A good Ersari Turkmen main carpet, south Turkmenistan mid 19th century, 9ft.5in. x 7ft.2in. 2.87m. x 2.18m. Two small narrow strips of reweave in centre, one small area of wear in centre of lowest central gol. This beautiful old Ersari has the somewhat crude look of one particular group of early to mid 19th century Ersari main carpets; it has a thick silky pile and a deep, rich, palette of ten colours - dark blue, mid blue, dark green, mid green, brownish red, maroon, salmon, gold yellow, dark brown, ivory. It also has the interesting perspectival drawing of the gols, which are large and square at the top end and become increasingly flattened towards the lower end of the field; thus to an observer standing well back from the lower end and looking up the field, all the gols look to be of the same dimension.
