1982 Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible PLEASE NOTE: The cherished registration number visible in the photos - '7R' - does not form part of the sale. However, it is available to purchase by separate negotiation.PLEASE NOTE: This lot possesses a MOT certificate valid until 24th November 2017. - One owner from new and less than 11,000 recorded milesRolls-Royce registered the Corniche name in the 1930s and apparently assigned it to a prototype based on the Bentley MKV, but the model was never progressed due to the onset of World War Two. The moniker was finally first employed in 1971 on the Coupe and Convertible versions of the Silver Shadow. In common with the Shadow, the newcomer was penned by in-house designer John Polwhele Blatchley and the underbody and floorpan crafted by Pressed Steel Fisher. Initial assembly (including alloy bonnet, bootlid and doors) was thereafter entrusted to Mulliner Park Ward of Willesden, London - by then a wholly-owned division of Rolls-Royce. At this stage the cars were transported to the main factory in Crewe for the installation of the running gear before returning to London for the trimming, painting and finishing. Power was provided by the company's venerable 6.75-litre V8, whose origins could be traced back to the 1950s. This was mated to a GM Turbo Hydramatic 400 three-speed automatic transmission. Suspension was independent by coil springs all round, augmented by a Citroen-originated hydraulic self-levelling system. Braking was by discs, with ventilated units being phased in for 1972. Introduced some five years later, the Series II version of the Corniche gained the same rack and pinion steering and improved front suspension geometry as its Silver Shadow II sibling. Further improved in 1979 / 1980, the coachbuilt cars adopted mineral oil for their hydraulic systems and a modified rear suspension set-up that presaged the one that the Silver Spirit would later adopt. The vast majority of the 2,006 Series II Corniche Convertibles sold between 1977 and 1987 were to left-hand drive specification.Offered for sale with clear title by order of the High Court, this particular example has formed part of an extensive London-based private collection since it was first UK registered on 4th January 1982. Finished in Caf£ au Lait over Ivory with Sandalwood leather upholstery and a Fawn hood, the Rolls-Royce's chassis number - DRH0050699 - is consistent with a 1980 build date. An HPi check reveals that (a) the Corniche Convertible has had no former keepers and (b) it is not recorded on their stolen, finance, security watch or insurance write off databases. While a UK Government Vehicle MOT History search shows that the four-seater soft-top has seemingly covered less than 1,000 miles over the past decade. MOT tested on 31st May 2006 at an indicated 9,737 miles, its odometer has yet to read 10,600 miles. The overall condition of the Rolls-Royce is consistent with a low mileage vehicle and given the minimal distances covered by its stablemates, we feel there is a good chance that this very stylish Corniche Convertible has covered less than 11,000 miles from new. Offered for sale with sundry old MOTs and service records dating back to 2000 (8,244 miles) and 2002 (8,438 miles) respectively, chassis number DRH0050699 comes with its original handbook, guarantee letter. It is hoped that this apparently very low mileage, one owner motor car will possess a fresh MOT certificate by the time of sale. A shagreen cased vintage geometry set, an ivory hydrometer 'Gammage Late Dicas Patented Liverpool', a white metal spectacles case, a plated travelling egg cup and a white metal cigarette case with geometric inlaid top, inscribed to the interior '22nd.3.40'. CONDITION REPORT The Hydrometer rule is discoloured and has general wear and tear commensurate with age. No inscribed symbols/initials. Ivory sector has no visible maker's marks. Possibly lacking metal hinge. Some discolouration, chipping and cracking to this piece.

A rare yellow diamond, enamel and yellow gold ring, last quarter 17th century The cushion-shaped old brilliant-cut yellow diamond weighs 3.16 carats and is set within the raised box bezel with engrailed edges above arcading filled with stylised acanthus enamelled white with black details, each shoulder chased with an auricular scroll, formerly enamelled, to the plain hoop, the interior of the plain closed back setting lined with black pitch to heighten the golden tint of the stone. Probably English. Accompanied by report number 2175692368 dated 21st June 2016 from GIA, New York stating that the round-cornered square modified brilliant cut diamond weighs 3.16cts, is a natural, even fancy deep brownish yellow colour with SI2 clarity with strong yellow fluorescence. COMMENTARY BY DIANA SCARISBRICK This fine and rare ring set with a brilliant-cut diamond marks a milestone in gemmological history, resulting from the discovery of the laws of refraction and analytical geometry during the second half of the seventeenth century. Until 1664, when the earliest brilliant-cut diamond, the Wittelsbach, is recorded, diamonds were cut as either point, table or rose-cuts№. This new multi-faceted technique of cutting released so much more fire and light that Robert de Berquen, in Les Merveilles des Indes Orientales (Paris 1669), compared it with "the sun, shining out amongst all other stones". At the same time, the supply of Golconda diamonds from India increased substantially, encouraged principally by the desire of Louis XIV to make his court at Versailles the most splendid in Europe. Across the Channel, by 1695, London had emerged as the centre of the European trade in diamonds due to the gemmological and financial skills of the resident Portuguese Jewish experts. In addition, as far as cutting and polishing were concerned, although the Dutch lapidaries excelled at rose-cut diamonds, the London workshops were acknowledged as the masters of the new brilliant-cut. It is highly significant that the 410 carat Pitt Diamond acquired by the Regent of France was brilliant-cut by Joseph Cope in London 1704-1706. This superiority is confirmed by the auction catalogue of the precious stones of the Chevalier de la Rocque (1745): "celle de l'Angleterre est plus reguliиre, plus nette et plus vive: et par consequйnt plus estimйe" (English cutting is more regular, more precise and more lively and therefore of higher value)І. These words could equally well be applied to this impeccable ring with its wonderful play of light. During this period, before the discovery of the mines in Brazil in 1727, stones of this size were rare and as in most cases jewellers had to make the best of small stones grouped together in clusters, the survival of a solitaire is exceptional. Not only is the faceting apparently English, but also the setting, which differs from late 17th century French mounts which are more elaborately decorated and richly enamelledі. Furthermore, the simplified design in this example accords with the change of fashion, marking the turn of the century towards minimally enamelled and less massive settings; thus, not detracting from the splendour of the gem but showing it off to best advantage. Since grander social events were now taking place at night due to improvement in candle lighting, the effect of this diamond displayed on the finger of a high ranking lady or gentleman would have been extraordinary, eclipsing all other stones. © DIANA SCARISBRICK: August 2016 1.
