An excellent Chimu-Inca zoomorphic vessel from Peru, ca. 1400 - 1500 AD. This large bottle features a nicely detailed monkey draped over the top of the chamber. The head has expressive facial features, with the legs and tail molded in relief. The piece is intact and covered inside and out with strong mineral deposits and trails. Height: 8.5 in.

Voyage Historique de l'Amerique Meridionale...et...une Histoire des Yncas du Perou, 2 vol., first edition in French, engraved frontispieces, titles in red and black with engraved vignette, engraved head-pieces and 51 plates & maps only (of 53, lacking plates XIX/XX on one sheet and plate XXXVII but with large plate XXI of Quito on 3 conjoined sheets), plates numbered I-XLVI plus 8 unnumbered plates of the Inca civilisation, many folding, some folding plates in vol.2 browned, otherwise a good clean copy, contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt with red morocco labels, rubbed and scuffed, corners and spine ends a little worn, [Sabin 36812], 4to, Amsterdam & Leipzig, Arkste'e & Merkus, 1752.⁂ Including the earliest recorded reference to the "Aurora Australis".

Joseph) The Present State of Peru, first edition, 20 hand-coloured stipple-engraved plates, tissue guards, lacking dedication leaf, text foxed and browned, plates very lightly browned, contemporary half diced russia, uncut, rubbed, joitns rubbed, rebacked preserving old gilt spine, corners repaired, [Abbey, Travel 723; Colas 2751; Sabin 81615], 4to, R.Phillips, 1805.⁂ Including depictions of the Inca King and Queen, other tribal figures, inhabitants of Lima, llamas, a bull-fighter and a Peruvian giant.
Inca, 14th-15th century AD. A child's cap, possibly from a Qhapaq hucha sacrifice, made from woven wool with bands of dark brown wool running horizontally; numerous tassels to the bottom of the cap with feathers from exotic birds; to the top a tassel with feather from exotic bird. KRISHNA SHAMRAO KULKARNI (INDIAN 1916-1994) WOMAN IN RED SARI Signed with initials, gouache 79cm x 51cm (31in x 20in) Note: Kulkarni trained at the Sir J.J. School of Art, Bombay. From there he had a busy career, working, exhibiting and teaching. He was a visiting Professor at the Delhi Polytechnic Art Department from 1945 to 1962, and during that time, also founded the Triveni Kala Sangam, where he ultimately served as Director of the Art Department until 1968. In the late 1950s he travelled extensively through Mexico, Guatemala, Peru and Brazil. The contact he had there with Mayan and Inca civilizations became an important influence on his later work. He exhibited work internationally in locations as diverse as London, Paris, Venice, New York, Tokyo and Sao Paulo, as well as representing India at the International Art Programme in the U.S.A. on three separate occasions.
