His health broke down owing to these exertions, but he nevertheless continued to carry out patrol work of the utmost value until November 23rd, when he was ordered to return to Archangel for duty with General Savvitch. The conduct of this Officer has throughout been of an order demanding the highest courage, determination and energy.’ As an ‘honorary’ award to a foreign national this M.C. was not announced in the London Gazette. An Order of St John group of four awarded to Divisional Superintendent A. G. Ryder, Caterham St John Ambulance Brigade The Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Serving Brother’s breast badge, silver and enamels, the reverse engraved ‘Sopt. A. G. Ryder, Caterham Division S.J.A.B. 24th July 1942’; Defence Medal; Coronation 1937; Service Medal of the Order of St John, silver, straight bar suspension with four additional service bars (16814 D/Supt. A. G. Ryder. Caterham Div. No. 8 Dis. S.J.A.B. 1937) mounted for display, very fine (4) £140-£180 --- Order of St John, Serving Brother, London Gazette 1 January 1943. Alfred George Ryder was born on 27 June 1901, and joined the Caterham Division of the St John Ambulance Division as a Private on 12 December 1922, and was promoted to Corporal in February 1927. At this time Superintendent ‘Riley and his enthusiastic band did not of course possess motor (or even horse) ambulances. When they were notified of an illness or accident, two men would leave the Ambulance Station pushing between them a wheeled litter. This was a strange looking trolley which supported a stretcher covered with something like a pram hood and running on solid wheels. At that time the Caterham and District Hospital was the nearest General Hospital and admitted accident cases. Normally there was no resident physician, but a local G.P. was called in to give whatever treatment was necessary. This means of transport survived until 1928 when the first motor ambulance was obtained. The move was precipitated by an accident where a girl was knocked down and quite seriously injured in War Coppice Road. George Ryder and Mr Smith were called out and ran pushing the litter all the mile and a half - uphill nearly all the way - only to find that when they arrived a passing car had taken the casualty away.’ (A copied typescript history of the Caterham Division, included with the Lot, refers.) George Ryder was promoted to Ambulance Officer in June 1933, and became Divisional Superintendent of the Caterham Division in May 1934. Ryder was in charge of the A.R.P. Ambulance Section during the 1939-45 War. Headquartered at the Ambulance Station at the beginning of the war, he later moved his H.Q. to Waterdene. When the A.R.P. became Civil Defence, Ryder continued to run this after the war until his death. In 1947, the Surrey Ambulance Service was formed and some St John Stations were to become part of the Service, George Ryder being one of them, a position he held until his death in February 1962. Sold with an extensive file of research including several copied photographs.

Dimensions: Image size: 18 1/4 x 22 1/8 in. (464 x 562 mm).Lot Note(s): Edition unknown, presumed very small. Off-white wove paper. Margins. Fine, strong impression. Overall good condition with no serious issues. Minor edge tears, not into the image. The work could be conserved easily. It has not been hinged. Literature/catalogue raisonne: Lissitzky-Kuppers 40. Comment(s): An extremely important print and arguably El Lissitzky's most famous image. Our example compares favorably with the example printed c1926 which sold for $41,400 at Swann Galleries, New York City, April 21, 2005, lot #70. In this propaganda object published during the Russian Civil War, the intrusive red wedge symbolizes the Bolsheviks, who are penetrating and defeating their opponents, the White Movement. Lazar Markovich Lissitzky was a Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer, polemicist, and architect. He was an important figure of the Russian avant garde, helping develop suprematism with his mentor, Kazimir Malevich, and designing numerous exhibition displays and propaganda works for the former Soviet Union. His work greatly influenced the Bauhaus and constructivist movements, and he experimented with production techniques and stylistic devices that would go on to dominate 20th-century graphic design. Miguel Oslé Sáenz de Medrano (Spanish, 1879-1960)A monumental patinated bronze figure of 'The Prisoner'the shackled semi-nude male figure clad in a loin cloth, his left arm behind his head, on square plinth base, the base signed and dated 'MYL OSLE MCMXXXV', 200cm high overall.Footnotes:ProvenanceSotheby's London, 16 November 2006, lot 161By repute formerly part of Miguel Osle's monument commemorating the loss of sixty three members of Barcelona Football Club during the Spanish Civil War between the July 1936 and the April 1939. Although a monument that was possibly planned prior to the war (as the work is dated 1935), it was erected outside the front of the old stadium, 'Les Corts' (opened in 1922 and closed in 1957) but was removed when the building was demolished to make way for its replacement 'Camp Nou'. The monument incorporated two larger than life male nudes, a helmeted soldier and the present figure, a chained prisoner. Many of the players and supporters that the monument came to commemorate fell during the bloody conflict between the Republicans or Loyalists (as Catalonia was a strongly Republican area) and Franco's Nationalists.Affectionately known as Barca and a Catalan institution, FC Barcelona was founded in 1899 and the club motto 'Mes que un club (More than a club)' reflects the pride of Barcelona's citizens. The sculptor Miguel Oslé Sáenz de Medrano was himself a club member which is presumably why he felt so strongly to work on the monument, although he may have utilised a work that had been previously planned in the preceding years before the conflict. Miguel collaborated on a number of monuments with his brother Llucià in Barcelona and another Civil War memorial by Llucià is situated in the Parc de Montjuïc.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: AR TPAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. Deutscher Krieg (Austro-Prussian War) -- Photographer: JohannTheodor Meier. Bahnhof Eger. June 19, 1866. Albumen print with rounded corners. 14 x 30 cm. Mounted to original board (traces of use, strong vertical crease in left side, soiled), with gilt title and date printed below the image on the mount. The location and date "Bahnhof Eger am 19. Juni 1866" is printed in gilt letters below the image on the mount. On this day Prussia declared war against Austria and its federal troops. The direct cause was the mobilization, by the Bundestag in Frankfurt, under the leadership of Austria. The railroad station at Eger was obviously one of the most important railroad junctions for troop transports towards Königgrätz and other war locations. In this image one can see over 30 locomotives and a large number of wagons on 6 or 7 rails ready for departure. The importance of railroads was quickly recognized by Prussia after the American Civil War of 1861/65, where for the first time the crucial role of railroads in the rapid transport of troops had been clearly demonstrated. Such an early German photograph that so keenly demonstrates the importance of the railroad during the war is extremely rare. – Some scuff marks and surface soiling, stronger verticle crease in left side, otherwise in good condition.

Broadside - Towle (Christopher). The present schools as Mr. Towle, teaches in for the year of 1783, as viz. Oxford, Coventry, Northampton, Daventry Woburn, Newport-Pagnell, Wellingborough, Wolston, and Hill..., Newport-Pagnell: Printed for B. Leverett, where every article of letter-press printing is reasonably performed, [1783], single-sheet broadside, ornamental border, slight wear where previously folded, margins trimmed close to border, generally in good condition, folio (35 x 21.2cm)Qty: (1)NOTESESTC T228549. One location only (British Library). This is the earliest recorded piece of printing from Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, and the printer Leverett is otherwise unknown. A lengthy broadside handbill for an 18th century dancing master, asserting the value of dance to all branches of human achievement and offering instruction in virtually all the arts and sciences. Towle, based in Coventry but obviously itinerant, here offers tutoring by the fortnight or quarter. The key to life, in his view, is the ability to dance, "No man can be well prepared in any sort of genteel trades, professions, sicances [i.e. sciences], employments, servitudes, music, the army, or navy, unless they can dance exceedingly well; dancing will make make a man stand and walk, and look, and speak well; to be courteous, and civil, obliging, and complaisant, and genteel, and of a fine forgiving merciful disposition ... I have known and heard of persons who as been good dancers, to advance themselves from a Quirsiter to a Bishop, from a Private Man to a General, from a Cabinboy to a Admiral ... dancing gives a person a easy looking and speaking, to his superiors and inferiors, it takes off those slow and effeminately proud deluding look that some of the sectary make of ... in short dancing is the very greatest support to trades and manufactures of all sorts, and professions of every kind that can be mention'd, and all those sort of persons who has any thing to say against dancing are enemies to the whole community &c." Through Towle's training a boy of twelve can be brought to expertise with the gun and sword in 12 months, "he will prepare a person that must go to sea, to understand the use of the sails upon any sort of vessel, beginning at a scull or oar, up to a first rate man of war"; likewise he professes expertise in 20 musical instruments, and undertakes concerts, balls and assemblies on request. He will give instruction in "all sorts of English, French, Italion [sic], and Flemish, slow and quick dances", but prefers the English forms "The English dances that he teaches, is ten thousand times preferable to all the foreign-dances" and are useful "in the single-stick, quarter-staff, broad-sword, small-sword, wrestling, boxing, running, jumping, swimming, ringing, and horsemanship of all sorts, painting, drawing, stage-players of all sorts, music, surgery, in ev'ry circumstance of fraction and dislocation, &c." Christopher Towle's home establishment was a ladies boarding school in Coventry, where he offered "Needle-work, spelling and reading, at 12.l. 12.s. per year ... music, dancing, writing, French, and drawing, at usual prices to be paid for separately."

* Charles I (1600-1649). King of England, Scotland & Ireland, 1625-49. Document Signed, 'Carolus R', Beverley, [Yorkshire], 19 July [1642], in Latin, a Royal letters patent to Henry Earl of Bath, Edward Viscount Chichester, Edward Seymore and others, appointing Commissioners of Array for Forces in Devon for the defence of the county against the King's enemies, also calling for beacons to be put in place to give warning of danger, a little ink loss affecting lettering of one or two words near the centre of lines 5-14, a few letters rubbed with a little loss of lettering near lower right margin not affecting sense, blank upper margin clipped at centre [to accommodate tag at lower margin when folded], lacks pendant Great Seal, a little yellowing at extremities (probably from previous framing for display), decorative initial 'C' and signature of the King upper left, countersigned Willys lower right, endorsed 'A Commission of Array for the County of Devon, Willys', 27 x 51 cm, accompanied by an old printed transcription and English translation on two card sheets with mounting remains to extremities where presumably displayed with the documentQty: (1)NOTESAlthough long obsolete, commissions of array were revived by King Charles I in 1642 at the start of the Civil War, in an unconstitutional manner, without Parliament having been consulted, in order to counteract the equally unconstitutional Militia Ordinance enacted by Parliament in 1642 without the usual Royal Assent. Both decrees were issued in order to attempt to gain control of existing militia forces and to raise further troops. The Commission of Array issued by the king thus sought to muster a Royalist army at the onset of the English Civil War. Commissioners were appointed for each county, generally from leading members of the local aristocracy and gentry who might be assumed to wield great influence over their feudal tenants and the population in general. The commissioners proceeded to the major population centres and read out in public gatherings the text of their commission. Frequently such innovative royal decrees, uncertain in precedent and purpose, were met with open hostility on the part of the local inhabitants who suspected them as being instruments designed for general suppression of the people. Opponents of the king, whilst playing down the role of the Militia Ordinance in augmenting civil strife, portrayed the Commission of Array as being a sign that it was the king and not Parliament who was the real aggressor in the developing conflict. 28 Commissioners of Array were appointed in Devon.

Constance Markievicz (1868 - 1927) Her personal copy of John Inglesant; A Romance; Inscription on front pastedown - Constance Gore Booth from her mother Feb 4/87 / Better late than never / May 30 - .st. A nineteenth birthday present to Constance Gore-Booth, later Countess Markievicz, a key Easter Rising, revolutionist, suffragette and the first woman elected to the British Parliament. An important presentation copy of a Victorian romance that goes on to resemble the first owners own life. The eponymous hero is an Anglican, despite being educated partly by Jesuits, and remains so, largely on the advice of his Jesuit mentor, despite strong temptations to convert to Roman Catholicism. Even so, he finds himself involved in intrigues between the Roman Catholic Church and the High Church party of the Church of England, and becomes a courtier of Charles I. He fights on the Royalist side in the English Civil War, is wounded at the battle of Edgehill, and fights at Naseby. As a result of his role in negotiations on the King's behalf in Ireland, he is tried and condemned for treason; he only narrowly escapes execution.
