ALLAN GWYNNE JONES CBE DSO RA (1892-1982) oil on board - figure with Corgi dogs in a landscape garden with trees, entitled verso 'Study for an alternative painting titled HRH When Princess Elizabeth Driving Her Pony phaeton in Windsor Park (about 1942-43)', 22 x 33cms (framed and glazed) Provenance: photocopied provenance verso handwritten by the artist which reads 'Sketch on mahogany panel, 14 x 12 inches, oil. This background was not the final one used. Two paintings were done, one of HRH driving / (sitting in phaeton) in Windsor Park which is in her possession, the other of her sitting in phaeton in front of Windsor Castle with a young footman holding the ponies head, owned by the Queen Mother. All the many drawings and oil studies were made out of doors, on the spot. The two paintings were executed in the Throne Room which I was allowed to use as a studio. In this sketch of which only a part of the extreme background was used in the finished picture, HRH is seen returning from going down, as she did each day to feed her pony (a white Norwegian pony) - to go to her lessons. The pony 'Hans' and the phaeton were brought out each fine day for me to make studies from. The final painting was c.30 x 25 inches. With HRH are her two Corgi's, 'Crackers' - the second name I forget and a Pekingese called 'Chinky'. The phaeton - which had been 'made over', was given to HRH by King George VI as a birthday present and had previously been given by King Edward VII to Queen Alexandra, on his return, I was told, from a visit to Paris. Painting by Allan Gwynne Jones, frame made by Ronald Thexton and AGG February 1978 (sometimes when her lessons or other reasons prevented her from coming to sit, I would find a few gingerbread biscuits put on my paint box in the small shelter that most considerately had been put up on my 'painting ground' in the park... these spared by Hans where I thought with... kindness given to me as a sort of consolation for a sitting having to be cancelled.

Chips to onyx edges and rims.
