The 45th [regiment] of Foot were of this escalade of the castle. [In 2012], exactly 200 years to the day, this stone was taken from the castle wall at the point where Lieutenant James Macphearson (sic, MacPherson) mounted his ladder was shot in the chest, the ball hitting a button knocking him unconscious. The siege was one of the bloodiest of the wars and was considered a costly victory by the British, with some 4,800 Allied soldier killed. Enraged at the huge amount of casualties they suffered in seizing the city, the troops broke into houses and stores consuming vast quantities of liquor with many of them then going on a rampage. Threatening their officers and ignoring their commands to desist, and even killing several, the troops massacred about 4,000 Spanish civilians. It took three days before the men were brought back into order.

Boyd & Yule Novr 15th 1797' with maker's mark 'H&T' and hallmarked with George III bust, lion and capital 'F' date letter (used at Newcastle for 1796"). 2.79 grams, 17mm overall, 15.21mm internal diameter (approximate size British I, USA 4 1/4, Europe 7.44, Japan 7) (3/4"). Very fine condition. Property of a gentleman; acquired in the 1970s. See printouts of family tree documents for Edward and Janet and their children; especially for Benjamin who was an important figure in early Australian settlement; see also DNB and ADB entries for Benjamin Boyd. Edward Boyd (1770-1846), born at Merton Hall, Wigtownshire, Scotland, son of Rev. William Boyd, married Janet Yule, eldest daughter of Benjamin Yule (Edinburgh) on 15th November 1797 and he went on to be a London merchant and to hold the office of Deputy Lieutenant there. Their most famous son, Benjamin Boyd (1803-1851), was an entrepreneur and London stockbroker who, having raised capital, travelled to Australia to form the Royal Bank of Australia; Benjamin was a squatter on a large scale (one of the largest in Australia, eventually controlling over 2,000,000 acres in the Monaro and Port Philip districts, raising sheep) and he controversially imported natives from the Pacific Islands as labour (a practice known as 'blackbirding'); as a trader he had three steamers and three sailing ships (as Boyd and Company) and he founded Boydtown, the first settlement on Twofold Bay, in 1843, on the south coast of New South Wales, with a large jetty and a lighthouse (Boyd's Tower); from Boydtown, Benjamin had nine whaling ships operating and he sat in the New South Wales Legislature. The town was deserted in the 1840s, after Boyd's finances collapsed but the area is now flourishing again, mostly for housing and tourism; Boyd left Australia in 1848 in an attempt to recoup his fortune in the California goldfields and, in 1851, sailing on his yacht 'Wanderer', he disappeared at Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands) after going ashore to hunt ducks; his body was never found. The Ben Boyd National Park in New South Wales was named after him in 1971. The other sons of Edward and Janet include William Sprott Boyd (1799-1844, Resident at Court of Boroda and Political Commisioner for HIEC at Gujerat), Mark Boyd (1805-1879, banker and involved with Benjamin in Australian land deals), John Christian Curwen Boyd (1811-1882, served in the British Embassy, Florence), Edward Lennox Boyd (1819-1905, of Burham Priory) and James Boyd (1819-1852, travelled to Austrlia and New Zealand, where he married); there were also daughters named Marion, Mary, Jane and Janet.

SECOND WORLD WAR - AN OAK COMMEMORATIVE CIGAR BOX SUBMARINE X2 the lid bearing a heavy 16.5cm brass relief profile of Italian Submarine 'Galileo Galilei', re-named 'X2', 22cm x 14cm x 9cm. Note: H.M. Submarine X2 was an Italian Archimede-class submarine, originally named Galileo Galilei. She served in the Regia Marina before and during World War II, before her capture by the Royal Navy in 1940. Galileo Galilei was stationed in the Red Sea in June 1940 as a unit of the Italian Red Sea Flotilla, and during a patrol, with Capitano di Corvetta Corrado Nardi in command, on 16 June 1940, she sank the Norwegian tanker James Stove approximately 12 miles south of Aden. On 18 June, the Galilei halted with cannon fire the Yugoslavian cargo ship Drava, but as Yugoslavia was not yet at war, she let it proceed, the attack was heard by the anti-submarine warfare trawler HMS Moonstone and at 4:30pm Moonstone sighted the periscope of Galileo Galilei and carried out an attack with two depth charges, though without damaging the submarine, the following day, after the British warship repeated its attack with depth charges, Nardi gave the order to surface and engaged the Moonstone with her guns. Right at the start of the action between the two vessels, the forward gun's sighting mechanism on the Galilei became unusable, the fast-moving Moonstone scored the first hit on the Italian boat after ten minutes, killing some men and wounding Nardi, the following hit killed the crew of the forward gun, including the First Officer, the submarine's gun jammed, and then another salvo from Moonstone killed all those on the conning tower including Nardi. Under the only officer left alive, though wounded, the young midshipman Mazzucchi, the Galilei continued the fight with the forward gun. However the British destroyer HMS Kandahar arrived, and Galilei surrendered. The submarine had lost 16 men; Nardi, four other officers, seven NCOs and four sailors. The submarine was then towed into Aden. Though the British side claimed that the submarine's codebooks and operational documents were captured intact by the Royal Navy, and revealed the exact position of other Italian naval units, Italian survivors (including Midshipman Mazzucchi) reported that every document was destroyed before surrender, and that no written operational orders were issued to Italian units, only an oral briefing between captains and the submarine command in Massawa before every mission After her capture, Galileo Galilei was berthed at Port Said and served as a generating station to charge the batteries of British submarines. She was commissioned into the Royal Navy in June 1942 as HMS X2 and was scrapped on 1 January 1946.

Recipe: take a good 3-litre Bentley chassis, mix in a good 4.5-litre engine, gearbox and transmission and add a light body with accessories to taste. The result is a motor car which, while still retaining a good vintage flavour, possesses a performance equaled by few other machines even of the most modern and expensive type' (Captain J.G. Fry, The Autocar May 14th 1943). A late Bentley 3 Litre, chassis HT1649 was initially fitted with Vanden Plas saloon coachwork and supplied new to J. Henderson Esq. Road registered as `WW 6726' by West Yorkshire County Council on 15th June 1928, an accompanying continuation buff logbook shows that it survived World War Two and was resident in Essex some twenty-six years later. Belonging to Ronald Frederick Fotheringham at the time, the Bentley is known to have passed through the hands of Kenneth Aubrey Cleave, Peter James Warren, Jack Ernest Durler, John William Bache Esq., Fred Zimmer and Ed Hubbard before entering the current ownership via Neil Davies Historic Racing in 1999. Converted into a Tourer during 1963 and reconfigured to 3/4.5 Litre specification using its original `matching numbers' engine crankcase during the 1990s, `WW 6726' was nonetheless treated to an extensive `chassis up' restoration by the vendor. A long term Bentley Drivers' Club member, he sought to create a car that was - in his own terms - as usable and enjoyable as possible. Resembling one of the nine short wheelbase (9ft 9.5in) cars that W.O. Bentley created before adopting the longer wheelbase (10ft 10in) for series 4.5 Litre production, chassis HT1649 also sports a 4.5 Litre-type radiator for improved cooling and 4.5 Litre steering box for easier manoeuvring. A veteran of numerous rallies and tours around the world, `WW 6726' has been developed with performance and reliability in mind. As such, it sports a full-flow oil filter, coil ignition, overdrive, electric fuel pumps and more modern SU HD8 carburettors. Though, the Autovac has been left in situ on the bulkhead should a new owner wish to reinstate it. Pleasingly retaining its original crankcase and magneto tower stampings, the uprated 4.5 Litre engine has not long been treated to a `Blower'-type block sourced from LMB Racing. The four-speed `C-type' manual gearbox is allied to a modern clutch, while the four-wheel drum brakes have been converted to hydraulic operation. Finished in Black with Dark Green leather upholstery, the four-seater rides on 20-inch wire wheels and utilises a 3.53:1 rear axle ratio. The chassis number HT1649 is visible on a lozenge inside the nearside front dumb iron and on the front engine cross member. With its quick-release radiator filler cap, Le Mans-style fuel tank, fold flat windscreen (complete with aero screens), nearside-mounted spare wheel and cycle mudguards, the Bentley does not want for visual drama. An old FIVA Identity Card which accompanies the 3/4.5 Litre states the following: 'The chassis, gearbox and suspension are as original. The wheels have been reduced one inch in diameter to 20 inches and the brakes have been converted to hydraulic operation. The engine retains its original numbered crankcase but has been enlarged to 4398cc. Coil ignition replaces the original magnetos and electric pumps replace the autovac. The radiator is from a 4.5 Litre Bentley of the same period'. Among the most handsome and best sorted Bentley 3/4.5 Litres that we have had the pleasure of offering, `WW 6726' is accompanied by a continuation buff logbook, V5C Registration Document, expired FIA Historic Vehicle Identity Form, old FIA Identity Card and numerous invoices from the likes of Jack Barclay, NDR, VBE Restorations, D.H. Day, John Ambler & Son, William Medcalf and FS Racing etc.
