Henty (G.A.). Rujub, the Juggler, 3 vols., 1st ed., [1893], half titles, 32pp. adverts. at end of vol. III dated October 1892, but lacking all titles, occasional spotting, previous owner inscriptions to half titles, two hinges cracking, original blue cloth with lavish floral design, joints and edges rubbed, slight lean, 8vo. Although lacking the title pages, this is a scarce set of one of Henty’s eleven adult novels and one of the last “triple-deckers” to be issued in England. By the mid 1890s the ‘triple-decker’ was effectively replaced by the single volume novel, at the demand of the buying public who wanted more books at cheaper prices! (3)

Author’s presentation copy, inscribed to vol. I: ‘Willie Morris from his old friend Bram Stoker with affectionate rememberance, 19.7.09’. Bram Stoker was Henry Irving’s manager from 1878 to 1905, and Irving’s son, Henry Brodribb Irving, was at Oxford between 1888 and 1891 and appeared in several Oxford University Dramatic Society productions with William John Morris, and it may be during this period that Stoker became acquainted with Morris. Havell and Co., c. 1825, hand-coloured aquatint cut-out arched viewing frame, and eighteen hand-coloured aquantint cards with grey-wash border to head and foot, numbered 1-18, each 20 x 13.5 cm, loosely contained within orig. morocco-backed cardboard box, with hand-coloured aquatint illust. to upper cover (some discolouration and wear to edges), with publisher’s printed label mounted to verso of upper cover, 8vo. Not in Abbey. A rare moveable pictorial and instructive game, allowing the user to compose a variety of pictureseque views, enhanced perspectivally with the aid of the viewing frame showing the poet Pope in his grotto. An Elegant and Amusing Companion for the Drawing Room Table, and Forming a Pleasing Series of Highly Coloured Heads, for Young Ladies to Copy From... from the Original Drawings by a Lady, Simpkin, Marshall, c.1837, seven cardboard leaves, the first with a hand-col. eng. of a head-and-shoulders portrait of a woman, the other six each with a different hand-col. eng. of a costume, hair arrangement, and hat or headdress, with a cut-away area for the face, somewhat dusty and finger-soiled, each approx. 132 x 119 mm (5.25 x 4.75 ins), loosely contained as issued in orig. blue-grey card wrappers, inside wrappers with title and ads. respectively, upper cover with hand-col. eng. label mounted on front, rubbed and soiled, ribbon tie renewed. Rare. The six leaves are designed to be placed one at a time on top of the portrait on the first leaf (The Lady at Home), and are titled: The Lady at the Opera; The Lady in the Costume of Anne Boleyn; The Lady in the Costume of Diana Vernon; The Lady in the Costume of Fielding’s Amelia; The Lady in the Costume of Byron’s Medora; and The Lady in the Costume of a Country Girl. The approximate date of publication is based on the publisher’s advertisement appearing on the rear pastedown of the card wrappers, for a new ed. of The Little Villager’s Verse Book by the Rev. W.L. Bowles (‘shortly to be published’) which was issued in 1837. (1)

* Domino playing cards. A pack of domino playing cards, French, early 19th c., thirty hand-col. eng. cards (complete), comprising twenty-six pictorial cards, each with domino symbol in the centre, and two continuous strip images (top and bottom, facing each other), that conjoin when dominoes matched to form a domestic panorama, plus four additional cards, each with caricature face in centre, and with slotted corners, generally dust-soiled, 96 x 63 mm (3.75 x 2.5 ins), contained in later cardboard box. Rare. Including images of a magician, stilt walkers, soldiers, street sellers, a pickpocket, a corpse hanging from a gibbet, a duel, children’s games, musicians, puppeteers, etc. (1) Amendment: There are 31 hand-col eng. cards (rather than 30 as described) and so there is one card missing (the double nought).

A deck of playing cards, c.1837, fifty-two wood eng. cards, with stencilled colours, comprising four suits of thirteen (standard English pattern), each with pip cards 1-10 and three full-length court cards, “one shilling” on duty ace, cerise versos, with “V R” and the Queen’s arms in gilt (probably produced to commemorate Queen Victoria’s coronation), 92 x 64 mm (3.5 x 2.5 ins), together with a Goodall & Son Ltd. deck of cards, c.1901, complete, with English monarchs on court cards, and versos with portrait of Queen Victoria with the dates of her reign, and a De La Rue deck commemorating Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee, complete, contained in remains of orig. box (3)
