A Pair of Chinese Padouk Wood and Pink Marble Plant Stands, early 20th century, the serpentine shaped tops with beaded border and inset with marble above foliate and pierced friezes, on cabriole legs surmounted by dragon heads and terminating in carved claw feet joined by pierced stretchers41cm by 41cm by 46cmStand One - formerly cracked and with fill marks (but to a good standard) (see images). Various small losses to the carved detail as well as to a section of one of the dragon's heads (see image). Some general natural? fine splits throughout the claw feet. Stand Two - the marble is badly scratched (see images). The top is rather faded. Movement in joints. Further small losses (as photographed).
Levant.- Ray (John) A Collection of Curious Travels & Voyages, 2 vol. in 1, first edition, with initial imprimatur leaf, blank Cc7 and 3pp. publishers' catalogue at end, one or two contemporary ink marginalia, very browned in parts, wormhole to outer margin of preliminaries, short tear to upper edge of pp.237-240 (end of second part) affecting a couple of letters, later ink inscription "G.Vernon 1817" to front pastedown, ex-Horticultural Society of New York copy with Kenneth K.Mackenzie bequest bookplate and one or two unobtrusive embossed stamps, contemporary calf, rubbed, corners worn, rebacked preserving old label, [Keynes, Ray 92; Wing R385], 8vo, for S.Smith and B.Walford, 1693.⁂ The first part is Ray's revision of Nicholas Straphorst's translation of Leonard Rauwolff's 1575 Travels in the Levant, done at the request of Hans Sloane. The second part comprises selected extracts from the works of Belon, Vernon, Spon, Smith, Huntingdon, Greaves, Alpinus, Thevenot and others, whilst the final part is Ray's own catalogue of Levantine plants. This is the standard issue, with catalogue at end headed in English and dated 1693.The plant Rauwolfia is named after Rauwolf who discovered it while travelling in India where it was used to treat snake bites, fever, dysentery and insanity. Mahatma Gandhi is said to have drunk it as a tea to relax at the end of the day. In western medicine it forms the basis of the modern drug reserpine, used to treat high blood pressure.

A Victorian faux calamander and ebonised standish, with a correspondence box above two inkwells and a pen tray, with a drawer below, raised on squashed bun feet, 30.5cm wide x 24cm deep x 23cm high, with a pair of late 19th century Italian pietre dure obelisks, decorated with flowering stems, with stepped bases, one badly chipped and the other with base later filled/restored, 32cm high (3)From the estate of the actor, the late John Challis.Standish - ok, save for some chips, including corners.One obelisk badly chipped, including 4cm base section of front right corner of upper obelisk (just to the right of the flowering stem). This section re-stuck. Chips elswhere, including corners of stepped base. The other with a later filled based, which has been re-stuck. Chipped corners of stepped base and underneath base. Lacking one or two small sections of inlay on stems of plant.
