Betty Joel (1894-1985) a Token mahogany wardrobe:, the glass inset top over two short over six long cedar lined drawers flaked by a sandalwood lined cupboard to one side, raised on square fluted feet, handwritten paper label to rear 'Token handmade furniture Designed by Betty Joel. Made by W R Hamilton & J F Leggett. At Token works Portsmouth 1929', 156cm x 121cm.*Biography - Betty Joel ( 1894-1985) was born in Hong Kong where her father was a minister. After returning to England with her husband after the First World War she began to design furniture for their own home eventually setting up Betty Joel Ltd in the early 1920s. Initially produced at a small factory at Hayling Island, local craftsman from the area who had previously worked as yacht fitters were used to create the designs influenced by French Art Deco furniture and the rich variations and combination of woods. Many of the social and corporate elite of the period commissioned Betty Joel to design furniture for their homes and offices, in 1929 the factory was relocated to larger premises in Portsmouth. * Provenance Formerly the property of Dorothy and Leonard Elmhirst, Dartington Hall from their London residence.
A Georgian mahogany and inlaid gentleman's wardrobe:, bordered with boxwood lines, the upper part with a moulded dentil cornice and blind fret carved ogee frieze with oval fan medallions, the interior with hanging rail, enclosed by a pair of doors with central oval panels depicting urns of wheat ears, flanked by fluted canted angles, the lower part with two dummy short and two long drawers, on bracket feet, 110.5cm (3ft 7 1/2in) wide, 190cm (6ft 2 3/4in) high.
A Victorian burr walnut wardrobe with moulded cornice, enclosed by a pair of shaped panelled doors and with turned and fluted columns to sides, on plinth base, 52ins wide x 25ins deep x 82ins high, and two matching bow front bedside cabinets, each fitted one frieze drawer and cupboard under enclosed by single door, 19.5ins wide x 22.5ins deep x 30.5ins high
