The canvas is backed with a wooden board, an additional backing board covers the frame and has a penciled notation Painted by Wm. M. Prior July 7th, 1855 in New Bedford. Full-length portrait on cardboard of a woman seated at a mahogany table with red drapery and yellow sash in the background. She wears an elaborate lace and red ribbon bonnet, gold jewelry and a blue dress with leg-o'-mutton sleeves. In her hand is a red rose. A penciled note partially reads Watts 4 Centre St. Crease, minor edge damage and some surface wear. Glued along the top edge. 9 3/8h. 7 1/2w. Curly maple veneer frame with corner blocks. 11 3/4h. 9 5/8w.

Randomly placed, highly detailed motifs include checkered crowns, eight-point stars, flowers in handled urns, rampant lions, birds, chickens and a couple in late 18th Century dress standing beside a tea table. They are flanked by ladderback chairs and small begging cats/dogs. For similar samplers see Betty Ring's Girlhood Embroidery, Vol. 2. Great colors on clean background.
