Annie has for many years taught art classes in Surrey, including the University of Surrey, where her work is held in the University’s prestigious art collection. I see my work as a contemporary interpretation of the tradition of Romantic landscape painting. It is inspired by an emotional response to the natural world, investigating the often transient qualities of time, space, memories or emotions with expressive semi-abstract painting. My painting process evolves through transforming and abstracting the subject. Layers of transparent paint are applied to the surface to create an atmospheric quality that suggest an unveiling or discovery of the poetic mystery of the landscape. www.annieboisseau.com. I was very happy to be involved in the last TLC Art Auction and to learn about the amazing work the charity does in developing kidney transplant services in countries where it is needed most. It's a great feeling to be a small part of something that makes such a big difference simply by donating an artwork!.When I heard that this year's Art Auction was going to be the theme of a Deck of cards, I thought ' brilliant ' , Christmas presents sorted!.I jumped in quite quickly with wanting to paint the Ace of spades. I didn't want to do something too obvious, so I decided to paint a brooding atmospheric landscape which could be seen through the framework of the Ace of spades. This offers a choice of either retaining the whole 'Ace' or removing the mount to reveal the full landscape! Either way, I hope it goes towards helping this ace charity! Robert Fitzmaurice (b.1960). 3 of Spades. Mixed media on card. 28 x 20cm. Framed. Robert Fitzmaurice: I am a visual artist whose output involves painting, mixed media and collage. My figurative style is fragmentary and references both the art of the past and contemporary culture. I usually work in series with each work involving an interplay between one or more figures and ambiguous forms in order to invoke a particular mood, e.g. contemplative, melancholy, or dramatic. The figures operate in a shallow, theatrical space and tend to possess the frontality and expressive shorthand common to votive art of all cultures. These elements combine to suggest an absurd universe where meaning is fluid and open to interpretation. Often I will start a series of works with an idea inspired by something recently seen or read. Other times I may work more instinctively from images found in books, postcards, the cinema or online. I may also start a new work by tracing an old drawing, or the overpainting and collaging of earlier works, especially proof prints and print matrices. The composition is then subjected to a number of revisions and embellishments. The paint layers involve open brushwork, impasto and glazes, and are often further modified by the introduction of sand, sawdust or collage elements. Colour decisions are driven by the emotional tone and to balance the composition. I am very interested in how the mind assigns value to imagination and experience and how these meet to produce a work or art. My tendency to simplify, filter and truncate is in response to the fragmented and bewildering surfeit of images available to contemporary audiences. Artists of different periods and cultures have used the human figure in order to convey a narrative or personify a concept. By referencing the formal potency of these otherwise outmoded and compromised systems I wish to draw attention to a common ground, or sometimes a point of departure, in order to highlight the absurdities that continue to divide us. The power dynamics of childhood, family and rites of passage feature strongly as I consider they have a universal significance that transcends religion, myth or dogma. Originally from Coventry I studied Fine Art in Sunderland before moving to Reading in 1984 for my MFA. After years of making art around a day-job I became a full-time artist in 2015. I hold a studio in the town at OpenHand OpenSpace and participate regularly in exhibitions nationally and internationally. www.fitzmaurice.works. Interview with the artist: Why did you want to take part in this fundraising initiative I was invited to participate in the 2016 TLC Art Auction and really enjoyed being part of that. I therefore didn't hesitate to get on board with this project. Can you tell us about your artwork What inspiration did you draw on to create your designMy design includes a small central sprite realised through the union of the three spades. In my work I am interested in invoking the figure through a mixture of figuration and abstraction. The spades suit suggested to me a rather austere and weathered character which I have sought to reflect in my choice of materials and surface effects. What is it about the charity Transplant Links that made you want to support them I am very impressed by the important work TLC does in developing countries. Their work makes life-saving operations a reality for those in need. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Lizzie Riches (b.1950). 10 of Spades. A4 size, gouache on paper. Framed. Lizzie Riches was born in East London in 1950 and grew up near Epping Forest, where she first developed a love of natural history. Lizzie went to Camberwell School of Art and to Goldsmiths, but felt out of sympathy with the painting styles of the late sixties and preferred to develop her own visual language. Riches lived for many years in rural Suffolk, however it was not the landscape that inspired her, but the birds, animals, plants and insects that she found there. Her interests have widened to exotic flora and fauna and she is particularly fascinated by the relationship between human civilisation and the natural world. Portal Painters first exhibited Lizzie Riches work in 1976 and she has exhibited with them ever since, Lizzie has had solo exhibitions in Chicago and Paris. In 1990 London Transport commissioned a painting as part of the ‘Art in the Underground’ series. Recent commissions include sixteen paintings for P&O’s luxury cruise liner ‘Aurora’ many of which show her current passion for painting people. A series of eighteen paintings depicting the character and history of the classic and noble grape varieties were commissioned by Websters Wine Publishers for 'Grapes & Wines' by Oz Clarke. In 2000, Leopold Joseph Private Bank acquired and commissioned several paintings for their boardroom. In the same year Lizzie undertook an eighty foot mural for a country house in Kent. In the summer of 2012 Lizzie undertook a series of eighteen paintings for an exhibition in the National Trust property Blickling Hall in Norfolk. The exhibition was in the world famous seventeenth century library and reflected the history of the family and gardens. A recent series of portrait ‘anomalies’ with people portrayed in Elizabethan and Jacobean clothes with a contemporary element have proved very popular. Lizzie Riches often undertakes commissioned paintings, usually portraits executed in her own imaginative style. Riches paintings are in The Sainsbury, Standard Chartered and Prudential Collections and in 2016 Lizzie was commissioned to undertake a number of paintings for the Restaurant and Bar area of the recently refurbished Queen Mary, these were loosely in the style of Doris Zinkheisen who had painted the original murals. Lizzie Riches exhibits exclusively with Portal Painters at the major London Art Fairs. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Martin Ridgwell. 4 of Diamonds, 'Diamond Geezers'. Drawing, graphite with body colour. Signed under mount. 29 x 21cm. Framed. Martin Ridgwell is an Artist and Printmaker based in London. Ridgwell was elected a member of The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 2007. I liked the concept of The Deck of Cards collaboration, and the charity itself does incredibly important work so I was glad to sign up. However, the main reason why I came on board is because it was Baroness Floella Benjamin asking me if I would like to consider taking part, so what choice did I have I mean this Floella Benjamin we're talking about ! If she asks you to do something - you do it. As soon as I read the brief, I immediately knew that I wanted the Three of Diamonds for my card, as in my head I had already conjured up the image of three young guys lounging in a rather louche way on a bed, playing with trinkets from an old jewellery box. Much to my vexation, someone else had got there before me and had already swiped it for themselves, so I quickly snatched the Four of Diamonds before anyone else could get to it - but wondering all the time how on earth I was now going to fit four stripling lads onto a piece of paper the size of a playing card Turns out all I had to do was ask them to all budge up on the bed a little bit and there was room everyone. Looking back at my original thumb nail sketch I'm surprised to see just how close it is to the finished art work, the image and composition must have been very clear in my head at the time. Where the actual idea for the image came from is not so clear, but I liked the incongruity of these four rather unwholesome characters lying on satin sheets and draping themselves in jewellery. I've been meaning to play with this theme since I last watched the movie sweet Charity, where the film's heroine ( an employee at a dance hall where clients pay to spend time with her ), encounters a famous film star who takes her back to his glamorous apartment. She cant believe her luck, and wishes her little gang of co-workers could see her now in the lap of luxury. So I guess that's basically where the germ of the idea came from for my drawing, just wanting to see how my ruffians would fare in a more glamorous setting. Obviously they're taking to it very well and that in turn led to the title of the piece, what else but Diamond Geezers. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Vanessa Gardiner (b.1960). 7 of Diamonds, 'Godrevy Point 2017'. Acrylic on paper. Signed verso: 'Godrevy Point, Acrylic on paper, Vanessa Gardiner, 2017'. 21 x 15cm. Framed. Vanessa Gardiner was born in Oxford in 1960 and studied Fine Art Painting at Central School of Art and Design in London. Her distinctly linear, geometric style of painting is inspired by the elemental coastal features of cliff and sea. She says of this painting of Godrevy Point in Cornwall:I went there for the first time last year, to discover for myself this darkly slated promontory, ending with a small island bearing a lighthouse. With its deep turquoise inlets and precipitous cliffs, there are certain echoes of the architectural formations that I know so well up the coast at Bostcasle, yet excitingly it also offers new configurations of shape and structure. She has had solo exhibitions since 1991 in London and her work is held both in private and public collections worldwide. I was particularly drawn to the innovative idea of using a pack of cards chosen for the Transplant Links auction this year and it struck me as an interesting quandary to try to incorporate a playing card it into my work, especially as it is not something I’ve done before. The dramatic cliffs at Godrevy Point in Cornwall is a coastline I’ve been working from for a while, and so when I was invited to participate I was intrigued to see if I could use a vertical image of the landscape into the design.I’m delighted and honoured to be able to help TLC; since participating in the auctions, I’ve discovered more and more about the charity’s amazing achievements and it’s a real pleasure to be involved in this way. Sue Munson (b.1949). 8 of Diamonds. Signed verso. 26.8 x 20.4cm. Framed. Sue Munson: I am influenced by everyday events, and how my mind interprets and processes these happenings. My work proposes another way of seeing and feeling. During the ’80s I lived in North America where I studied art, and embroidery specialising in 19th century needlework. Returning to the UK I studied Textile Art, Design and contemporary embroidery. After graduating, I found working on canvas and other supports far more exciting and spontaneous: the principles I had learned stayed the same. My minimalist paintings although abstract in appearance contain a hidden depth of marks and layers which reveal a jewel like burnished effect as hints of colour are exposed. The content within my signature shape veers from the energy and exuberance of mark making to the quiet contemplation of a straight line. The lively and the contemplative. My abstract work plays a huge part in my creative output allowing me to explore larger themes and ideas which eventually return me to the serenity of my minimalist work. He is an active member of the well recognised artistic community of Penwith and exhibits regularly with the Newlyn Society of Artists. Music has always been an important part of Frost's creativity and has been an inspiration for many years; more recently his personal artistic language has developed alongside the music he listens to in his studio. He has always believed music to be the ultimate artform and says that he has been inspired far more strongly by musicians than by other artists. Over the years Anthony's work has been exhibited at many of the major galleries in the UK and he has had solo exhibitions in London, Canterbury, Hull, Newlyn, Cambridge, Jersey and Gutersloh in Germany. This year Jackie exhibited in Athens and London. A solo show at Winchester College gallery is programmed in for 2019. Jackie’s work is inspired by human behaviour, in particular the subtle nuances of body language which often reveal feelings of vulnerability, power or indifference. Current paintings also focus on the domestic environment using home decor as a means of human expression, providing props and clues for the viewer to interpret. This initiative is an original way to raise money, both for the artists and buyers. I have been involved in a number of postcard shows so it is quite interesting to work to a different brief. I am looking forward to purchasing the deck! The Jack of Diamonds was a careful choice - referencing a shortened version of my name and the riches (diamonds) relating to raising money for charity. I love the traditional imagery of a deck of cards and guessed there would be lots of contemporary interpretations which I look forward to seeing. My creation is a nod to tradition, the ‘Jacks’ top and tailing- and an anchor to a deck containing more abstract imagery. My inspiration comes from Alice in Wonderland and the white rabbit. TLC is a small charity and I feel a very connected to the cause. There is a direct link between creating the work and raising money for something really worthwhile. Aimee and Jennie are also fantastic and make us feel really valued! Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Her work has been featured in Witches & Pagans magazine, VAROOM, Amelia's Magazine, Firewords, SOFFA, Communication Arts, DPI Magazine and exhibited at Somerset House, The Lyric Theatre and Glyndebourne. Katie's inspirations include Stravinsky, Joni Mitchel, Coco Rosie, Audrey Niffenegger, Poppy (Katie's cat), ballet and yoga. I was delighted to be able to contribute to help TLC - not only is it a worth while cause but I thought the idea of curating a deck of cards in this way was a really inspired idea. I am excited to see all the different designs together. I love playing with symmetry in my work. Working with symmetry and faces looking at each other is something I often do and this fitted in nicely with the traditional layout for card designs. I wanted to do my own modern take on a traditional playing card. I am proud to support Transplant links through contributing my illustration. I really admire how it’s a charity that not only provides life saving treatments, it also educates and enables doctors in deprived hospitals to develop their own skills to be able to treat their patients. I am pleased to think that money raised through the auction will help empower doctors to help their future patients and save many lives. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Dan Hillier. King of Diamonds. 1/1 print with gold leaf, pencil, pen and ink. Signed and dated '17. 72.1 x 50.3cm. Framed. Dan lives and works in Hackney, London, making art for himself and for exhibitions and a few galleries, and he sometimes collaborates with others, including Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London, The Folio Society, rock bands Architects, Royal Blood, The Broken Family Band and Steven James Adams, and most recently creating the opening titles to BBC1's major 6-part drama 'Requiem'. Dan's most recent solo show, 'Ceremony', was held at Saatchi Gallery, November 2016 - January 2017. In 2015 he was invited by the British Council to represent Great Britain at the Giant Creator Show in Beijing, China. Perhaps that's why they call him 'The Ambassador'. Framed. TLC is a great organisation and I love the idea of a disparate group of artists making a varied pack of cards without knowing what the others have been up to. I like the archetype of the King, and diamonds have a beautiful symbolism in many cultures. I had a loose idea of the diamond as indication of the enlightened mind, as found in Buddhist symbology, when I made this, and wanted the piece to be quite cosmic and have a somewhat archetypal feel to it.TLC is clearly a life-saving, life-enhancing charity that propagates amazing, important work, giving people a chance at life that they might otherwise lose. I love the bringing together of such a diverse range of artists and celebrities to generate excitement about the art and the auction. I think the Deck of Cards theme is particularly inspirational and also a wonderful idea to have reproductions as well as originals, so offering more affordable options. Can you tell us about your artwork What inspiration did you draw on to create your designI wanted my Three of Clubs to have a rather moody atmosphere and an expressive-abstract style which is close to my natural way of working. Lot 52

Alexander Vorobyev (b.1952). Jack of Clubs, 'Tank-Man'. Watercolour. 17.5 x 12.6cm. My art is my attempt to fuse together something that might not even be compatible - the avant-guarde of the XX century and the medieval mysticism. In this miniature one can see the same reminiscences of what I saw in my childhood and the things that caught my imagination for the rest of my life - the medieval etchings and XVI - XVII centuries etchings. My father bought me a book by a German author as a present, when I was just 15 years of age. It was the picaresque novel of the lower Baroque style, written in 1668 by Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen, and the title of the book was ''Der Abenteuerliche Simplicissimus Teutsch''. The full subtitle is The life of an odd vagrant named Melchior Sternfels von Fuchshaim: namely where and in what manner he came into this world, what he saw, learned, experienced, and endured therein; also why he again left it of his own free will. This book was brilliantly illustrated with the XVII century etchings. Phantasmagories and metamorphoses in depicting of the main character of the book have been forever imprinted in my memory. That is how the artistic image of the Tank-Man has appeared. In this watercolour I use a few of my favourite symbols: skulls, letters, machinery, or mechanisms, life and death. This grotesque figure shows a touch of black humour, or medieval carnival. It is created in my usual manner - preparing the background, then washing it off, transferring of the drawing and followed up by colouring it in. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Ewbank's are waiving all vendor commission for the charity. Jake and Dinos Chapman (b.1966 & 1962). Queen of Clubs. A4 size. Signed. Felt-tip on paper. Framed. The Queen of Clubs design features the signature smiley face of Jake and Dinos Chapman, who create iconoclastic sculptures, prints, and installations that examine contemporary politics, religion, and morality with searing wit. They first gained recognition with their first solo installation, We Are Artists (1992), in which they stenciled an anti-aesthetic manifesto onto a mud-splattered wall at the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in London. From their etchings of Goya-esque piles of body parts to naked child mannequins whose facial features are replaced with genitalia, the Chapman brothers explore the poles of beauty and pain, humor and horror, the sublime and perverse, the diabolical and the infantile, in ways that shock and confront viewers with their own voyeurism. Please note that final invoices will include buyers' premium at 27% (inclusive of VAT) added to the hammer price. Brendan Neiland RA (b.1941). 'Calypso'. Signed, titled and numbered AP XVI/XVI to margin. 58 x 44.5cm. Framed. Brendan Neiland is one of Britains foremost and contemporary painters and printmakers represented in major museums and galleries worldwide including, in Britain, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Tate Gallery London, The Collections of the British Council and the Arts Council of Great Britain. He has created some of the most memorable images of modern metropolitan existence. His work has been commissioned by leading commercial companies, public service institutions and education establishments and has been the subject of several television documentaries and video programmes. Informed by the practice of photography yet influenced by a sense of the poetics of lights and pictorial structure which can be related to the work of Braque or Magritte, Corot or Vermeer, the art of Brendan Neiland is eloquent of the enigma of existence as it has been manifest in the modern era. At once intimate and grand, celebratory and melancholy, his work often features the soaring glass and steel structures typical of the era’s corporate architecture. At the same time, the work embraces a range of spiritual matters. Able to convey the depths of longing contained within a moments reflection - in the mystery of mirrored light, held in creative equipose between worlds of culture and nature, technology and spirit - Brendan Neiland is an artist whose work appeals to both the public and private realm. He returned to London to study Fine Art, first at Byam School of Art (now Central Saint Martins College) and then at Goldsmiths College, where he received his MFA.Shonibare’s work explores issues of race and class through the media of painting, sculpture, photography and film. Shonibare questions the meaning of cultural and national definitions. His trademark material is the brightly coloured ‘African’ batik fabric he buys in London. This type of fabric was inspired by Indonesian design, mass-produced by the Dutch and eventually sold to the colonies in West Africa. MERAB ABRAMISHVILI (GEORGIAN 1957-2006)Crucifixion, 2006gesso and tempera on canvas laid on panel50 x 40 cm (19 3/4 x 15 3/4 in.)signed in Georgian lower right; signed, titled and dated on verso; bears a signed authenticating inscription from the artist's wife, Tsitsino Tsertsvadze, on versoEXPERTISEWe are grateful to Keti Abramishvili for confirming the authenticity of this painting. LOT NOTESMerab Abramishvili was a prominent Georgian artist, whose talent started to bloom at an early age. His art teacher and mentor, Alexander Bandzeladze, encouraged young Merab to search, develop, and pursue his own visual style and language. In his teenage years, Abramishvili took part in research expeditions to study the Georgian frescoes of the 7th century at Ateni Sioni Church, led by his father - Dr. Guram Abramishvili - an expert in Georgian and Oriental medieval art. This journey inspired the artist so much that he started to copy the frescoes from the church walls and continued this work for many years. He later merged the style of Oriental miniatures with the gesso technique he learned from those frescoes. This resulted in a unique style of painting that Abramishvili works are known for. His first important piece, 300 Aragvians (1978), was painted with tempera on a board with gesso priming and finished with egg yolk solution. With a mural-like representation, the artwork introduces a viewer to the complex combination of diverse philosophies and cultural aesthetics that would remain unaltered throughout the artist`s life. Merab Abramishvili returned to ancient religious and mythological subjects over and over again.

Patrick Pye RHA (1929-2018)Abraham's SacrificeTriptych, oil and pastel on card, 48cm x 82cm (19 x 32¼'')Dated 1988Patrick Pye was not raised in a religious household, however he developed a strong sense of faith and converted to Catholicism in his thirties. Patrick Pye was a talented artist from a young age and he drew great inspiration from the religious paintings of El Greco, being drawn to his dramatic and expressionistic style. In 1957, Pye won the Mainie Jellett Scholarship, a stipend that allowed him to travel Europe and, in particular, to visit the National Museum of Barcelona where he was further inspired by its collection of Romanesque Catalan art. From here, much of Pye’s artistic output was dictated by Christian iconography and many of his pieces now hang in religious institutions.‘Abraham’s Sacrifice’ is typical of Pye’s spiritual works, using art to bring his faith into the physical spectrum. In his own words, Pye wished “to open the doors of perception so that the outer world is seen united with its spiritual meaning.” Here, Pye breaks down a complex narrative into bold blocks of colour and presents us with the Old Testament story of Abraham and Isaac. Having been ordered by God to sacrifice his son, Abraham is bent over Isaac with his knife raised. In pathetic fallacy, the day has grown dark, with the tumultuous sky raging above. To the left, the shadow continues, with an ominous cross extending towards the viewer to guide their line of vision to rest on the tragic form of the pieta. The two scenes complement each other, urging the viewer to draw parallels between the two stories and to reminisce on God’s ultimate sacrifice for his people. In stark contrast, the right-hand panel completes the narrative on a more joyous note. The bright blue sky is interrupted only by the rainbow, a symbol acting as a reminder of God’s covenant with man. A sacrificial ram is presented to Abraham to take the place of his son as a sign of God’s mercy, the purity of its white coat being reflected in the angel’s robes above. This panel, though not the focus of the work, is instrumental to the piece at it converts the image to one of optimism and hope.Helena Carlyle, August 2018

Oisin Kelly RHA (1915-1981)Kilcorban MadonnaTerracotta, 62cm high (24½'')Sculptor Oisín Kelly (1915-81) is best known for his large public bronzes, such as Two Working Men at the County Hall, Cork (1969), The Children of Lir at the Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, Dublin (1971), Jim Larkin in O’Connell Street, Dublin (1977), and The Chariot of Life at the Irish Life Centre, Dublin (1982). But he also made a great many smaller pieces, in various media. Many of these deal with devotional themes, and his religious works are to be seen in churches throughout the country. The statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Infant Christ illustrated here has an interesting history. Oisín was greatly influenced by medieval Irish art, and this piece was inspired by the Kilcorban Madonna, an oak carving which dates from around the year 1200. It is currently on display in the Clonfert Diocesan Museum, Co. Galway. Oisín was commissioned by the Reverend Thomas Hogan to carve a similar piece for the restored Ballintubber Abbey, Co. Mayo, and it was completed in 1966. It was often his practice to treat the same theme in different media, and he decided to make this stoneware version of the statue, of which six copies were kiln-fired. During boyhood visits to the Conamara Gaeltacht, Oisín developed a love for traditional Irish céilí dancing. From the beginning of his career as a sculptor he was fascinated by the challenge of convincingly representing céilí dancers in movement. One of his earliest works was a male dancer in stained wood, and he also modelled a popular Dancing Couple, which was included in the Kilkenny Design Workshops ceramic range. Another lively piece comprises a group of three dancers, carved in wood. The bronze figure illustrated here is one of an issue of seven: it is a smaller version of Dancing Girl, on permanent display at Fitzgerald Park, Cork.Fergus S. Cilicia, Tarsos AR Stater. Circa 440-400 BC. BMC -; SNG von Aulock -; SNG Copenhagen -; SNG France -; SNG Levante -; Traité -; Casabonne -; MIMAA -; for obv. type cf. SNG France 213 = Casabonne pl. 2, 10; for rev. type cf. MIMAA type D4, pl. V, 7. 10.66g, 20mm, 10h. Extremely Fine. Unique and unpublished; of great numismatic interest. From a private North American collection. 'Syennesis' was the title held by the local Tarsiote dynasts of Cilicia, at least three of whom figured prominently in Near-Eastern history. The first, an independent monarch in his own right, joined with Nebuchadnezzar in mediating between Cyaxares of Media and Alyattes of Lydia in circa 610 BC. The second appears as a vassal of the Achaemenid king Darius I, and whose daughter was married to Pixodaros, son of Maussolos. He was perhaps the same man whom Herodotos mentioned as one of the most distinguished of the subordinate commanders in the fleet of Xerxes I. The last recorded Syennesis participated in the rebellion of Cyrus the Younger against Artaxerxes II as described in detail in Xenophon's Anabasis. The lack of any further mention of this dynasty following the events of Cyrus' rebellion has long been taken as meaning that the syennesis was forcibly retired and a satrapy established in his place; the general and long-held acceptance by numismatists such as J. P. Six, E. Babelon and C. M Kraay of the obverse horseman portraying the Tarsiote syennesis has therefore complicated the dating of such issues (for an in-depth discussion see Casabonne, Le syennésis cilicien et Cyrus : l'apport des sources numismatiques, 1995). Casabonne does not refute the identification of the obverse figure as the syennesis, but he cautions against attempting to identify particular individuals within the series, rather suggesting the type should be considered in a less literal manner, and, viewed as evidence that the "Tarsiote monetary iconography attests to a certain continuity of relations between the central and local powers", he accepts the type as being certainly "charged with political significance". This being the case, and despite the fact that numismatists and historians alike have long seen the Tarsiote coinage as probably struck (at least in part) for the payment of such tribute to the Achaemenid king as is attested in several sources (see, for example Strabo XV.3.21), it should nonetheless be viewed primarily as a civic and not military coinage, regardless of what it may eventually have been used to finance. This is amply demonstrated by the reverse of this remarkable coin, which employs a highly intriguing design. The standing figure wearing a Persian kandys and carrying both bow and spear is named by the inscription as Nergal, the Babylonian-Assyrian god of the hunt, of war, pestilence and death. Cults at Hatra in Mesopotamia and much later, at Palmyra, have shown that Nergal was equated with the Hellenic Herakles, an assimilation probably begun by the Assyrians who seem to have equated Nergal to Melqart (see Jenkins, Two New Tarsos Coins 1973). Mary Boyce (A History of Zoroastrianism: Volume II: Under the Achaemenians pp. 272) notes that the cult of Nergal "appears to have been well established in Tarsus... there would appear to be a deliberate attempt here at religious syncretism of a sort, in the interests of secular power"; the unique addition of what appears to be a lion-skin hanging from behind Nergal would seem to support this notion. However, Seyrig (Cylinder Seals, 1939) in tracing the existence of the cult of Nergal also to Palestine, Syria and Cyprus, renders his appearance at Tarsos less surprising, and his depiction, while helping to bridge the gap between older periods and the Greco-Roman times, may not simply be a casual attempt at religious conflation but may reflect some deeper metaphor. Nergal, apart from being a god of war and death, was also a god of vegetation and rebirth, attributes that the Greeks associated with Kore-Persephone. The manner of Nergal's depiction here - specifically, holding a lotus flower - together with the placement of a sacred tree or 'tree of life' (which had ancient, but now poorly understood significance in Assyrian religion) behind him, may be indicative of the reason for his appearance. While the tree may also potentially have roots in the Epic of Gilgamesh, wherein Etana searches for a 'plant of birth' to provide him with a son, its meaning is less clear than that of the the lotus flower. The lotus appears only sporadically in Greek and near-Eastern mythology, though it has a well attested use in Egyptian art and legend, where it was taken as a symbolic representation of the sun on account of its physical behaviour: it closes at night time and descends into the water, rising and flowering again at dawn, thus also becoming by extension a symbol of the eternal cycle of death and rebirth. A potential interpretation of Nergal in this context could therefore indicate his favour being sought for a transition of some sort, to preside over a death and a rebirth, an ending and a beginning, past and future.

A COLLECTION OF RARE 17TH AND 18TH CENTURY SPANISH JEWELLERYA 17TH CENTURY DIAMOND PENDANT/BROOCH, IBERIAN ORIGIN, CIRCA 1690Designed as a stylised bow of open foliate design, set with variously-cut diamonds of grey tint, within closed-back settings, later brooch fitting, mounted in gold, dimensions 5.3x3.3cmIn the sixteenth and well into the seventeenth century, Europeans sourced their gold and precious stones primarily from the Orient, with Goa being the central hub through which these transactions traded. Much of this trade was then imported through Lisbon in Portugal, where many French, German, Italian and Spanish jewellers based their workshops as a result.Originally the preserve of the religious classes, exotic materials were used to create devotional material such as pendant crosses and rosaries. However, this trend began to change towards the end of the 16th century as techniques in gemstone cutting developed and jewellers discovered the dazzling possibilities of the cut and polished stones. Gemstones took on a new importance and prominence, with gold and precious metals being relegated to the role of providing settings and surrounds.By the seventeenth century, the art of the faceted stone had been thoroughly embraced and perfected. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the role of jewellery changed dramatically as a result. A once figurative symbol of religion became the decorative display of the rich and powerful, in turn unleashing all artistic inhibitions and allowing the art of design to truly begin to flourish. At the same time and as fashions continued to develop, jewellery became a far more feminine accessory. Highly influenced by the popular fascination with naturalism which became steadily more popular throughout the Georgian era, abstract and elaborate floral motifs adorned almost everything. Also exceptionally popular at this time was the bow brooch, just like the lot on offer in this sale. Inspired by the silk and velvet bows used to suspend pendants and crosses from the neck and bodice, the bow brooch, usually woven in an intricate filigree of gold and silver and highlighted with precious stones, emphasised the décolletage. It was usually paired with girandole earrings with three to five almond shaped drops, again similar to those illustrated in lot 21.Aided by the discovery of large deposits of gold in Brazil at the start of the eighteenth century and the subsequent discovery of vast diamond mines there, production of exquisite jewels continued in abundance across Europe well into the late 19th century, with advances in techniques and fashions continuing to boost the trend.

Lot 432

2nd-3rd century AD. A schist relief frieze depicting a large stupa in the centre with three tiers of parasols to the top and streamers flowing out; dome of the stupa decorated with bands of floral and geometric motifs, resting on a square base with rosette decoration; to either side of the stupa three monks in long robes, two at the top waving fly whisks and one at the lower left holding a burning censor; large column to the right with figure of a lion to the top; mounted on a custom-made stand. 61.2 kg, 60cm wide including stand (23"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired before 1995. The stupa is the oldest Buddhist religious monument. Stupas originated as pre-Buddhist tumuli in which kings were buried in a seated position. After the death of the Buddha, his remains were cremated and the ashes divided and buried under eight mounds with two further mounds encasing the urn and the embers. The earliest archaeological evidence for the presence of Buddhist stupas dates to the late 4th century BC in India. In early Buddhist art the stupa would often stand as a representation of the Buddha himself as the Buddha strictly informed his disciples not to make images of him and worship them. This changed with the arrival of the Greeks into Central Asia and India and the introduction of Hellenistic art styles and the emphasis on depicting the human body. The shape of the stupa represents the Buddha, crowned and sitting in meditation posture on a lion throne. His crown is the top of the spire; his head is the square at the spire's base; his body is the vase shape; his legs are the four steps of the lower terrace; and the base is his throne. Fine condition.

Lot 523

4th-3rd millennium BC. A fine grained marble figure of a stylised female; flat, fan-shaped head with long prominent nose ridge; flat lozenge-shaped body, small breasts; incised lines for the arms, legs together defined by incised line; mounted on a custom-made support. 430 grams, 27cm including support (10 1/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired from a major Mayfair gallery; acquired on the London art market before 2000. Early Cycladic sculpture comprises predominantly female figures that range from simple modification of the stone to developed representations of the human form, some with natural proportions and some more idealised. Many of these figures, especially those of the Spedos type, display a remarkable consistency in form and proportion that suggests they were planned with a compass. Scientific analysis has shown that the surface of the marble was painted with mineral-based pigments—azurite for blue and iron ores, or cinnabar for red. The exact purpose of these figures is not known but their most likely function is as some sort of religious idol and the predominance of female figures, sometimes pregnant, suggests a fertility deity. Supporting this view is the fact that figurines have been found outside of a burial context at settlements on Melos, Kea and Thera. Alternatively, precisely because the majority of figures have been found in graves, perhaps they were guardians to or representations of the deceased. Fine condition, old repair.

Lot 646

1st-3rd century AD. A ceramic vessel in the form of a kneeling female figure with rounded belly, high, pointed breasts and hands held to the chest; wearing a thin belt to the waist, wide rounded headdress and rings to the ears and nose; decorated with polychrome geometric bands to the chest, back and neck, features painted to the face; perforated to the top of the headdress. For a succinct description of the style see Ligabue, Inti The World That Wasn’t There, 2015, p.81; and Lynton, Marion Out of the Depths, Tomb Figures from West Mexico, 1986, p.61 for the type. 2.1 kg, 30cm (11 3/4"). Property of an American gentleman; acquired 1970s-1990s. [No Reserve]. This kneeling figure originates from the coastal Pacific region of ancient West Mexico. Chinesco art forms part of the Nayarit cultural grouping and belongs to what is known as the shaft tomb culture of late pre classic West Mexico. The shaft tomb culture appears to have flourished in the late pre classic and produced funerary art which developed independently of the stylistic influence of the Olmec, the dominant culture of the pre classic era. This figure would have been placed in a burial chamber with other offerings. The exact function of these figures and vessels is not known however one interpretation is that they served to protect or accompany the deceased in the next life. A unique feature of this type of Chinesco figure is the elaborate use of paint to depict clothing and other markings on the body which may have religious or shamanic significance, the meaning of these now lost in time. This piece appears to show manganese deposits on the surface, a consequence of prolonged burial conditions. Fine condition, some restoration.
