A FINE DERBY COFFEE CUP AND SAUCER, painted by, probably, Thomas 'Jockey' Hill and William Billingsley with landscapes with figures including a scene in Dovedale framed by swags over gilt-seeded lavender 'seaweed', paterae and bows in gilt border, the handle gilt with husks, saucer 14cm diam, Duesbury & Kean, painted crown, crossed batons, D, 320 and numeral 3 of the gilder William Cooper in puce, c1795-97 Illustrated: John, op cit, plt 35B. Literature: A teapot and cover (Derby Museum) of the same pattern is illustrated Barrett and Thorpe, op cit, plt 135. It is likely that only one service of this pattern was made, part of which was exhibited in Derby in 1877, when a trio was sold for 10 gns. Another, also with Cooper's numeral 3 was in the Littlewood-Hill Collection and sold Neales, Nottingham, June 1978; (see Twitchett, op cit, plt 208). A teacup and saucer was in the Anthony Hoyte Collection and sold Neales, Nottingham, 1 May 2003, lot 8. ++In fine condition
AN EARLY NEW HALL TEA AND COFFEE SERVICE, the cups with clip handle, decorated in cobalt and gilt with a ribbon of pearls and scrolling foliage, the service including a sugar box and cover, 14cm h, c1790 (31) ++Wear to the gilding on the sugar box and a star crack in the base, the slop basin riveted. One or two of the other items with slight wear to the gilding on the rims but in generally excellent condition
