Alfred Wallis (1855-1942) Three yachts passing a lighthouse and dolphins (and Ship with five crew entering harbour with two lighthouses, verso) (double sided) Both signed, pencil and crayon on paper, 25.5cm by 36.5cm It is believed that Wallis started to paint `for company` following the death of his wife, Susan, in 1922. Born into poverty he taught himself to draw and paint from memory on whatever surface he could find and sometimes using old boat paint he would depict mostly his knowledge of St. Ives and life at sea. The artists Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood first saw Wallis` work in 1928 when he had been painting for just a few years. In 1943 Ben Nicholson said ``using the materials nearest to hand is the motive and method of the first creative artist. Certainly his vision is a remarkable thing with an intensity and depth of experience which makes it much more than merely child-like``. Wallis died in 1942, having spent the last few years of his life in the workhouse in Madron but living as a celebrity with his work exhibited in London. see illustration
