MONOCULAR. A five draw monocular, the case overlaid with pierced mother of pearl of exotic birds & animals. Extended length, 9cm.  Condition report: When fully extended you can see distant objects, ie. A postcard on a shelf 3 feet away. There appears to be no damage to the monocular. As to the mother of pearl decoration, it has been added in short sections (approx. 1cm long, each piece) but I cannot say for certain whether they are original to the piece. There is a certain amount of grime in the crevices. Please note that all items in this auction are previously owned & are offered on behalf of private vendors. Dempsey, 18 photographic plates (some folding), numerous colour maps (many folding, including 18 with tabs loose as issued in the separate case), illustrations and diagrams, publisher's red morocco, upper covers titled in gilt with blue and white emblem of the Second Army (slight abrasions to 2 emblems, map box one corner split but firm), folio (332 x 215mm.), Compiled by Headquarters Second Army, [August 1945]; sold with 2 photographs of Major Dempsey, and 2 Panora monocular viewing glasses by Wray of London (7)Footnotes:The Second Army account, one of some only 48 copies printed, and marked 'Secret', is the premier source material for the ground campaign in Europe. The work was compiled by Second Army Headquarters Staff on the instruction of Lieut.-General Sir Miles Dempsey, just after the end of the war whilst memories were fresh ('the staff officers were available, and the orders, instructions and other documents readily accessible', Foreword). Kazan gifted this viewfinder, a device used to view shots through multiple camera formats, focal lengths, and aspect ratios within a specific range, to celebrated cinematographer Robert Surtees after their collaboration on The Arrangement.Director viewfinders of this style were often referred to as "Tewe" based on the German manufacturing company that designed them. This metal director's viewfinder originated from Surtees' personal collection. It is engraved "Elia Kazan" with a metal lanyard secured with orange rubber around the clasps and tape strips featuring handwritten numbers. The viewfinder exhibits tape residue and scuffs.
