GWR wood cased Galvanometer in original, leather case. The meter is approximately 4" tall and 3½" wide with a silvered dial and brass, knurled connectors, switch and carry handle on the top. The glass is missing and there is an aged split in the wood. Marked twice with company initials, the leather case is inscribed once.

Philadelphia, early 20th century The substantial oblong iron case enclosing a rectangular coil applied with a small circular mirror and suspended via wires around a magnet, behind cast brass glazed cover inscribed in relief LEEDS & NORTHRUP CO. SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS PHILADELPHIA 67690, mounted onto mahogany panel with three electrical connection posts to front and trade label to underside, with cast iron triform stand on adjustable feet, 46cm high; with a reflecting galvanometer scale with translucent paper scale calibrated from 320-0-320 mounted within glazed mahogany surround and supported via sliding collars on two cylindrical uprights, the rectangular base applied with maker`s nameplate NADLER BRO`s & Co., Westminster and ivorine retailer`s plaque for PHILIP HARRIS & Co. Ltd and with light tube applied to a black painted metal shade to one side (light focussing lens and lamp lacking), 61cm wide. Provenance: Private collection Gloucestershire. The mirror galvanometer was devised in order to obtain the most accurate readings possible. By using reflected light against a separate scale to indicate deflection, errors that may come about due to the deflection having to operate a pointer with mass (albeit compensated) can be eradicated.

Scientific interest: a wooden cased galvanometer by H Tinsley & co, Cambridge Instrument Co Thermometer, oak cased Jundes scientific instrument with winder, a Wright`s Patent Demand Indicator (metal case) plus two McElroy electrical shock instruments in mahogany cases plus a black Marconiphone personal radio.

Three Ohmmeters (all 500 volts), No. 15A, 15B and No. 18A with galvanometer 41B Mark II, (4).

A WHEATSTONE BRIDGE, MODEL IA. in varnished light wood case with ebonite control panel, seven black dials and lacquered brass terminals, 69 x 29cm, fitted wood box; a mirror galvanometer by Philip Harris Ltd, in lacquered brass housing on iron base with three brass leveling feet, No 17018; a Post Office resistance box with brass terminals and twenty three ebonite taps, in mahogany case with recessed carrying handle; another, all but the last early 20th c (4). ++ All in very good condition, the Wheatstone bridge possibly never used

GWR mahogany cased Galvanometer. Standing 7¼" high, the dome shaped case houses a silvered dial instrument with a single needle able to move left or right. Inscribed with the word "Silvertown", this instrument is purported to originate from Bath Signal Box on the main Bristol Paddington route. The case is stamped `GWR` on the front base. Excellent condition.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, Professor Jacques-Arsène d’Arsonval (1851-1940), large complimentary Bronze Medal, “Son Jubilé”, 1933, by Paul-Marcel Damann (1855-1939), bust of d’Arsonval left, rev naked female slays monstrous snakes, 118mm. Extremely fine, rare. Arsonval, physicist and physician, worked under Claude Bernard and C E Brown-Séquard (whom he succeeded in 1897 at the Collège de France) and was professor at the Sorbonne from 1894 to 1932. He gave his name to the D'Arsonval galvanometer, and as a pioneer in electrotherapy, he studied the medical application of high-frequency currents. He was also involved in the industrial application of electricity. Whilst the obverse of the medal is completely traditional, the reverse is a powerful Art Deco image and one of Damann’s most memorable works.
