presented and in professionally restored condition. The work has been re-stretched, lined and wrapped to crop the viewable image (see images of verso), there is competent inpainting visible under UV throughout.

Possibly depicting leaves or foliage.Jacques Sicard was renowned for his experimentation with metallic luster glazes at Weller - a technique he gleaned while studying under the famed French ceramist Pierre Clement Massier. His exquisite luster ceramics became a line known as "Sicardo," which garnered great acclaim from craftsmen and consumers alike. Sicard refused to divulge his complex artistic process to any individual other than his assistant Henri Gellie, perhaps contributing to the intrigue. However, despite commercial success, producing such a line came with great costs. New Year was a time for wishing good fortune. It was celebrated at the time of the second new moon after the Winter Solstice, blending Imperial ceremonial grandeur and vibrant popular customs. The Lantern Festival signalled the end of the New Year's festivities. It was a three-day event held at the time of the full moon, fifteen days after the start of the New Year. This celebration likely originated during the Han dynasty and is believed to be linked to the spread of Buddhism in China. Emperor Ming of the Eastern Han dynasty (25-220 AD) learned that Buddhist monks honoured relics by lighting lanterns on the 15th day of the first lunar month. Embracing the practice, he commanded that lanterns be illuminated throughout the Imperial palace and all temples on the same day. The tradition of hanging colourful lanterns, often adorned with riddles, soon spread widely among the Chinese populace; see G.J.Melton, Religious Celebrations: An Encyclopedia of Holidays, Festivals, Solemn Observances, and Spiritual Commemorations, Goleta, CA, 2011, pp.514–515. At the time of the Wanli Emperor, known for his consumption and demand of luxurious silks, garments worn during the New Year festivities appear to have been restricted for wear by the highest-ranking members of the Court. These were often decorated with gourds, traditional symbols of abundance, which were often embellished with characters of a congratulatory nature and other emblems underscoring auspicious symbolism, such as displayed by the present example; see J.Vollmer and J.Simcox, Emblems of Empire, Edmonton, AB, 2009, p.50.
