A Regency mahogany wheel barometer by Matthew Woller of Birmingham, of large form, the swans neck pediment above a hygrometer, thermometer, mirror and 13 inch silvered dial inscribed "Matt W. Woller, Birmingham" and with spirit level beneath, the case being boxwood strung. NOTE - see Edwin Banfield Barometer Makers & Retailer 1760-1900 page 237 for biography. Height 47 ins.

Stampa, London, early 19th century, with 12 inch scroll-centre engraved circular silvered register calibrated in inches and with the usual annotations beneath 5 inch circular white Roman numeral timepiece dial fronting a single fusee circular four pillar movement with tic-tac escapement and signed Holmden, London to backplate, with arched mercury Fahrenheit thermometer to the shaped trunk and hygrometer to the swan neck pediment with ivory vase finial, the rounded base with spirit level signed L. STAMPA, Kirby Str"t, Hatton Garden, London and setting pointer adjustment square, the case with line-edged crossbanded borders to front edges, 126cm high. L. Stampa is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS & RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working circa 1800-20 where it is noted that he seemed to specialise in larger wheel barometers incorporating timepieces. Descr.New Instrument invented by John Hadley for taking the Latitude or other Altitudes at Sea... 32pp. folding engraved frontispiece signature of Charles Vallancey at head of title and numerous ink annotations ?in his hand a little soiled later calf-backed cloth 8vo by E.Say 1748. ***John Hadley (1682-1744) was a mathematician and scientific mechanist. “In 1730 independently of Thomas Godfrey of Philadelphia Hadley invented a quadrant (actually a double-reflecting octant) for measuring the altitude of the Sun or a star above the horizon to find geographic position at sea. His double-reflecting principle made accurate determinations of location much easier. Hadley also fixed a spirit level to the instrument so that a meridian altitude at sea could be taken when the horizon was not visible. His device later evolved into the sextant.” Encyclopaedia Britannica Charles Vallancey (1721-1812) antiquary and scholar of Irish history and languages. He also translated French works on fortification and engineering..
