* BENNO SCHOTZ RSA (ESTONIAN 1891 - 1984), THE PRINCE OF GOALKEEPERS (JOHN THOMSON OF CELTIC F.C.), CIRCA 1968 bronzed resin 101cm wide Note 1: A bronze of this sculpture is in the collection of Celtic F.C. Note 2: Benno Schotz was born to Jewish parents, Jacob Schotz, a watchmaker, and Cherna Tischa Abramovitch, in Arensburg, Russia (now Kuressaare, Estonia) in 1891. He was educated at the Boys Grammar School of Pärnu, Estonia. Later he studied at the Grossherzogliche Technische Hochschule in Darmstadt, Germany. In 1912, he immigrated to Glasgow, where he gained an engineering diploma from the Royal Technical College and from 1914–23 worked in the drawing office of John Brown and Company, Clydebank shipbuilders while attending evening classes in sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art. Schotz became a full-time sculptor in 1923 and subsequently a member of the Royal Scottish Academy, Head of Sculpture at the Glasgow School of Art (a post he held from 1938 until his retirement in 1961), and later, in 1963, Her Majesty's Sculptor in Ordinary for Scotland. His pupils included Hannah Frank, Paul Zunterstein and Inge King (née Neufeld). His homes at West Campbell Street and later Kirklee Road were a focus for meetings of artists, writers, actors, and politicians. His first solo Glasgow exhibition was at Reid's Gallery in 1926 and his first in London at Alex Reid and Lefevre Ltd (Lefevre Gallery) in 1930. He was also a member of Glasgow Art Club, alongside recently arrived refugee artists Jankel Adler and Josef Herman, for whom he organised local Jewish community support. In 1942 he organised the important 'Jewish Art Exhibition' at the Glasgow Institute as an act of Jewish cultural identity during the Second World War. In 1981 Schotz was made a Freeman of the City of Glasgow and in the same year, Gordon Wright published his autobiography, Bronze in My Blood. During his career, Schotz produced several hundred portraits and compositions including figure compositions, religious sculptures, semi-abstracts and modelled portraits, the majority located in Glasgow and the surrounding area. A major retrospective exhibition of his works was held at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh in 1971. He was Life-President of the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts as well as Honorary Member of both the Royal British Society of Sculptors and the Royal Institute of Architects in Scotland. His last sculpture was executed less than six weeks before his death, aged 93. He was a committed Zionist and was buried in Jerusalem. His work is represented in numerous UK collections including The National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh City Art Centre, The Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Aberdeen Galleries, The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, BBC Scotland, The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow Museums & Galleries, The Peoples Palace (Glasgow), The Scottish Jewish Archives Centre, Ben Uri Gallery & Museum (London) and the House of Commons (London). His work is also held in various public collections in Israel. Christie's held a major Studio Sale of Benno Schotz's work in Glasgow in 1997. Note 3: John Thomson, The Prince of Goalkeepers, is one of the most important figures in the history of Celtic Football Club. Having signed for the team in 1926 at the age of 17, his natural athleticism and brave spirit ensured he would become a mainstay between the sticks. He helped the team to two Scottish Cups and three Glasgow Cups. He would also represent the national side and national select XI four times apiece. Thomson's name will forever be associated with the tragedy that befell him during an Old Firm clash on the 5th September 1931. The match was played at Ibrox in front of 80,000 fans. Early in the 2nd half, Thomson collided with Rangers player Sam English, whilst both going for the ball. Most people assumed the goalkeeper badly injured as he was stretchered off, Chic Geatons taking his place in goal. Upon being transported to the Victoria Infirmary, Thomson would soon be pronounced dead. The death of a young goalkeeper in his prime shocked the footballing world. Beyond that, the tragic loss of a young man's life, only 22 years of age and recently engaged, still stands as amongst the most profound moments in sporting history. 40,000 people attended the funeral in his home town of Cardenden, including thousands who travelled from Glasgow, many walking the 55 miles to the Fife village.

Born on March 16, 1853, in Westminster, London, Boyle excelled at rugby and cricket during his time at Clifton College and later at University College, Oxford. In the sporting arena, Boyle made a historic impact in rugby union by becoming the first Oxford University player to be selected for the England national team. He earned his cap in 1873 in a match against Scotland. In cricket, he played for Oxford University, where he was known for his fast round-arm bowling. During his brief first-class cricket career, he took an impressive 30 wickets at an average of 10.30. Notably, in a match against the Marylebone Cricket Club, he took 7 wickets for 40 runs in the first innings and followed it with a remarkable performance of 7 for 33 in another match, showcasing his considerable skill.Boyle's military career was equally distinguished. He served as a captain in the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars and was later appointed a lieutenant in the Imperial Yeomanry for service in the Second Boer War. His dedication to duty was profound; he took 30 of his own horses to South Africa, where he fought in the war. Tragically, he became the first member of the Imperial Yeomanry to be killed in action during the Battle of Boshof on April 5, 1900. This battle marked a significant moment in the war, and Boyle's death was notably the first among the Yeomanry officers in this conflict.

‘If television had come before the movies I might think otherwise, but the cinema today is so cheap and so perfect and so universal in its appeal that I doubt if television can stand up to it for a long time to come.’ So observed Vice-Admiral Sir Charles Carpendale in his capacity as Controller of the B.B.C. in November 1934. Knight Bachelor London Gazette 22 June 1932. C.B. London Gazette 3 June 1918: ‘For war services.’ Charles Douglas Carpendale was born on 18 October 1874, the son of the Reverend William Henry Carpendale and entered the Royal Navy as a Cadet in Britannia in July 1888. A diligent student, he gained 12 months sea time and was immediately appointed a Midshipman in July 1889, in addition to being awarded the Ryder Memorial Prize. Having then served on the Mediterranean station in H.M.S. Collingwood, he was confirmed in the rank of Sub. Lieutenant in October 1893. Appointed to the cruiser St. George - flagship of Rear-Admiral Sir Harry Rawson, C.-in-C. at the Cape of Good Hope, in March 1895, he was advanced to Lieutenant and witnessed active service in the Naval Brigade in anti-slavery operations in 1895-96. The Arab Chief Mbarak, with his stronghold at Mwele, had been slave raiding contrary to new legislation introduced by the British Government and he refused to see a delegation sent to meet him. Reprisals were inevitable, and a Naval Brigade under Rawson marched inland and captured Mwele with a loss of three killed and 11 wounded; just nine no-clasp East and West Africa Medals with the ‘Mwele 1895-96’ edge inscription were awarded to officers. Returning to the U.K. in early 1896, Carpendale obtained a 1st Class Certificate in gunnery in Excellent and was appointed to the command of the torpedo boat destroyer Whiting, in which capacity he was present in the 1897 Jubilee Review and received the Medal. Further foreign service ensued, on the North America and China stations, followed by a appointments in the Naval Ordnance Department at the Admiralty and at the R.N.C. Greenwich, and he was advanced to Commander in June 1904 and to Captain in December 1910. Back at sea in the period leading up to the Great War, he served in the cruiser Edgar, flagship of Vice-Admiral George Le C. Egerton, C.B., Commander in Chief at the Cape of Good Hope and South Africa Station, and in the cruiser Good Hope as Flag Captain to Rear-Admiral Frederick C.D. Sturdee, C.V.O., G.M.G., Commanding the 5th Cruiser Squadron. In September 1914, he took command of the cruiser Donegal, serving with the 6th Cruiser Squadron in the Grand Fleet, and he remained likewise employed until appointed to the command of the light cruiser Colleen in August 1915. Then on relinquishing this appointment in July 1917, he took command of the cruiser Achilles in the North America and West Indies Squadron, prior to ending the war as a Commodore 2nd Class in Charge of Auxiliary Patrol. He was awarded the C.B. in June 1918 and mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 16 September 1919, refers), and appointed an A.D.C. to the King. Carpendale’s final seagoing appointment was in command of the Benbow in 1919-21, in which period he landed a party of Royal Marines at the time of the Occupation of Constantinople during the Greco-Turkish War. He was advanced to Rear-Admiral and – at his own request – was placed on the Retired List in the summer of 1923. He was however advanced to Rear-Admiral (Retired) in October 1926. B.B.C. Subsequently recruited by Lord Reith, he served as Deputy Director-General and Controller of the British Broadcasting Corporation (B.B.C.) in 1923-38, in addition to holding the Presidency of the International Broadcasting Union in 1925-35. Throughout his service he was mainly concerned with administration, but his personal touch was nonetheless widespread and, in emergencies such as the General Strike of 1926, he was always ready and welcome to lend a hand in the studio. His common-sense approach - feet firmly on the ground - was appreciated by all and smoothed the way for the Corporation’s rapid expansion, as well as serving as a means of calming more temperamental members of staff. In fact, Carpendale’s transparent integrity and famous ‘quarter-deck manner’ – always accompanied by a twinkle in his eye and a ready smile – did much to promote confidence in his leadership, so much so that it said the staff adored him. He was certainly well-known for his participation in their social activities, ranging from dances and sporting events to taking part in plays. But such physical activity was very much up his street, his recreations including winter sports, riding and mountaineering. The Admiral, who was appointed a Knight Bachelor in June 1932 and served as the Ministry of Information’s Liaison Officer at the Air Ministry in the Second World War, died in March 1968. Sold with copied record of service and other research.
