Gay Frères. A pair of 18ct gold clip earrings, of circular textured form, with black enamel leopard spot decoration, maker's mark, London import hallmarks, 1971, sponsor's mark S&S, diameter 2.2cm (VAT charged on hammer price)The firm of Gay Frères was founded in 1835 by Jean-Pierre Gay and Gaspard Tissot, as a specialist chain maker, producing chains for pocket watches and other types of jewellery. As the wristwatch became established in the 20th century, Gay Frères successfully transitioned to focussing on the production of wristwatch bracelets, and from the 1940s onwards supplied bracelets to many of Switzerland’s most highly regarded watch brands, including Rolex, Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, Zenith and Heuer. In fact, Gay Frères are responsible for a number of iconic watch bracelets, having designed, in collaboration with the respective watch houses, Rolex’s Oyster bracelet, Audemar Piguet’s Royal Oak bracelet, and Patek Philippe’s Nautilus bracelet.Alongside its watch bracelets, the company has always produced jewellery, and has supplied to houses such as Van Cleef & Arpels, FRED, and Hermès, as well as selling under it's own name. Gay Frères designs of the 60s and 70s are particularly collectible, and appear on the market fairly infrequently. In 1998 Gay Frères was purchased by Rolex, and continues to produce watch bracelets and jewellery. Condition Report: Gross weight 17.12g.Good overall condition, minor surface marks.

An 18ct gold bracelet by Gay Frères, circa 1971, designed as a series of stepped oval plaques each with a textured finish, accompanied by one additional link, maker’s mark, French assay marks, London import mark, length 17cm. £1,800-£2,200 --- The workshop of Gay Frères was created in 1835 by Jean-Pierre Gay and Gaspard Tissot in Geneva. They specialised in making chains for pocket watches and jewellery and by the beginning of the 20th century were supplying watch bracelets for the biggest Swiss watch companies. Rolex was an early client and Gay Frères produced stainless steel, gold and platinum bracelets for them. By the 1940s, they were supplying Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin, and soon also working for other watch makers including Audermars Piquet and Jaeger LeCoultre. By the 1970s, the company, still family owned, were running the largest factory in Geneva, employing over 500 specialist craftsmen. Gay Frères went on to create jewellery for the prestigious Parisian Maisons such as Hermès and Van Cleef & Arpels. They continue to be regarded as world specialists in handmade chains and watch bracelets, and still produce a new jewellery collection each year - including chain necklaces, bracelets, torques, cuffs and rings in a variety of gold finishes and textures. Their jewellery of the 1960s and 70s is particularly sought after. Condition Report Light surface wear. Overall very good condition. Gross weight including spare link 67.4gm.
