A Telegraph Siphon Recorder By Muirhead & Co. Ltd, Westminster, by Muirhead & Co. Ltd, Westminster, numbered 32155, circa 1880, ebonised mahogany base with speed control to side for Froment electric motor, drawer to front containing paper reel, large electromagnetic detector above with ink reservoir, electrical connections to rear, ebonised & glazed mahogany cover with hinged access doors to cover, 33cm height, 34cm wideNote: The ‘Siphon Recorder ‘was originally invented in 1867 by Lord Kelvin. It was initially designed for use with the new trans-atlantic cables laid in 1865. These cables were over 4000 miles in length so instruments of unparalleled sensitivity were required to decode messages. The ‘Siphon Recorder’ was designed specifically for this use.The design is based on a moving coil galvanometer with a powerful electromagnet, but this suspension is too delicate to carry a pen. The pen, which is a fine glass capillary with one end dipping in a reservoir of ink, is mounted on a separate suspension at the front and coupled to the moving coil by silk threads. A vibrator on this suspension keeps the pen moving to overcome static friction. A beautifully built Froment ‘Mouse Mill’ electric bipolar motor then pulls the paper tape through at the required speed. The whole instrument is housed under a lift-off black lacquered mahogany cover. The cover has two opening sections allowing access to the inner workings. A drawer at the front houses the large reel of paper.
