The body is very slender and gracious.Two necklines are visible, the oval face is slightly gazing downwards with downcast eyes, a prominent nose and the lips smiling slightly.The Buddha is wearing a winged crown with five points, enclosing the ushnisha topped by a diamond jewel.Large floral pendants hang from the ears.

The ivory bowl superbly polished, the reverse with a central himotoshi, the cord attachment within.DIAMETER 4.3 cmCondition: Very good condition with minor wear and some rubbing to gilt. A thin crack to the ivory bowl. The present netsuke depicts the giant statue of Buddha at Todai-ji, a Buddhist temple complex in Nara. The statue is the largest bronze seated Buddha in Japan at 15 m high and was completed in 751. The Great Buddha statue has been recast several times for various reasons, including earthquake damage. The current hands of the statue were made in the Momoyama Period, and the head was made in the Edo period. The Great Buddha Hall (Daibutsuden) has been rebuilt twice after fire. The other hand is placed at the shoulder as if in the middle of resting the cheek in it. The torso is bare except for some jewellery. The head is calm with fleshy lips and a large nose, drop-shaped pendants hang from the ears and a tiara presses the wavy long hair to the head. A small noose is attached to the back, the statue is hollow.

His face has a welcoming expression with large eyes, the urna sits between the eyebrows and his curly hair is done up in a high bun. There are two metal nooses at the back of the statue.

His head is surrounded by an aureole with spiked center. The two consorts are wearing long dressed, they are both slightly bending outwards from their hips. They are also backed by mandorlas. The back of the statue is flat with patina.
