Morne Du Plessis limited edition signed print with signing photo Morne du Plessis was one of South Africa's greatest rugby players and leaders. He followed in his father's footsteps and is the only father-son combination in Springbok history to captain the team. Under his leadership South Africa won 13 matches and lost only twice.His contribution to Springbok rugby was not over, and in 1995 he played an important role in what was perhaps South Africa's biggest ever triumph in the sport. George Gibbs of Bristol 500 calibre double-barreled express percussion sporting gun, the sidelock with no visible serial number, but chased with scrolls and bearing the makers name, fitted a figured Spanish walnut stock finely chequered to the pistol grip and fore-end (ramrod missing), comes in a vintage wool lined slipcase. 74 cm length of barrels, 118 cm overall length (Front and rear sight missing)

K. Browne, most slips and advertisements present, original pictorial wrappers, some light creasing to early numbers, some repairs to spines, a few numbers neatly rebacked, some neat repairs or restoration to extremities, but very good sets generally, preserved in cloth chemise with bookplate and slip-case, 8vo, [Bobins 1197, 1198, 1199, 1200 & 1409; Tooley 475, 476, 473, 472 & 477], 1853-65. *** An attractive set in the rare and most-desirable wrappered issue. Provenance: Van Santvoord Merle-Smith (bookplate).

[Hunting], 4 hand-coloured etchings, paper watermarked 1808, one plate trimmed at fore-edge, stitched into grey paper wrappers, housed in modern grey paper folder, printed label to upper cover, [Bobins V, 1632; Grego, Gillray, p.272; BM Satires 9588-91; Schwerdt III p.70], oblong folio, 1800. *** ‘This series of four sporting prints was etched by Gillray from the designs of an amateur whose name is indicated hieroglyphically at the corner’ (Schwerdt). 

Alken (Henry) Sporting Anecdotes, 21 hand-coloured soft-ground etchings with aquatint, some light marginal soiling, but a clean, well-margined set generally, contemporary half calf, some cracking to upper joint, morocco label to upper cover lettered in gilt, light fading to foot of upper cover, [Bobins 1386; Siltzer p.62], oblong folio, R. Ackermann, [c.1840]. *** A scarce series of satirical prints. Siltzer notes that Ackermann published this work with 18 plates, and that sets with 21 plates, as here, may be later.

Seymour (James) Twelve Prints of Hunters & Running Horses, taken in various Actions, 12 engraved plates after Seymour, untrimmed with good margins, the first a little browned with chip to foot of margin, held together with neat stitching, preserved in custom drop-back box with label to upper cover, [Bobins 787; Schwerdt 160], oblong folio, Bowles & Carver, [c.1800]. *** A rare set of horse prints that did much to popularise sporting art.

Some Do and Some Don't; It is all a Notion, first edition, one leaf of letterpress, 7 fine hand-coloured aquatint plates, original printed upper wrapper with title bound in (reinforced at inner margin), modern full red morocco, gilt, [Schwerdt I, 22a; Siltzer p.70; Tooley 50; Bobins 752], oblong folio, S. and J. Fuller, [1821]. *** Rare suite of humourous sporting prints under the pseudonym of Ben Tally-Ho. Provenance: Baron Nathan of Churt (bookplate).   

Alken (Henry) [Hunting Discoveries], 7 hand-coloured soft-ground etched plates, each dated March 1 1817, first 2 plates with repaired marginal tears, some light foxing (mostly marginal), modern brown half morocco over marbled boards with green morocco label to upper cover, [Bobins 750; c.f. Schwerdt I, pp.22/23], oblong folio, S. and J. Fuller, 1817. *** A later issue of Sporting Discoveries, or the Miseries of Hunting, which was published a year earlier. 

[Alken (Henry)] Doing the Thing, and the Thing Done, in a series of Sporting Plates, first issue, 8 hand-coloured aquatints, watermarked 1817, marginal spotting, bifolium of publisher's advertisements loosely inserted, original printed wrappers bound-in, modern half-morocco, gilt, [Bobins IV, 1371; Mellon/Snelgrove, p.11; Schwerdt I, p.13 cited under title, Doing It Somehow with 6 plates; Siltzer, p.69; Tooley 24 also calling for 6 plates], oblong 4to, 1818. *** While contemporary advertisements record only plates 3-8 in the primary issue published on 2 March 1818, Tooley notes that plates 1 and 2 of the present set, dated 5 April 1818, were frequently bound alongside the original six. Their integrity as a set of eight prints is confirmed by the original watercolours housed in the Yale Center for British Art, where the full eight are present.

 Cruikshank (Isaac Robert) Going to a Fight The Sporting World in all its variety of Style and Costume along the Road from Hyde Park Corner to Moulsey Hurst, hand-coloured aquatint panorama, 42 numbered scenes on conjoined sheets forming continuous strip, c.60 x 3810mm., rather soiled and browned (particularly at beginning where creased and slightly chipped), a few stains, several tears and repairs, on roller housed in original boxwood drum covered in hand-coloured pictorial aquatint label featuring boxing scene and title at head & foot, drum c.125mm. tall, rubbed and very browned, preserved in modern morocco-backed cloth drop-back box, without the very rare printed key by Pierce Egan (as usual),[Abbey, Life 473; Bobins 1595], Sherwood, Neely & Jones, 1819. Saleroom notice: The wooden piece at the end of the panorama has become detached. *** Depicting a long procession of gentlemen in various carriages and coaches, and even one on a dandy-horse (an early form of bicycle), on their way to see an outdoor boxing match. They pass various buildings and inns along the way, cross a river in boats or on ferries for horses and carriages, arriving at the field for the prize fight complete with betting stands. The final two scenes show a man being tossed by a bull and the interior of a coaching yard.The dandy-horse was a two-wheeled vehicle with a seat, as in a bicycle, but without pedals and propelled by the rider's feet running along the ground. It was invented by the German Karl Drais in 1817 and named a laufmaschine or "running machine", then patented by him in France as a vélocipède in 1818. This panorama, dated 1819, therefore shows an early example in England.

Barenger (James) [New Invented Borders for Rooms...Representing Field Sports in Great Variety], 28 hand-coloured aquatint plates with aquatint grey wash borders, plates 5-15 loose, captions to plates 4 and 6 trimmed with loss, marginal tear to plate 21, tear within plate to plate 22, some marginal foxing and staining, contemporary roan-backed marbled wrappers, covers repaired and torn, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, [Mellon, p.43; Siltzer, p.79; Bobins 1176], long oblong folio, C. Random, 1809-10. *** The title comes from the plate captions with no letterpress issued. The suite of plates represent various sporting subjects intended for decorating a room - hunting, racing, coursing and shooting - and were engraved by J. Sutherland and H. Merlee after Barenger, a successful sporting artist, who exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1807 and 1831. Rare at auction with no copy bar this one traced. 

Alken (Henry) [Sporting Anecdotes], 16 hand-coloured etchings, Alken's original pencil drawing of 'plate 4' bound-in, Alken's original watercolour sketch of 'plate 12' bound-in, interleaved with blanks, one with ink annotations, 5 plates with marginal tears (repaired), disbound, housed in modern red morocco-backed box, [Bobins IV, 1384; Siltzer, p.62 calls for 18 plates, but also some with different titles than cited in this copy], oblong folio, R. Ackermann, [1833-37].
