§ ‡ Alan Davie C.B.E., R.A., H.R.S.A. (British 1920-2014) Flutter By Night, 1962 signed, titled, dated and inscribed Opus O.445 (verso) oil on canvas Dimensions:122cm x 152.4cm (48in x 60in) Provenance:Provenance Gimpel Fils, London, where acquired by Mrs Charles Benenson, August 1963 Gimpel Fils, London, where acquired by the present owner, November 2007Literature Alan Bowness, Alan Davie, Lund Humphries, London, 1967, cat. no.381, Note: Alan Davie once noted: ‘Painting is a continuous process which has no beginning or end. There never really is a point in time when painting is NOT’. This sentiment remained his guiding principle across a career spanning over 70 years. Difficult to pin-down as an artist, he worked across disciplines throughout his life: as well as exhibiting his paintings and printmaking internationally, he also designed and made jewellery, wrote poetry and performed as a professional music, most notably as a jazz saxophonist, but also as a cellist and pianist. Davie felt that all these interests and outputs supported and evolved across each other, rather than existing as distinct entities. Davie was equally as diverse in the sources of his inspiration, seeking it across space and time. He, like many artists of his generation, had a specific interest in Jungian ideas of the ‘collective unconscious’, aiming to paint without thought and consideration and to utilise symbols that had recurred across time periods and distance, a method similar to that of improvisation in jazz. Yet, as was so concisely put in the artist’s obituary, published in The Guardian, ‘the miracle was that out of an eclectic art that was part Celtic, part tribal Hopi, part Hindu or Jain or Tibetan Buddhist, part African and part pre-Columbian, with a hint of William Blake, there came painting of power and individuality.’ Despite such wide-ranging influences and inspirations, Davie’s art is always unmistakeably his and this is particularly clear in an example like the present work. Flutter by Night dates from 1962, an interesting moment in Davie’s artistic life. With the benefit of hindsight and the awareness of the longevity of his career, it feels like a relatively early work but is in fact from a period in which he had already gained significant momentum as an artist. It follows his visit to the U.S.A. in 1956 where he exhibited (with the ground-breaking Catherine Viviano Gallery) and also met artists including Willem de Kooning, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. It also follows a significant retrospective at the Whitechapel Gallery in London in 1958. Another retrospective took place at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, in the same year as this painting was made. It is easy to feel a sense of this inspiration and energy in Flutter by Night; expressive and energetic, the gestural brushwork and bright colour break their way through the swathes of grey. Davie was said to have developed his understanding of the role of the artist from Paul Klee: ‘he neither serves nor rules – he transmits.’ In Flutter by Night Davie succeeds in this quest, his painterly improvisation viscerally conveying his vigorous vision, reaching across time and space all the way out to reach us, in the here and now.

Pair: Lieutenant R. B. Norton, 35th Bengal Native Infantry, who was wounded at the Tazeane Pass in September 1842 Defence of Jellalabad 1842, Flying Victory (R. B. Norton, 35th Regt. B.L.J.) contemporarily re-engraved naming in upright capitals; Cabul 1842 (R. B. Norton 35th Regt. B.L.J.) contemporarily re-engraved naming in upright capitals, both medals fitted with replacement small rings and silver bar suspension, contact marks, otherwise toned, very fine (2) £600-£800 --- Robert Bruce Norton is confirmed on the list of officers presented with medals for Jellalabad (as Lieutenant in 35th Bengal N.I.) and is also named in a list of officers who were wounded in the action of 13 September 1842, in the Tazeane Pass, two days before Pollock entered Cabul. He was court martialed on 16 July 1849 at Barrackpore for having absented himself from his quarters without leave, amongst other charges, during which time he took himself to Calcutta and did not reappear until the following day. Found guilty, he was sentenced to be ‘publicly and severely reprimanded’. The full detail of this case was reported in Allen’s Indian Mail and can be accessed online. It is possible that Norton forfeited his medals as a result of this court martial and subsequently acquired replacements which he had re-engraved to suit. Norton’s death was reported in the Gentleman’s Magazine for October 1852: ‘15 August 1852 - At St John’s-hill, Wandsworth, aged 30, Robert Bruce Norton, Lieutenant 35th Bengal Light Infantry, third surviving son of the late Sir John Davis Norton, one of the Judges of the Supreme Court at Madras.’ A ‘Typescript journal and letters of Capt (sic) Robert Bruce Norton, 35th Bengal Native Light Infantry at Jellalabad, 8 Oct 1841 to April 1842’, are held by the National Army Museum (Accession No 1968-07-224).

Jackson Pollock (1912-1956), Mixed Media on Canvas Image Size: 47 1/8 by 39 1/4 inches (120 by 100 cm) All measurements are approximate. Signed (upper left) Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) was a trailblazing American artist and a driving force behind the Abstract Expressionist movement. Renowned for his innovative "drip painting" technique, Pollock redefined artistic boundaries by pouring and splattering paint onto canvases laid on the floor. His artworks, marked by dynamic swirls of color and intricate rhythms, reflect his inner emotional landscape. Pollock's groundbreaking approach encouraged a new dialogue between artist and canvas, as well as the viewer's interpretation. Pollock's radical departure from traditional methods made him an influential figure, shaping the trajectory of modern art. His legacy remains a testament to the transformative power of artistic experimentation and the ability to evoke emotions through abstract form. Please read our policy carefully: 1. Hans Hofmann (1880–1966) was a German-American painter and teacher who played a significant role in the development of abstract expressionism and modern art in the United States. He is known for his innovative use of color and form, as well as his contributions to art education.Hofmann's early work was influenced by Fauvism and Cubism, but he is perhaps best known for his development of a style that combined these influences with his own unique approach. He explored the dynamic interplay between color and form, often creating paintings that seemed to vibrate with energy and movement. One of Hofmann's notable contributions was his role as an influential art teacher. He opened the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts in Munich in the early 20th century and later opened schools in New York and Provincetown, Massachusetts. His teaching had a profound impact on many artists who would later become associated with abstract expressionism, such as Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, and Helen Frankenthaler.Hofmann's own art often featured bold and vibrant colors, dynamic compositions, and a sense of tension between geometric and organic forms. He believed in the spiritual potential of art and viewed color as a powerful force that could convey emotions and ideas beyond the representational. His work has left a lasting impact on modern art, particularly in terms of his exploration of color theory, the push-pull effects of his compositions, and his influence on a generation of artists. Hans Hofmann's contributions to both art practice and art education have solidified his place in the history of 20th-century art.Measures 20 x 24.

After serving the Air Force during World War II, Francis was injured during flight test maneuvers and subsequently hospitalized. It was while he was recovering that he first began to paint. Francis went on to graduate from the University of California, Berkeley in 1950 with a degree in art and began his European travels. His first stop was Paris, where he studied Monet’s “Water Lilies†and developed a relationship with the Matisse family and artists such as Al Held, Joan Mitchell, and Jean-Paul Riopelle. He went on to develop and maintain studios in Bern, Paris, Tokyo, Mexico City, New York and Northern and Southern California.Sam Francis was considered a revolutionary master of color, space, and light. His works call to various art movements - New York Abstract Expressionism, Impressionism, Art Informel, and color field painting. They are characterized by bright, vibrant splashes of color against a luminous white background. Francis took great interest in the creative process, but his understanding of the relationship between color and light set him apart from contemporaries such as Jackson Pollock and solidified him as a key player in contemporary art history.Height: 30 in x width: 25 1/2 inCondition: The sheet is in excellent condition with no tears, rips, losses, or restorations.
