Founded in 1928, De Soto was an American automobile brand (named after the Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto) manufactured and marketed by the DeSoto Division of the Chrysler Corporation until 1961 when the brand was dropped. A Starr Arms Company New York large scale revolver. 1858 Army double action 6 shot revolver, numbered 21152 to bullet chamber, the wooden handle initialled LAB, L28cm Condition Report: Marks, wear, discolouration to the metal and scuffing to the handle in places, commensurate with age and previous use. Inside of barrel appears to be in good condition considering age, with wear related marks. Cylinder rotates and locks fully. No obvious signs of major damage or repair. Incised no. 2179S/ Adams Patent/37605, with several Victorian proof marks, with walnut handle, L24cm Condition Report: Mechanism appears to be working smoothly. Barrell is rifled. Cylinder has no obvious signs of movement side to side. Cylinder moves smoothly. Marks, wear and scratches present throughout as expected and caused through age and previous use.

Livingston (David), A 2 page letter relating to the Peace society dated Nov, 1860 written and signed by David Livingston discussing the death of Joeseph Sturge (Quaker and political activist), transcribed below. MY DEAR SIR, In reference to your letter of 30 Dec 1859, giving me an account of the decease of our much esteemed friend Joseph Sturge, I may be allowed to explain that he favoured me with a letter while I was engaged with several very trying public meetings in Glasgow, Edinburgh, I just opened it and saw that it was on the subject of Peace then put it aside in the hope of attending to what was said the first time I had leisure. Unfortunately I never saw it again, & have no idea how it was lost. It however remained on my mind that I had not treated him as I ought to have done, and to get rid of that feeling I wrote stating some difficulties that seem to stand in the way of the adoption of Peace principles. You appear to have answered them very fairly and I thank you and Mrs. Sturge for the trouble you have taken. I pray that the Almighty may so guide my steps so that it shall never be forced upon me to fight with either black or white, but I cannot but believe that war in some cases is both necessary & just. At best it is a monstrous evil,—and never to be resorted to except under the gravest necessity. In African forays we have the worst evils of war and I think that Christians ought to exert themselves to establish lawful intercourse with the degraded heathen. It seems certain that intercourse will be established and the good ought to forestall the advances of the bad. Some of the Friends ought to put their principles to the test of practise and appear among us the harbingers of peace. I lately marched 600 miles up this river on foot, people all friendly except those near the Portuguese, I carried a stick only until passing through a tangled forest alone, a Rhinoceros made a charge and stopped short when within 3 yards of me, ever after I carried a Revolver, My kind regards to Mrs. Sturge. dating: about 1870 provenance: Belgium, Octagonal, rifled, 9 mm cal barrel, provided with front sight. Six-shot cylinder with remains of ancient bluing and gilded outlines. Mechanism working in single and double action. The loading gate is also blued. The rest of the revolver with small remains of bluing and outlining. Wooden grips. Ring for the strap. Marks of the Liège test bench. Marked with 'CHAMELOT DELVIGNE INV. B.TE'. Cleaning is needed on the metal parts. Kept in an ancient wooden case (probably not pertinent). Lined with green cloth and provided with some accessories. length 25 cm.

dating: about 1870 provenance: England, Short, cylindrical, 5 mm cal. barrel, five-shot cylinder, frame with crowned stamp 'Z'; working mechanism. The revolver is kept inside a rigid, metallic case provided with two compartments, one with an expanding purse and number '401' (small damages), the other is bigger and contains the revolver. Pushing a button on the case, the stopper that blocks the barrel raises and the trigger drops. Lifting a tear-tape, the box can be opened to load and upkeep the revolver. Provided with an extraction ramrod at the inside; the inner valves with remains of silvering. The upper border marked 'FRANKENAU'S PATENT'. See 'Firearms Curiosa' by Lewis Winant (Bonanza Books NY), pages 157 - 162. At page 159 a piece very similar to this one is shown (the case is slightly different), provided with the Frankenau's patent too. Another piece can be found in 'The Revolver 1865 - 1888' di A.W.F. Tylerson (Herbert Jenkins), description at page 209. O. Frankenau obtained the patents for this revolver both in the United States and in the UK in 1877.Another piece of this extremely interesting revolver can be found in Harry Mann's collection. See Vedi 'Pepperbox Firearms' by Jack Dunlar, USA 1964, chapter 'Pepperbox curiosa', page 271 picture nr. 14. dimensions 10.7 x 2.5 x 6.7 cm.

Smooth, six-shot cylinder, with a disk-shaped screw underneath to load and unload the cylinder. Smooth frame. Secure-lock. Ring trigger. Wooden grip scales. Suspension ring. Interesting revolver of Italian production. length 26 cm.

dating: about 1870 provenance: Papal States, Round, rifled, 9 mm cal. barrel, with foresight; smooth, six-shot cylinder; iron frame, stamped and marked 'F.LLI MAZZOCCHI ROMA', provided with loading gate on the left; grip with checkered, wooden grip scales and ring for the strap. Serial number '170'. This rare revolver was built in Rome, for the Papal Gendarmerie, by Mazzocchi, following the model of the Belgian patent 'Chamelot et Delvigne'. length 20.5 cm.

dating: 1853 - 1857 provenance: London, Octagonal, rifled, 36 cal barrel (bore needs cleaning, visible rifling) with the rear marking 'ADDRESS. COL: COLT LONDON.' The left side featuring marks of the London test bench, number '5', and serial number '9xx'. Missing wedge screw. The barrel with 30% of its antique bluing. The cartridge rammer with remains of coeval bluing and without numbers. Polished cartridge rammer and with serial number coeval with the barrel. Six-shot cylinder with 40% of the antique bluing, marks of the test bench, a scene of a naval battle featuring the writing 'ENGAGED 16 MAY 1843', the mark 'COLT'S PATENT' and the same serial number as the barrel, remains of a scarcely-legible inscription 'Engraved ...' at the bottom, then with number '5'. Mechanism needs revision (the hammer rotates the cylinder, but does not load the trigger). Frame with 70% of bluing, 'COLT'S PATENT' marking on the left side, and coeval serial number at the bottom. Brass grip bands with most of the antique silver plating. Small rounded bridge. Serial number coeval with the other pieces on both bands, the one of the bridge with mark 'R'. Smooth walnut handle. Remains of a name marked on the bottom. In its antique case of the right size, with purple velvet lining (worn and with little damages), provided only with a flask marked 'J. BARLOW PATENT '. Interesting revolver with very low and coeval serial number on the components. The 'First Model' produced in London was provided with brass (not steel) bands on the handle, see 'Flayderman's Guide' 9th Edition page 90 (5B-062). length 33,3 cm.
