George Blacklock Abraxas, 2021 Acrylic on Paper Signed on front and verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) George Blacklock (b1952) was born in County Durham, England and studied at Sunderland Polytechnic for one year before going on to study painting at Stourbridge College of Art in the early seventies. He graduated from his Masters at Reading University in 1976. George has exhibited extensively in Europe and North America throughout his career and has been represented by Flowers since 1996. He has received awards from the Welsh Arts Council, the Greater London Arts Association and was a prize winner at the John Moores contemporary painting competition in the nineties. George Blacklock has work in major public collections including the Arts Council of Great Britain. The British painter has also been the Dean of Chelsea College of Art and Design, London since 2011. "A lot of my paintings have shapes and gestures that converse, or are compromised, or can be seen to co-exist, or dominate, or retreat, or expand, or to re-iterate, in other words exist in a visual narrative. This narrative is complex both in formal terms and in its associations and metaphors. I often equate my abstract forms to the metaphysical realms of religious art. I value 'touch' as an expressive function of painting as well as a major contribution to non-linguistic, non-linear narrative." Despite the abstract output of the artist's work, Blacklock doesn't see himself completely as an abstract painter. By looking closely at the curvilinear shapes that dominate his paintings, we could almost interpret these as narratives for the complex relationships that exist in his main source of inspiration: life. Not only a painter but a musician and art teacher too, George Blacklock finds his inspiration in various fields such as music, religion or simply in the observation of his peers from the Renaissance to Willem de Kooning. In 2015 Colour and Abstraction was published, in which Blacklock has comprehensively described his methods and reasoning, relating his work to the tradition of abstract painting. In 2016 George Blacklock collaborated with Gary Oldman on a two-person exhibition of paintings and photographs, exploring the mutual creative threads connecting their distinct artistic practices, following on from their joint exhibition at the Museo De Las Artes, Guadalajara.

Three leaves from a finely illuminated English Sacramentary, Use of Sarum, in Latin, decorated manuscript on parchment [England, c. 1220] Three single leaves, each with at least one single slender gold initial with coloured penwork picking out acanthus leaves in its infill and surround, smaller initial variegated in red and green with similar penwork, or simple red or green with contrasting penwork (some with baubles mounted within the thinnest parts of their strokes), red rubrics, important text ruled through in red, capitals touched in red, single column of 16 lines of a formal and visually appealing English early gothic hand, written above top line, one leaf (that numbered 'I') cut down at margins (most notable at top and inner with losses to edges of initials there), small flaking from gold in places, some cockling and small spots and stains, else good condition and on fine and supple parchment, complete leaves: 330 by 220mm., the cut down leaf: 300 by 200mm. Provenance:1. Written, decorated and finely illuminated in England in the early thirteenth century, doubtless for an important individual or ecclesiastical institution.2. Apparently already fragmentary by the early twentieth century: these three leaves most probably in a German collection together at that date (acquired in two batches in Germany over a decade apart, but with 'I', 'II' and 'III' at their upper outer corners in single hand of that date). Two further leaves appeared in Quaritch, cat. 1147, Bookhands of the Middle Ages V (1991), no. 55 (one marked up 'IV' in same hand: see photograph there).3. First two leaves here acquired in German trade in 2007 (leaves numbered 'II' and 'III'), the third in Hargesheimer Kunstauktionen, Düsseldorf, 19 September 2018, lot 2855 (numbered 'I'). Text:From an opulent Sarum Sacramentary, the precursor to the expanded Missal. These leaves containing Votive Masses from the Common of Saints followed by Votive Masses for the days of the week. Those in Quaritch were identified as probably for the week of Ash Wednesday, and the present leaves include part of masses for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and prayers for the Common of the Vigil of Many Martyrs, a Confessor, Many Confessors, and for Many Virgins. Only one Sarum Sacramentary was recorded by W.H. Frere (also thirteenth-century and modified for Exeter: Dean and Chapter Library, Exeter, MS 3510: see Bibliotheca Musico-Liturgica: A Descriptive Hand List of the Musical and Latin-Liturgical MSS., 1932, II:12, no. 597).
Leaf from a gargantuan copy of Petrus Comestor, Historia Scholastica, in Latin, decorated manuscript on parchment [Switzerland (perhaps Gams), or Germany, fourteenth century] Single very large leaf, with double column of 30 lines in a tall gothic bookhand (with text for I Maccabees 1, on Alexander the Great and Ptolomy I Sotor), with notable lateral compression, capitals touched in red, bright red rubrics, running titles in red or blue capitals at head of each page, three initials in red or blue with ornate contrasting penwork decoration, this reaching far into margins, prickings for lines visible at outer edge and thus leaf not cut down, some folds with these causing discolouration on verso, a few small holes, somewhat cockled overall, spots and stains, else in fair and presentable condition with wide and clean margins, 435 by 338mm. Provenance:1. The parent codex was most probably written for lectern reading in an ecclesiastical centre, in the fourteenth century. Inscriptions on its verso record that it was reused in 1567 as the binding of a 'Registrum frumentorum', an account of revenues (lit. 'of wheat'), for an Antonius Freissen, who is named as a 'Canonico Commissenis(?)', perhaps indicating Comesianorum conventus, a name recorded for Gams, Switzerland.2. This leaf acquired from a European private collector in 2018. Text:Petrus Comestor (d. 1178) studied at Troyes Cathedral School, where he may have come into contact with the grand scholar Peter Abelard, before travelling to Paris to study there under the celebrated theologian, Peter Lombard. He returned to Troyes as its dean in 1147 and served as the chancellor of Notre Dame from 1168. His teaching was acclaimed in his own time, and his Historia Scholastica carried on his fame after his death. It is a study of early Biblical history from the Creation to the Ascension, supplementing the narrative of the Bible with the works of Church Fathers and other sources. It was completed by 1173.

Walter Richard Sickert A.R.A. (British, 1860-1942)Rue de la Boucherie with St Jacques signed, inscribed and dated 'To Dot Middleton/W. Sickert - 1900' (lower left); further inscribed 'Dieppe' (lower right)oil on canvas45.5 x 56 cm. (18 x 22 in.)Footnotes:ProvenanceThe Artist, by whom gifted to Dorothy (Dot) Middleton, thence by family descentPrivate Collection, U.K.This previously unpublished Sickert oil dating from 1900, depicting Rue de la Boucherie with St Jacques in Dieppe, is one of eight known similar compositions the artist painted in oils between 1900 and circa 1907. It relates most closely to the circa 1902 canvas bearing the same title, which was exhibited at Pallant House Gallery's Sickert in Dieppe exhibition during 2015 (cat.no.37). These two versions are the only ones without the young trees included in the foreground, which prior to this newly discovered painting Wendy Baron suggested was 'circumstantial evidence' of the early date for the known oil. The present lot is rare in that it is dated by Sickert and therefore proves Baron's supposition is correct. Inscribed 'To Dot Middleton' (lower left) this picture can safely be assumed as the first example from the series. The oil on panel which belonged to the Dean of York was bequeathed to York Art Gallery in 1963.The motivation for Sickert leaving London and settling permanently in Dieppe during 1898 was the painful separation from his wife, Ellen. Letters from the artist at the time suggest it also invigorated his creativity and presented ample opportunity to explore new subject matter; by which he meant landscapes as opposed to predominantly portraiture. Between 1898 and 1905 Sickert obsessively recorded the town, both its landmarks as well as the ordinary streets. The Gothic structure of St Jacques received much attention, with a fine example dating from circa 1899-1900 now in the collection of Whitworth Art Gallery, University of Manchester. Although, as Katy Norris remarks in her Pallant House Gallery catalogue, 'He also represented the colourful little houses on the Rue de la Boucherie behind an open space, which is bordered on the left by the north elevation of St Jacques.' (Katy Norris, Sickert in Dieppe, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester, 2015, p.53).The same year as Sickert painted Rue de la Boucherie with St Jacques (1900), a solo exhibition of his work was presented at the legendry Parisian dealer, Durand-Ruel's gallery in Auteuil, alongside an exhibition of Monet's Water-Lilies series. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Pack volunteered to carry an important dispatch into Nieuwpoort and had much difficulty in escaping when the French invested it. Later he was engaged at Boxtel and in the winter retreat to Bremen. Following that retreat the 14th squadron was transferred to the 8th light dragoons after being attached to it. When Pack came home he obtained his lieutenancy in the 14th on 12 March 1795. He commanded a small party of dragoons in the Quiberon expedition^ and in this period did duty for some months as a field-officer on Isle Dieu. He received his troop in the 5th dragoon guards on 27 February 1796^ and while serving with them in Ireland in 1798 he led a patrol near Prosperous against a party of rebels^ who lost twenty men and eight horses.¦¦Pack commanded the escort which conducted General Humbert and other French officers to Dublin after their surrender at Ballinamuck. He then commanded the light troops of the army in two successful actions against the enemy and in Whitelocke~s disastrous attack on Buenos Aires^ in which he received three wounds.¦¦In 1808 the 71st was ordered to Portugal^ and he commanded it at the battles of Roliça and Vimeiro. He marched with Sir John Moore~s army into Spain and in the retreat to Corunna. After returning to England he took part in the Walcheren expedition in 1809^ in which he bravely stormed one of the enemy~s batteries during the siege of Flushing. He became aide-de-camp to the king with the rank of colonel on 25 July 1810. He was then appointed with local rank to a Portuguese brigade under Marshal Beresford and commanded it at Busaco in 1810^ and in front of Almeida in May 1811. When the French garrison escaped Pack pursued them to Barba del Puerco^ and upon orders of Sir Brent Spencer blew up the defences of Almeida. At the capture of Ciudad Rodrigo^ Pack^ who had been appointed a British brigadier-general^ led his Portuguese brigade to make a feint attack on the outwork of the Santiago gate^ which was converted into a real attack.¦¦Pack distinguished himself at the battle of Salamanca and was honourably mentioned for his services in the operations against Burgos. He became a major-general on 4 June 1813 and was present with his brigade at Vitoria. Wellington placed him in temporary command of the 6th division in the Pyrenées^ and he was wounded again at Soraven. He commanded a division at the battles of Nivelle^ the Nive^ Orthez^ and Toulouse^ where he received yet another wound and was honourably mentioned.
