Greek, Boeotian Second half of the 5th cent. B.C.. Clay. H. 7.5 cm; Diam. (excluding handles): 13.6 cm. Cup on a low foot. Band of reserve featuring two figures between large palmettes, all rendered in silhouette. On one side, a draped female seated on a stool holds a wreath and is approached by a crouching satyr. On the reverse, the satyr approaches standing and with an animal skin draped over one arm. A vessel between each pair, with erupting vines sprouting upwards and into a canopy. Highly micaceous clay fired to a metallic sheen at the areas of black, particularly the rim. Condition: Reassembled from two large fragments with smaller fragments reattached at rim. Formerly priv. coll. E.W., Riehen. Thence by descent in the family.
