He was appointed Recorder of London in 1676 and knighted the following year. After the Popish Plot (1678-1681) he tried many of the accused, subsequently incurred the displeasure of Charles II through his opposition to the King's removal of the City Corporation's Writs, and was dismissed in 1683. There is a portrait of Dolben by Henry Tilson in Guildhall Art Gallery. ++Old restoration and much old ingrained dirt, the medium uneven and retouched in various passages, lined many years ago on old pine stretchers in 18th c giltwood and composition frame

NB: The Sunshine recorder was originally devised by J.F. Campbell in the mid 19th Century. The device was used to record the duration of Sunshine around the world. The sphere lens would focus the sunlight and would burn a correlating line on the paper placed behind.
