PRINCE WILLIAM FREDERICK: (1776-1834) Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, nephew of King George III. An interesting A.L.S., William Frederick, three pages, 4to, Gloucester House, 21st July 1817, to `My dear Lord` (Viscount Sidmouth). The Duke announces `James Pitfield, a Private in my Regiment, has been sentenced to Death for robbery, and as he is extremely young, & has had an excellent character since he came into the 3rd Guards till he committed the crime of which he has been found guilty, I cannot refrain from transmitting to your Lordship the enclosed statement (no longer present) and application from the Captain of the Company to which he belongs, Lt. Colonel Aitchison.` The Duke continues to add that he has been informed that `there are some favourable points in his case` and asks Sidmouth to consider recommending to the Prince Regent that Pitfield`s punishment by mitigated. In a postscript, signed with his initials W.F., the Duke further stresses his anxiety on the subject and remarks that if Sidmouth requires any further information Aitchison or Sir Archibald Murray, the adjutant of the battalion, who `are at present in the Tower and are prepared to state every circumstance relating to this unfortunate man`. Some extremely light, very minor age wear, VG Viscount Sidmouth (1757-1844) British Statesman, Prime Minister 1801-04, Home Secretary 1812-22. James Pitfield (1796-1851) British Soldier, Convict and Stonemason. Pitfield listed in the musters of the 3rd Foot Guards in 1812 and it is possible that he fought at the Battle of Waterloo where five of his fellow soldiers were reported as having been killed on 18th June 1815. In May 1817 Pitfield was arrested for burglary in London and was detained at Bridewell prison before being transferred to Newgate prison on 26th June 1817. On the 4th July he was tried at the Old Bailey before Mr Justice Parker and was found guilty and sentenced to death. Records show that Viscount Sidmouth replied to the present letter from the Duke of Gloucester on the 22nd July 1817 and assured the Duke that the substance of both his letter and that of Aitchisons would be laid before the Prince Regent in Council when the case of Pitfield was next brought under consideration. It would appear that the Duke`s letter was favourably viewed and on 13th August 1817 Pitfield`s sentence was commuted to be transported for life and in November he was sent to Australia, landing at Hobart on 1st June 1818. Given the police number `36`, Pitfield was employed on Public Works and in 1820 was sentenced to 150 lashes and labour in the Gaol Gang for six months for stealing wheat from a mill. He died on 24th December 1851 at Hobart, aged 58 years, and with his occupation stated as stonemason.

Matthewman, Connaught Rangers, Killed in Action whilst taking cover under an ammunition waggon, 17.10.1854, Crimea 1854-56, one clasp, Alma (Serjt James Matthewman. 88th Regt), officially impressed in serif capitals, pawnbrokers marks to reverse therefore nearly extremely fine Sergeant James Matthewman, served in the Crimea with The Connaught Rangers, on the morning of 17th October 1854 the first bombardment opened upon Sebastopol, and was kept up continuously all day; the Malakhoff Tower was knocked to pieces, and the batteries in front of it were shut up in a few hours. In the afternoon two French magazines exploded, which made their fire slack; in our Right Attack an ammunition waggon was blown up, killing and wounding men; part of the 88th was out as a covering party and had a great many killed and wounded; among the former were a sergeant and two privates, who were, poor fellows, blown to atoms at the explosion of the ammunition waggon under which they had taken refuge as a safe place. Lot 10

A pair of Victorian steel and wooden hafted halberds, circa 1843, each side with a crest and motto, `William Garnett` and `1843` The crest of William Garnett (1782-1863) of Quernmore Park and Bleasdale Tower, JP and Master Forester of Her Majesty`s Forest of Bleasdale, Lancashire. He acquired a lease of the manor or forest of Bleasdale from the Crown and converted wild lands into meadow and pasture. He built Bleasdale Tower, and served as High Sheriff of Lancashire in 1843. His son, William James Garnett (1818-1873), was a British Conservative Party politician and was a Member of Parliament from 1857 to 1864. It is plausible/credible that non-functional halberds would be associated with armorial trumpet banners in the shrieval ceremonial associated with the opening of the Assize Court, for instance. In the case of the first William Garnett this would have been in 1843.

Scotland – the Highland Rebellion 1715 group of approx 15 printed Acts of Parliament 1715 and later dealing with the 1715 Rebellion which sought to put James Francis Edward Stuart ‘The Old Pretender’ otherwise known as ‘James III’ on the Throne. The Acts include those ‘For the more effectual Securing of Peace of the Highlands of Scotland’ ‘To impower His Majesty to secure and detain such persons as His majesty shall suspect are conspiring against his Person and Government’ ‘To indemnify those who have acted in defence of His Majesties Person’ and various Acts specifically targeted against leading Jacobites such as George Earl of Marshal^ James Earl Panmuir^ Thomas Forster^ William Mackintosh^ John Plunket (the famous Jacobite Agent who in later life plotted to seize the Tower of London)^ the Bishop of Rochester and George Kelly – who was imprisoned in the Tower of London and did not escape until 1736 – and several others. The group also contains the General Pardon issued by George II – which on the surface looks to be a general pardoning of anyone who took part in the rebellion^ but on closer scrutiny then goes on to exclude from pardon virtually everyone who took part ! Collectively these Acts provide a fascinating primary source of contemporaneous information on the Rebellion - one of the major events of the 18th c

Lot 1159

John Faed (1820-1902) Kinmont Willie Oil on canvas Signed lower right 97 x 120cm (381/4x 471/4in) Provenance Listed by John Faed as sold in 1865 for £500 to Flatou; Lord Courthope, Whiligh, Wadhurst, East Sussex; thence by descent. Exhibited London, The Royal Academy, 1865, No. 536 as Kinmont Willie, a prisoner. “They band his legs beneath the steed, etc.”, See MacEdward Leach, The Ballad Book for The Ballad of Kinmont Willie, William Armstrong of Kinmont, known as Kinmont Willie, was a notorious Border Reiver during the late 16th century. He has been credited with the taking of some 2000 head of Cattle in one raid. In the spring of 1596, a truce day was held near Kershopefoot. It was attended by 200 riders from each of the English Marches as well the Scots with Kinmont Willie in attendance. The two sides settled outstanding matters and compensation was paid for those robbed. Upon completion of this meeting Kinmont Willie headed for home. He was attacked en route by a party of English riders and imprisoned in Carlisle Castle under the care of the English Deputy Warden Salkeld, much to the satisfaction of Lord Scrope, the English warden. Salkeld happened to be the presiding English Officer at the truce meeting earlier that day. Kinmont Willie’s friend and fellow Borderer, Scott of Buccleuch, was enraged at this capture. The “Bauld Buccleuch,” as he is sometimes known, was just 30 and a most daring and reckless young Scottish chieftain. Of course, he was also a renowned Reiver himself and had plenty of grievance with Lord Scrope. Upon hearing of Willie’s capture, he is supposed to have exclaimed, “Now Christ’s curse upon my head, but avenged of Lord Scrope I’ll be.” Buccleuch at first tried all political means to have Willie released until these were all exhausted. He then decided to take matters into his own hands and release Willie by means of a “commando” style raid, he had the Castle studied and found what seemed to be a weakness at the “Postern gate”. He believed that the guards at this post could be overpowered and the gate taken. Scott and 80 handpicked followers including Harden, Will Elliot, Willie “Red Cloak” Bell, Red Rowan and other assorted members of the Elliot’s, Johnson’s and Irvine’s met at Kinmont Willie’s tower, Morton Castle. Willie’s sons were among them. With the way guarded by scouts, they rode in the moonlight in total silence, crossing the River Esk, and completing the 10 mile journey to Carlisle. In addition to arms, they carried ropes, ladders and grappling irons. The need for silence meant the party moved slowly, not arriving until dawn. They overpowered the castle guards, broke through the postern gate, opened Willie’s cell and rushed him out and to horse. In case of a fight, Scott had left the main part of his cavalcade outside the city gates and had planted the Johnsons and Irvines in ambush ready to head off any pursuit. But speed and brilliant planning had done their work and the raiding party was back on Scottish soil by sunrise. The English were left looking inept and Lord Scrope wrote to London, exaggerating the raiding party’s size up to 500 men. Queen Elizabeth was furious and wrote to James VI of Scotland demanding that Scott of Buccleuch be handed over. But James, who approved of the raid, managed to reply with diplomatic vagueness. Lord Scrope raided repeatedly into Scotland in reprisal while Buccleuch and his comrades raided back just as regularly. The situation got so out of control that the Queen demanded of Edinburgh that Buccleuch turn himself in, which he eventually did. He was held in the Tower of London for six months, until his young son was exchanged for him as a hostage. Some years later, when the Bauld Buccleuch traveled to London and into the Queen’s presence, she demanded of him how he had dared to break into her Carlisle stronghold. Buccleuch is said to have replied, “ What is there a man will not dare?” which seems to have mollified the Queen, because she had a soft spot for such roguish daredevils.
