Feliks Topolski (Polish, 1907-1989) LONDON UNDER NIGHT BOMBARDMENT; DOCKLAND SHELTER Signed l.r., oil on canvas 71 x 91cm. With City of Bradford Corporation Art Gallery, 1944, label and Friends of the National Collections of Ireland Loan Exhibition of Continental Paintings, Dublin, 1944. A similiar drawing appears in Topolski`s book `Britain in Peace and War` Methuen & Co, 1946 with a foreword by James Laver. The title of the picture is `The Warehouse Shelter in Commercial Road, East End, September,1940`. It probably would have been taken from a series of drawings he did around the time of the Blitz in London, as an official War Artist. It is illustrated in Topolski`s `88 Pictures`, Methuen, 1951 and has the title of `London under night bombardment; Dockland Shelter`. Topolski was a painter, draughtsman, and illustrator, born in Poland. He studied at Warsaw, Italy and Paris, and moved to England in 1935. From 1940 to 1945 he was an official war artist, and became a British citizen in 1947. We would like to thank Daniel and Teresa Topolski for helping catalogue this picture.
