A Chinese bronze ceremonial bell, Nao Shang Dynasty (1600-1027 BC) Of cup form with scooped rim and raised on a tapering handle, the body cast with Taoist masks to each side. 15cm high FOOTNOTE: Ceremonial bells of this type were assembled in graduated groups of three or five, the small ones hand-held and played facing upwards, the larger ones suspended from a frame. A near identical Shang Dynasty bell can be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, ref.49.136.10.
