THOMAS HARDY: "The English Woman's Cookery Book" by Isabella Beeton, London 1865, inscribed "Mrs Thomas Hardy Jan. 18.1866" and with a paper label to the cover "Cookery book used by Mrs T. Hardy, Bockhampton". See illustration. This volume has come from a relative of Harry & Joan Lock, solicitor and personal friend of Kate Hardy (Thomas's sister).
*Elizabeth Wright (1928-2015)EGGS IN A SLIPWARE DISH, 1944/5;Verso, an unfinished study of the head of a woman, probably Ivy Compton-Burnett, oil on boardapproximately 54 x 81cmLegendary cookery writer, Elizabeth David, was a good friend of Lett-Haines and a frequent visitor to Benton End, where the hospitality and garden produce were second to none. Bod, a trained cook, often helped Lett in the kitchen. Cedric Morris’s famous painting 'The Eggs', 1944, was created in the kitchen where it hung for years. Elizabeth David acquired it c.1953 and used it on the cover of her final book, 'An Omelette and a Glass of Wine', 1984. It was presented to the Tate on her death in 1992. *Artist's Resale Right may apply to this lot.
